Welcome to the Season 79 Ottawa Highlander Team Awards!
With season 80 on the horizon and season 79 in the rear view mirror it's time to take a moment to reflect on the recent season and honor the best of the Ottawa Highlanders, as voted by their teammates. As the captain of the Ottawa Highlanders I'm honoured to present the awards.
Ottawa Claymore - Offensive Player of the Year
The claymore is one of the most recognizable swords in history. A uniquely Scottish two handed sword first appearing at the beginning of the sixteenth Century. A massive offensive season can only be named after on of the largest swords in history. This season's award goes to the driving force behind Ottawa's best offensive season of their short history. A player who led the team in points, tying the franchise record, and dangerous in all aspects of the game. For the second season in a row congratulations to Easton Schaffer!
Tartan Shield - Defensive Player of the Year
As opposed to the Claymore, the Shield is synonymous with defense, keeping safe and parrying your opponent's blows. Moreso, the Shield is synonymous with Scottish heritage as it is the foundation to family crests, the cornerstone of an identity. The Tartan is our colors, what separates us and what makes the Ottawa Highlanders who they are. Defend our identity, defend who we are, on and off the ice. This season's award goes to a rookie who stepped into a young defense corps and led the team in time on ice, GA/TA, and second in blocks and points among defensemen. Congratulations to Jaquavion Tavius!
Cameron Trophy - Best Two-Way Player
The team draws inspiration from the historical Cameron Highlanders, a storied unit in Canadian Armed Forces history. Being a strong unit requires strategy, that both anticipates attacks and can dish them out. Proficiency at both is what made the Cameron Highlanders so potent, and why the Two-Way award is named as is. This season's winner was a leader in all phases of the game, leading the team in goals (including a new Highlander record), and power play goals while chipping in with 3 shorthanded goals. Congratulations to Hockey Player!
Best Rookie Player
This award goes to the Highlander rookie of the year. This year's winner stepped in to a deep forward group to anchor the 3rd line and filled in as needed on the power play and shorthanded, putting up 41 points in the process. His work on the ice was reflected by a near-constant presence in the locker room. Congratulations to Leo Carlsson!
Hockey Player Award for the Most Dedicated Highlander
Named after the Highlander's first ever draft pick, a veteran who bought into the expansion franchise enough to jump in as co-GM, and one of the first faces a new player sees in the league, the Hockey Player Award is given to the player who gives everything they have to see Ottawa succeed, both on the ice and in creating and sustaining the best locker room in the league. In a a season where he wouldn't see much ice time as a rookie, one player dove into the mix and made up for it in the locker room. He surpassed all expectations of an early draft pick, became an ever-constant presence in the locker room, bringing in friends to the league, and ultimately making us question all our food choices. A bright spot in the league as a whole, and I couldn't think of a better person to give this award to. Congratulations to Leo Carlsson!
Cob O'Corn Leadership Award
(Presented by Ottawa GM Frenchie)
Named after one of the franchise's inaugural captains, an eager addition to the expansion, and a beacon of resilience in his final year in the SMJHL, Cob O'Corn was was key in paving the way for the Highlander franchise. How do you define leadership? You can't really, many different players have many different ways of expressing leadership, and you can really only know it when you see it. This is especially true in Spiff's behavior. Not a man of always many words, Spiff knows when the right time to speak is, and is always the first to raise a hand to help out, to keep track of progress and to elevate his teammates. Not the loudest, but damn effective. Now, surely a captain is obviously a good leader? Yeah, perhaps. But being able to rise to the occasion and not crumble under the pressure is a feat of itself that merits applause and praise. Congratulations Spiff!
The Highlander - Team's Choice MVP
There can be only one Highlander winner, which is why we vote for these awards. This year's winner will be no surprise, because he won it last season too. A leader at both ends of the ice, the catalyst for our offensive success, and a key part of the defensive strategy. Congratulations to Easton Schaffer!
Congratulations to all our S79 award winners! Airson glòir! For glory!
