S81 SMJHL PT #1: Season Preview Due: Sunday, February 23rd @ 11:59 PM PST

I think everyone in Detroit knows that this is a building year. We aren’t expecting too much out of the season. But I will say being in a “building state” doesn’t mean nothing is going on! It’s in the name, you’re literally building! So what can we hope to build in this upcoming season?

Well I think it's offensive for one. Before the draft, Detroit only had 5 active forwards. In the 82 draft they add two each at the positions of right wing, left wing, and center. The young bloods from the draft you should watch out for are Jonas Grey, Bingankus Glunksplosion, and Maximus Decimus Meridius. Jonas has already put in work on shooting, with 67 shots, which earns them 6th on the leaderboards across all teams for shots. Glunksplosion and Meridus each only have one penalty, showing great discipline. As the offense settles into a groove with all these rookies, we can rely on our steady defense, where there is more experience in the form of veterans, Vasher Summer and Mathieu Mathematique. Both lead the SMJHL defensemen in Shot Percentage.

Team is looking good for the upcoming season. We might be rolling out the gate dominating, but we have time to figure things out and get ready for the playoffs. Rocky Gislason and Normand Marineau are going to be leaned on by us for scoring. Hoping these two can really carry our offense production. They can be the spark that gets us going in games and leads us to more victories down the stretch of the season. In net, you have both Meowlnir Kittenson and Mrkicksave41. Tiny Princess on defense is going to play a big role leading the d corps and hoping getting that group contributing and setting up the forwards. Management likes the team we have and maybe picking up a few additions down the road will set our team up for the playoffs. Currently, the first week in, we’re middle of the pack but there’s a lot of hockey to be played and we’re all fairly close so we’ll see if the team heats up this season.

The Kraken is looking to forget their lost in the finals last season and are looking to go back there and prove everyone that they deserved to win it! It’s playoffs or nothing for us and we will not accept a simple first round enter. It’s do or die for us and we’ll give everything on the ice. We are also counting on our group of leaders to show the way for us, rookies,  but also for everyone else. Chuck Stewart, Kim Chaewon and Greyson Willis are our leaders this season and they prove that they are true ones not only in the locker room, but also on the ice. Statistically speaking, Chaewon has been our best player for a couple of seasons and we know that they will still be our best one this season. We’re counting out their leadership and their encouragement to push everyone one in this team to their limit!

The Raptors season ahead looks very promising following a solid draft where they picked up two blue chip prospects in Wilhelm Seider and Evil Jordan Humphrey, while also having several major returning players ready to step up and have better seasons. The two main pieces will be star forwards Normand Marineau and Rocky Gislaison, who are respectively playing in their last and second last seasons with the team and will both be attempting to compete for MVP seasons. On defense, Tiny Princess is expected to be in for a big season after a slightly disappointing S80 where he lost out on the #1 defenseman job to Trey Lambert Gill. The extremely highly rated Hamilton prospect is hoping to turn a lot of heads, especially those in the awards committee. That being said, Colorado has a roster full of players who are aiming to impress following a season where they had a losing record, and good things are ahead. (158 words)

While the Citadelles have every intention and belief that they will emerge from the pack as strong contenders in Season 81, they have gotten off to a middling start. A preseason win rate below .500 has been followed by an 11-7-0 record in the first 18 games of the regular season, and the Citadelles are in something of a slump lately, having lost their last 4 straight contests.

A lot of the early struggles in Québec City can be attributed to the need to build new line chemistry in the wake of losing superstar producers Cristoforo Roccamontepiano (46 G, 77 A) and Randolph Thompson-Smythe (42 G, 57 A). However, the most noticeable trend in the Citadelles’ losing streak has been a lack of team defense, despite retaining most of their S80 defensive core and getting strong on-ice numbers from the rookie Lodewyk-Barista pairing.

Some big players to watch as the Citadelles try to find a groove are:

1. Rodwin Dionicio. Any observers of the league know what the new QCC captain is capable of; he was second in average icetime on his team last season, put up great numbers, and ran QCC’s powerplay from the back end. The Citadelles will need him to step up in a big way, as early returns on the newly formed Hestnes-Dionicio pair are in question.

2. Shiny Rainbow. Returning to the 1C position with a vengeance, Shiny Rainbow already leads QCC in both points and goals. On the other side of the ice, Shiny’s line has been struggling to keep the puck out of their own net, which will have to change for QCC to reach the standard it set last season.

3. Ela Solberg. If one needed confirmation that goaltending is NOT the source of QCC’s occasional woes, look no further. A .914 save percentage is almost overshadowed by Solberg’s league-leading 11 wins and 8.55 GSAA (!!!). Solberg has looked nothing short of MVP material through 18 games, but the rest of the team will have to lighten the load on their netminder if they hope to find sustained success this season.

This year for St. Louis will be one where there will be plenty of learning to be done on the fly. This team right now is mainly made up of fresh rookies, and that is honestly a fun thing to think about. We'll likely be vibing with each other, learning, developing, the whole fun shebang. It'll be a very fun time, and given a season or two, I think the rest of the league will be put on notice.

As for the players I would list out, it would be Toivo Jokinen, Swiffer Sweeper and the goalie tandem of Wal Rus and Teemu Jarvinen. All are S82 guys, but I would also be very concerned with the fact that they are all developing tight and well. If I could include myself in this, what you would be getting with us five is a tandem that will shut down shot attempts and a line with a potent blend of playmaking and speed. These guys I mentioned will be wagons and a huge pick up for whoever drafts them in the S82 SHL draft.
