Martucci announcing he will be in his final season a week ago

With Roberto Martucci playing his final SHL season, he has a couple of milestones he is looking to reach. There is no doubt that Martucci is seeking his second Challenge Cup ring and retire as a champion. However, that is everybody’s goal in the SHL, to win it all. Martucci has some personal milestones he would like to eclipse as well. These milestones are 200 career goals, 250 career assists and 450 career points. These three milestones are all attainable this season. Martucci would need a 9 goal, 24 point season to reach all three of those plateaus. He was unaware of this until about a week ago.

“I actually had no idea I had that many points and was that close to those achievements. I was actually just having a relaxing day at home when I felt my phone vibrate. I had gotten a text from Reggie (Minnesota Chiefs forward Reggie Williams). We started texting back and forth and he told me that I was close to eclipsing these totals. Reggie and I have been friends for some time now so I wasn’t too surprised I got a message from him, I was just surprised at the content. I look forward to the challenge” – Roberto Martucci

With fresh blood coming into the SHL and the competition level rising, it won’t be an easy task for Martucci. He is entering his 10th SHL season and he knows it won’t be easy. Not to mention he will be losing a great teammate in Brodie Witzel and if David Winter decides not to return to Hamilton, Martucci will be one of the few veterans on this Hamilton team who will have to lead the charge.

“With all these younger players entering the SHL and playing the best hockey of their careers, it’s not easy for me. I have passed my prime and everyone knows I’m older. I still have the drive and the compete level, but my skill set might be a little less than a lot of the people in this league. I also won’t have Witzel by my side to help me out, but guys like McKeil will be a huge help to me up front. I really hope I can put something together and reach these totals.” – Roberto Martucci

Martucci will not have the veterans of last season, but the younger blood of the Hamilton core will be there to support the team and drive them forward. Hamilton will be sad to know that this will be Martucci’s final season lacing them up for the Steelhawks, but he hopes to leave a lasting impression on the fans.

“It would be a great achievement to end my career and then hopefully go on to help Hamilton win its second Challenge Cup. The fans in Hamilton are great and it would only be a way for me to repay them for all their support throughout the years. They’ve stuck with me since I was drafted and brought up through the ranks and I just hope I can make them happy in my final season here in Hamilton.” – Roberto Martucci
