<div align="justify">Game 15: Firebirds - Knights

The Knights came into tonight's game at Prospera Place having gone 0–3 since winning their season opener against Detroit, and were looking to break that unenviable streak against a reformed Firebirds side who picked up their first win of the campaign last night against the Montreal Impact. Both sides had averaged three goals per game over the first four rounds, though the Knights had netted one more time (13) than their opponents (12).

First Period
It was the visitors who got off to the better start, with Thong Bonerstrom circling the net and unleashing a shot that was too hot for Igor Ogorodnikov to handle, but the goalie smothered it at the second attempt as Rick Chleb closed in on the rebound.

The host's first shot on net came a minute later, and it brought with it the first goal of the game. Reginald Howard picked the puck off in the neutral zone, and Matt Veenstra gained the zone before finding rookie Nikolaus Scholz in front of the net, and the German beat Kyle Cobb between the legs to score his first goal as a Kelowna Knight.

A minute later—with Jonathan Lundberg in the box for tripping—Adam Abodobe had a chance to stretch the twine on a short-handed attempt, but found Cobb equal to the task. The Firebirds' net minder had to be at his best again midway through the period; Reginald Howard slapped one from the point, and Scholz again found a good position in front of the net. The rookie got a stick on the shot, but Cobb showed lightning quick reflexes to adapt to the redirected shot, and keep the score at one.

The hosts took another penalty with Dominic Weber going to the box, and Prince George almost made them pay. Ogorodnikov managed to keep out a hard shot from Patrick Brumm, and as Shea Robinson looked to follow it up, the goaltender got his glove on the puck, and play was stopped amidst a goal mouth scramble.

The visitors gave it their all on the power play, but the home side were doing whatever it took to keep them out; Howard, Abodobe, and Ivar Ogorodnikov all put their bodies on the line to block three consecutive shots on a desperate sequence, and the Knights managed to preserve their lead until three minutes before the break.

Berkis and Robinson dropped the gloves, and the Firebirds' defenceman was ejected from the game for starting the fight. Down a man, Prince George won a face-off in Kelowna territory, and from the resulting play Rick Chleb netted a short-handed goal to tie the scores.

2nd period
The Knights had dominated the face-off circle in the first period, winning fifteen of twenty-two draws, and the trend continued into the second period. Two minutes in, Kristján Vilhjalmsson beat Travis Kudleychuk, and on the ensuing play it was the Icelander who found Dr. Timeturner Whooves at the backdoor, and the Doctor restored the hosts' lead with aplomb.

A quieter period than the first, the second saw just ten shots across twenty minutes, but both goalies had to be at their best to keep the score down. Igor Ogorodnikov kept out Mirko Antonio Scuderi with a glove save that he made look far easier than it was, and at the other end Kyle Cobb pulled off a heroic save to deny Adam Abodobe.

The hosts began to turn the heat up towards the end of the period, and Cobb was again called into action to deny Vilhjalmsson and Palffy from doubling Kelowna's lead. The pressure told before the buzzer, however, and it was the Swede, Abodobe, who claimed his side's third of the night, and his third of the season. Johnson won the draw against Fleming, and the Knights' winger lasered one over Cobb's right shoulder for 3–1.

3rd Period
The Firebirds had to do something in the third, and they got off to a positive start, with Patrick Brumm twice calling Ogorodnikov into action inside the first two minutes. Bonerstrom was next to test the Knights goaltender, but he couldn't find a way past the Russian's glove.

At the other end, Cobb had to be alert to keep Randy Randleman at bay; the Knights' captain had one shot blocked by the goalie, and a follow-up blocked by Patrick Brumm; the defender's goal-saving lunge gave Cobb enough time to recover, and cover the puck as Whooves bore down on goal, looking for her second of the night.

As the period wore on the game became scrappier, with Kelowna pair Vilhjalmsson and Johnson picking up penalties for roughing and hooking respectively. The second of these penalties gave the Firebirds a way back into the game, as defence man Patrick Brumm unloaded a rocket that beat Ogorodnikov glove side.

The visitors couldn't capitalise on the goal, however, and spent much of the remaining five minutes on the defensive. Goaltender Kyle Cobb gave up a penalty for a slash on Whooves, and that penalty killed any hope of taking momentum from Brumm's goal. Sum Ting Wong had the final chance of the game as Prince George played with six skaters, but he couldn't beat Igor Ogorodnikov, and the Knights hung on to take a deserved 3–2 victory.

<div align="justify">Game 16: Firebirds - Scarecrows

Following last night's loss to the Kelowna Knights, the Firebirds were looking to pick up their second win of the campaign, but the task ahead of them was a daunting one. On the road, they faced a Scarecrows side boasting a 100% record over the first five regular season games, and who had already beaten them once this season.

1st Period
Prince George could scarcely have gotten off to a worse start in St. Louis. From the opening face-off the puck came to Pal Vikingstod; he shrugged off a challenge from Mario Nyquist and fed the puck to Damien Wert, and the Scarecrows' winger did the rest. Coming in off the left flank, he hit a rising shot that beat Cobb high on his glove side, and after just eight seconds the home side had snatched the lead.

The Scarecrows continued to pile on early pressure with shots from Windsor and Mountain, before Shea Robinson recorded the visitors first attempt on target. A penalty to Mitchell Dambach gave the Firebirds an early chance to tie the score, but they couldn’t take advantage of the powerplay, and Dambach and Windsor soon had Cobb earning his worth again in the Prince George net.

The opening ten minutes of the game were a wild affair, full of shots and goalmouth scrambles, with both goaltenders giving up hot rebounds. It took until the thirteenth minute before we saw another goal, however; Firebirds defenceman Jacques Ford hit the massive frame of Mountain with a shot, and Ryan slapped the rebounding puck into the top corner of the net for the game-tying goal.

The Firebirds took great momentum from the goal, and twenty seconds after Ryan’s goal they were bombarding Kozar’s net again, as Fleming drew a save from the Scarecrows goaltender. Kudleychuk and Stanley also tested the Russian before Patrick Brumm split the home defence with a pass, and Thong Bonerstrom skated onto it to slot the puck through Kozar’s pads for 2–1, just forty-four seconds after the tying goal.

The lead didn’t last long, however. After a frantic ten minutes without any scoring, the goals were now flooding in. William Hendrickson won a face-off in the Firebirds zone, and Wick snapped off a shot that beat Kozar high over his glove side shoulder. The visitors’ lead lasted just twelve seconds, and just twenty-two seconds later, they were behind.

Leier beat Wong in the face-off circle, The Carl Mountain teed up Winston Windsor, and his veiled shot-come-pass was tucked in at the back post by McLaren Nasher. After four goals in an insane minute and eighty seconds, the scoring for the first period was done.

2nd Period
After the frantic opening period, the second was, by comparison, more subdued. Both sides still had their chances, however, but neither goalie wanted to give up another goal. Both Cobb and Kozar were tested, and the Firebirds’ netminder had his post to thank after a shot from John Matthews flew past his glove, only to career off the post. A goalmouth scramble ensured, and both Vikingstod and Federov had chances to tuck the puck away before Cobb finally managed to cover up for the face-off.

Midway through the period, Prince George found themselves enjoying a brief spell of dominance, as both Bonerstrom and Scuderi drew saves from Kozar. It was exactly the kind of pressure they needed to bring to bear on the St. Louis goal, but before they could turn the screw, Scuderi was called for a hold, and the Firebirds’ momentum evaporated. To make matters worse, just thirty seconds into the powerplay Pal Vikingstod carried the puck into the Prince George zone and unleashed a thunderbolt that beat Cobb glove side, extending the home side’s advantage to two.

Both sides took penalties during the remainder of the period, but the wind had been taken out of the Firebirds’ sails; only St. Louis seemed like scoring again, and Kyle Cobb had to make a couple of fine saves to keep the deficit to two.

Third Period
Prince George came out fighting after the break, but—despite an early powerplay for a penalty against The Carl Mountain—they couldn’t test Kozar, let alone beat him. The penalty expired, and the Scarecrows took complete control. Cobb faced a total of eleven shots in the period, but by the time John Matthews latched onto Winston Windsor’s pass and slapped the puck beyond Kyle Cobb for 5–2 (12:13), the visitor’s had yet to register a shot on target since the restart.

After the goal the Firebirds finally managed to find some momentum. and they hit the target with six shots in the final eight minutes, but could not find a way past Kozar. There were still plenty of chances at the other end, though, and the end of the period became something of a battle of goaltenders, with the victor already pre-decided. The home side’s fourth goal seemed to deflate the Firebirds, and from that point on there was only ever one winner in this game. St. Louis march on, and maintain their 100% record. For Prince George, the good news is that the season is young, and they have much time to improve.

Final Score
Firebirds 2–5 Scarecrows
Shots: 23–37
