Why you should not only play for but visit Halifax A list of 25 things to do
#1

(1,300 words)

Hey there everyone, I learned that another member will be visiting my area in coming days and I decided to do up a list of 25 things I would want someone visiting to experience before leaving. I will have left things off the list that either didn't cross my mind or is a bit harder to get to from the downtown area. Also, I haven't listed it because it should go without saying if you visit, you get a donair.

If you don't know what that is, I pity you, I pity you for every hangover you may have ever had because it is the best thing ever the morning after and probably shaves a few years off your life but you didn't care last night, so why should you now. Anyway, let's get this started.

1) Citadel Hill (Fort George)
Go here, inside and out, look at all of Halifax and surrounding area, does reenactments of 18th century fort life featuring the 78th Highlanders, also the regiment has fired the cannon at 12 noon every single day I have been in this city and a good long time before that.

2) Peggys Cove
The most iconic lighthouse and the most gorgeous views we have available I think, bring a camera and lots of film.

3) Waterfront
Just go experience it, it is so amazing on a hot summer day. Sugahs has hand paddled ice cream and mix ins, it is my favorite thing to do is get a waffle cone with a scoop of old fashioned vanilla, mind chocolate chip, maple syrup and peanut butter chocolate chip cookie dough. There is simply too much to list here, restaurants, stands, The Wave, Maritime Museum, Historic Properties Playground, Beach Volleyball Court, plenty of seats to watch the harbour, the list goes on and on but one thing is for certain, there is nothing like a waterfront in the summertime and East Coasters do it best.

4) Chives
Renowned Chef Craig Flynn owns this, go here

A personal favorite, it is located on Albro Lake Road, it is a cannon that was blown from the point of the Halifax Explosion (the largest non nuclear man made explosion in history)

Shoutout to New Englanders, thanks again for being total homies <3

I will let you read the infographic on how much it weighs and how far it is away from the Harbour . No spoilers

8) The Dingle Tower

A beautiful tower to commemorate a strong piece of Canadian History.

11) Alexander Keiths Brewery
One of the most well known Nova Scotians, this is his brewery with reenactments of it during the early 19th century. Has a bar, The Red Stag, in the complex, which is as true as possible to the time, that serves his brew. The beer battered fish and chips are to die for.

14) Lake Banook
Has a rowing club, lots of areas for swimming and walking trails surrounding it. Starr skates first manufactured in 1864, first used on lake Banook became a popular choice for elite players being worn by 6 of 7 of the 1902 Champion Montreal Hockey Club and our claim as the birthplace of hockey.

15) Alderney Gate And Sullivans Pond
There is a theater, a farmers market on Saturdays, has a park next to it with a brand new playground, a library, a restaurant named the Wooden Monkey which is very vegan friendly.Take the ferry from Halifax and back, S2.50 and ask for a transfer, it will let you on any bus or back across on the ferry for the next 90 minutes.

Just a short walk away
A very nice little park surronding a pond and a beautiful seated and covered white gazebo is a perfect backdrop for pictures

16) The Public Gardens and Spring Garden Road
And this one is probably the best for pictures, wedding pictures, prom pictures, you name it this place has a gorgeous backdrop every way you turn. With local flora and fauna, a Victorian style house keep in mint condition, a music area with seating and plenty of benches and areas to sit, you can get in a good read or perhaps a game of checkers or chess with the built tables. Also if home to the only North American Monument to the Croatian War. And Spring Garden Road, with more to do then you have time for, check out the new library in all it's glory and the old in all it's glory as well.

18) The Garrison Brewing Company
Local micro-brewery with some finely crafted beer. Sugar Moon Maple if in stock is a personal favorite.

19) Propeller Brewing Company
And I feel it's counterpart, they have amazing bitter beers, both offer "Growlers" a two litre jug (19$ for the first fillup) you keep the jug, S10 each other time to fill. Fits great in a hotel fridge for a weekend as neither have preservatives, it will only last that long.

21) Nenas Breakfast House

22) Two if by Sea
Has two locations, one in Dartmouth, from Alderney Gate walk out front, turn left to Octherloney Street and walk up. The other is in historic properties. Can't miss it.

24) Flipburger
Gourmet Hamburgers and home of a personal favorite the Peanut Butter Banana Bacon Milkshake. Yes, it is as delicious as it sounds. And a lot more then that, that thick strip of salty bacon at the bottom when you are done is covered in sweet banana and vanilla ice cream. Yeah, that good.

25) Pier 21
I left this to last on the list for a reason, the first on this list is what we are most known for and this one is what made us who we are. Seeing thousands of immigrants enter Nova Scotia and Canada, from all walks of life and countries, this became the gate to Canada for over a hundred years. If you visit Halifax and you don't go here, you missed out on what shaped our culture plus a phenomenal farmers market as well.
