INTERVIEW – Ebbe Björner: “You don’t always get a second chance. But when you do – you better be ready.”
By: Jessica Raynor

The last time we met Ebbe Björner, he was on his way back. After not being drafted in S82, he openly admitted that he had hit rock bottom, but he hadn't given up. Now, a few weeks later, he's about to start his journey over again – this time with Yukon Malamutes, the team he faced in his very first start in the SMJHL.

Ebbe, it’s quite symbolic that you’re now with Yukon Malamutes. It was them you faced in your debut last season. How does it feel?
– It's pretty surreal, to be honest. The last time I played against Yukon, it felt like a dream shattered. We lost 3-1, but I still had a decent game. I stopped 31 shots, had a save percentage of 91%, but it wasn’t enough for us to win. That game is something I'll always remember, and now that I'm here, with Yukon, it feels like I’ve been given a second chance to prove I'm better than I was back then.

How does it feel to get a second chance with a new team?
– It feels amazing, but it’s not just a chance to play hockey again. It’s a chance to prove that I’ve truly changed, both as a player and as a person. I’ve worked so hard to get to where I am today, and I’m not going to take this for granted. It’s not just about playing games – it’s about giving everything I have to show that I’ve learned from my mistakes.

What does it mean to you to be part of Yukon Malamutes, and what have the coaches meant to you so far?
– I’m so thankful to have gotten this opportunity. Coach Fluw has been amazing, and the whole Yukon organization has shown me so much support. It means a lot to me. When I started in the SMJHL last season, it was a really tough time for me, but having people like Fluw who believe in me makes all the difference. I really want to thank him and the entire organization for giving me this chance.

Now you have the opportunity to start over, but not long ago you were thinking of giving up. How has your mindset changed?
– I’d be lying if I said it’s been easy. There have been dark times. I wasn’t feeling well, and I was wondering if I should quit. But now when I look back, I’m glad I kept pushing forward. I’ve learned that when you’re close to giving up, that’s when you have the biggest opportunity to change. I’m not the same player I was last year – I’ve become stronger mentally and physically.

So, what’s your goal for this season with Yukon Malamutes?
– My goal is to win, of course. I want to give everything I’ve got, every game. But more than that, I really want to prove to myself – and to those who’ve believed in me – that I’m a new version of myself. The old Ebbe? He’s not here anymore.

And what about the draft next season? Is it on your mind?
– Yeah, of course. I’d be lying if I said I’m not thinking about it. I still have a lot to prove, and if a chance to be drafted to the SHL comes, then I’ll be ready. I know it will take a lot, but I’ve always dreamed of playing there, and if that chance comes again, I’ll give everything I’ve got to seize it.

And what about Baltimore? Is there any future there?
(Ebbe smiles and nods.)
– Baltimore… That’s where my heart is. I grew up watching Sir Devoir in goal for the team. He was my idol. I dream of playing there, being part of that culture. But it’s not just about the team – it’s about proving to everyone that I’m not the same person I was last year.

What would you like to say to those who have supported you along the way?
– I want to give the biggest thanks to O1Playz for everything he’s done for me. His support has been invaluable, and he’s really helped me get back on track. I also want to thank Rojjter, who’s always been there pushing me not to give up. And of course, Coach Fluw and the entire Yukon organization – I’m so grateful for the chance you’ve given me. I won’t take this for granted.

And now, Ebbe, what’s your biggest goal for this season?
– I want to win the Four Star Cup with Yukon. I want to help the team go all the way, and if we do, I’ll buy a Yukon jersey in real life to celebrate. That’s my biggest motivation right now.
(If Yukon wins the Four Star Cup, I’ll buy a Yukon jersey in real life.)

Final words from Ebbe:
– It doesn’t matter that I wasn’t drafted last year. I’m not here to prove anything to anyone but myself. I’m going to show what I’m made of – and I’m just getting started on my journey.

Jessica Raynor: Ebbe, it’s going to be exciting to follow your journey. Thanks for sharing.
Ebbe Björner: Thank you. I’ll show that I’m ready.

Unfortunately for Baltimore, I doubt there will be a spot open for the next 12 seasons with Evil Kyle Murray entering his prime and Gibson coming up after this.
