Deep Dive #1: Detroit - Maine seasonal SMJHL rivalry
#1

Detroit Falcons and Maine Timber - a seasonal rivalry of two very similar teams in terms of mutual results

This season's schedule has put these two teams in 6 matches against each other. An even record between two teams is not an unusual thing but in this case two matches resulted in a shootout. And they are even in this category as well.
Let's take a look at list of the match result first to get you in the picture and I will talk about them more later.

1st game: Maine / Detroit - 2:6
2nd game: Maine / Detroit - 2:3 (SO)
3rd game: Detroit / Maine - 2:3
4th game: Detroit / Maine - 0:3
5th game: Maine / Detroit - 1:4
6th game: Detroit / Maine - 5:6 (SO)

You can see from the game results that the home ice advantage played the biggest role - each match won has been on home ice.
The game that is worth mentioning the most was the last game.

46 SOG each, 50% FO% each, 12 PIM each, 41 hits Falcons, 40 hits Timber, total quality of shots 67 Falcons, 70 Timber. You can see from the stats how the game must have looked like. A drama until the very end. Unfortunately there is no way to check the shootout statistics because I bet they ended somewhere in the 20th round minimum Smile

In the standings Maine ended up 6th overall and 3rd in the conference with 80 points while Detroit ended 10th overall and 5th in the conference with 67 points. Interestingly the goal differential for Maine is +9 and +21 for Detroit.

Let's compare the players of both teams.

Maine has: 5 players playing their 4th season, 4 players playing 3rd season, 5 players playing 2nd season, and 3 rookies
Detroit has: 2 players playing their 4th season, 4 players playing 3rd season*, 5 players playing 2nd season, and 7 rookies*

* there has been a change during the season because of Mathieu Mathematique's inactivity (during his 3rd season) so he's been replaced for rookie Gary

I have to say that with such a young team Detroit played really well agaisnt the veteran majority of Maine in the mutual matches.

It's 2nd season for both goalies of Maine and together they made a very decent tandem. They both played 36 games and their numbers are very similar with George Dankse having a slight edge over Travis Coates. Both of their SV% is above 0.9 which is fantastic, however George Dankse has managed 4 shutouts.
It wasn't the best year for John Gibson from Detroit though. He had to play majority of the games (49) because it's 1st season for his backup Theo Dahl. His SV% is 0.871. He still managed to earn 3 shutouts though.

Pointwise best player of Maine was Lucas Lindberg with 76 points and Detroit's Quazon Brosonchi with 83 points.

It would be great to see these 2 teams compete in the playoffs however they'd have to pass through the 1st round (and probably in the 2nd too if I understand the playoff brackets correctly)
So let's hope we can see them compete again because they may put up the best show for the fans.
