Did you ever hear the triumph of the S70 New England Wolfpack?
I thought not. Well then, gather round children, while I tell you about the most clutch team of ALL time. Our story begins at the end of the regular season: season 70. The New England Wolfpack had had a decent season, but not a great one. They finished their campaign with 88 points well behind Atlanta, Montreal, Seattle, Winnipeg (more like loseipeg amirite), and Philly who had a whopping 57 wins and 115 points making them the HEAVY favorite to lift the cup at the end of the playoffs. But things do not always go according to plan, and the New England Wolfpack would show that to be the case right from the opening series: Round One New England Wolfpack 4 vs 5 Buffalo Stampede In Round one the Wolfpack faced off against the 5th seed in the East, the Buffalo Stampede. They finished the season with 79 points and made for a formidable opponent for the Pack. New England put the offense on display in game 1 taking a 3-0 lead in the first period (started off with a goal from Cup Noodle [hey i know that guy!]) that left the final score never really in doubt. Buffalo fought back with a tightly contested 3-2 victory to win game 2 and knot the series at 1 apiece. Another back and forth in games 3 and 4 and 5 and 6 (with game 6 being a particularly tight contest with the stampede scoring an OT winner that kept their season alive), led to New England's first game 7 of the postseason. If you thought it was going to be a nervewracking contest (as most game 7's are), you'd be sorely mistaken. The Wolf pack jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, a 7-0 lead in the 2nd, before finishing the game 9-0 in what has to be the largest game 7 blowout in history (although i don't have the time to check on that). NEW ENGLAND WOLFPACK 4-3 Buffalo Stampede Round TWO New England 4 vs 2 Montreal Patriotes The Patriotes finished the regular season with 95 points and the 2nd seed in the Eastern Conference. In Round 1 they dispatched of the Hamilton Steelhawks in 6 games and probably expected to brush the Wolfpack aside with similar ease. Games 1 and 2 followed the formula of the first round with New England winning game 1 and losing game 2 5-2. But 2 Overtime wins in games 3 and 4 (both with GWGs by Paul Koivu) put New England on the precipice of advancing to the conference finals. Montreal had other ideas though as they grabbed a 7-4 win in game 5 and a tight 3-2 win in game 6 to force the Wolfpack to again go the distance if they wanted to advance. Heading into game 7 the Patriotes had all the momentum, as well as home ice, and had to feel good about their chances. They even overturned a 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 lead late in the 3rd, but a tying goal by Petr Svoboda on the Powerplay and a game winning/series clinching goal by Edward Elric with only 48 seconds left in regulation, propelled the Pack to the conference finals in an upset of the higher seeded Pats. NEW ENGLAND WOLFPACK 4-3 Montreal Patriotes (As this is already well over 600 words, I will be ending this deep dive here, and continue with a part 2 so I can turn it in for media money. You can read part 2 here) ![]() ![]() ![]() Head Office Resurgens |
