S32 FIGHT NIGHT: WEEK 1</div>

Welcome, folks, to the first in a series of articles focusing on the bloodbath portion of the SHL: fighting. There are some great stories to be told in these epic battles. and as the season starts, rivalries are forming between scrappers. This is sure to bring a lot of action to the league, so let's hop right in with the first game:

<div align="center">Game 4: :admirals: @ Panthers </div>
The first game for both of these teams turned out to be a complete disaster for the rebuilding Admirals, as they were getting swamped. Goalie Tyler No Nerves also had no reflexes, and by this point, the game was a ridiculous 5-point lead for Sunshine and the gang. Nothing could stop this train, and coaches for the Admirals were throwing clipboards left and right. Something had to be done.

Suddenly, there's a point where Ryan King starts becoming the show-off, making marionette gestures at the Portland bench after being awarded the secondary assist on a powerplay goal, his second assist of the night. King is playing like a true gloater, and has the nerve to shove his center out of the way on an offensive faceoff. Somehow, he wins, and that's when it happened. "Rivet, go get him."

As soon as he left the bench, King saw the burly defender headed his way and there was a fight about to happen in front of the net. Rivet pushed aside King and immediately dropped his gloves, knowing the refs were circling. King nodded, and both grabbed on to each other, ready to tangle. King thought he could work some magic with the right hand, but Rivet was standing tough with him.

<div align="center">[Image: 5aQ3EnSDq3m00.gif]</div>

Unfortunately, neither is really a strong fighter, with King thinking he's the king and Rivet just doing his part in the machine. The refs would come in and break up the fight pretty quickly, as it became apparent there was little being done by either side. As both benches were cheering and hollering, King made another pass at Rivet, screaming through the glass, "It's not over, punk. My team's got the lead. What do you got?"

King would end up being right, with his team scoring yet another goal while both players were rotting away in the box. Rivet came out looking a bit down, but his coach came over and said what any good role model should. "You did the right thing, son, keep at it."
RESULT: Draw

<div align="center">Game 10: Chiefs @ Stars </div>
The North Stars came into this match winners on the road against a weak Steelhawks team, and now playing at home, it was the top line's job to go against the bad boys of the East: Minnesota. The team with the rep for overplaying their players on top lines were whacked by the expansion Stampede at their home opener, and that didn't sit well with one Chernika Banananov.

"Let's win this thing, and dominate!" Chernika said before the team skated out. "I want you to look into the eyes of every player on that North Stars team and tell yourself you can beat them. Have that swagger that brought us to the playoffs last season. I know I'm bringing it." Silence resounded as the team pondered this threat, and made their way to the ice.

Banananov would follow up on that promise and beat the North Stars with excellent puck movement, something not known from the star sniper. The one thing, however, that was pinching every nerve in that Russian body were the hits. Banananov was getting creamed out there, while Chester Cunningham, the hot hand for Toronto, was barely touched but twice the whole game. Banananov skated to the center circle for a faceoff against Chester, and warned him, "Stay away from me, if you don't want to get hurt."

Cunningham quickly won the draw and skated away without so much as a snarky response. It's on, it's on, it's ON kept being repeated by Chernika's inner monologue. I've got him next time we're on the ice. Sure enough, there they were, on the ice, ready to go. Banananov skated to the North Stars corner to meet Cunningham and gave him a tug. "You ready, pretty boy?" she threatened, keeping a grip on the jersey. "Sure thing," said Cunningham, looking at the rest of his team, negative and looking for something to maybe give this 4-2 loss meaning.

<div align="center">[Image: WbUEuAVPWvVzq.gif]</div>

The two grappled on the boards for a while, neither really having the upper hand, until Chernika and Chester caught wind of their rights and de-helmeted each other with the same hook shot. Cunningham took to the hit harder than Banananov, giving the upper hand for the finisher.

<div align="center">[Image: v5hoS26ic46RO.gif]</div>

And with that, the Chiefs road warrior stance was cemented. As Chernika was followed by a bloodied Cunningham, boos rained from the stands, making it impossible to hear anything the refs were saying about the two minors. Banananov had made a target on the back of the jersey, and was selected for one more check before the end of the game. It didn't matter. The Chiefs cemented their first win and ruined the North Stars homecoming the same way the Chiefs were beat at home just a night ago. Even with Dusty Cox getting the 3rd star, everyone in Toronto knew who the feared forward was: Chernika Banananov.
RESULT: Banananov wins by Takedown

<div align="center">Game 13: Steelhawks @ Jets </div>
It's weird to find a game that ends in a shootout where the shootout is not the most exciting part of the bout. All the action happened early, just like the timing of this matchup between interconference foes. Another note to the story, for our purposes: Danny Foster, the first Enforcer to truly make in in the SHL, has yet to find a sparring partner, racking up PIMs but with a lot of Roughing minors and no one taking the bait.

Luckily, there was someone in Winnipeg that wanted to start something, and that man was Andriss Bukss. Tired of being overlooked, tired of playing 3rd pairing minutes, and tired of being irrelevant, Andriss was looking to become something his coaches found as useful. Bukss was needing a role to fill, and with the Jets not having a true enforcer, tonight was his night to take that role.

This chance came early, with Bukss seeing Foster get on the ice as soon as Bukss had possession of the puck. Unfortunately, he was star-gazing and passed the puck right to Brennan Kennedy. Rather than let him score, he came to Foster and started the duel. This was a dream come true for Foster, a neglected fighter that now had his chance to stand on his own as the motivator of his young Steelhawks. Each surveyed the other, trying to find a weakness in their new opponent.

<div align="center">[Image: 19Oq0kVU7x41a.gif]</div>

Finally, the two would clash together, and the arms would flail. Bukss was taking a rather strong hold on Foster's left hand, not allowing any quick body shots. The refs really let this play out, and with it, the fighters got into better position. Foster found his stance and landed a right uppercut to Bukss's jaw. Unaware, however, was Foster to Bukss's left hook to the rib cage, leaving the grip and going full offense, something he never gets to do on ice.

Both regrappled, trying to find a way to take the other down. Foster kept at the slap game, trying to agitate Bukss with quick slaps from his occupied left hand to the face, and back to gripping Andris's shoulder. "I can do this all day," gloated Foster, and Bukss realized he was getting played. He was in a no-win scenario: the Jets needed him on the 3rd pair, Foster was looking for a rise to boost his team. Foster had won without winning.

<div align="center">[Image: QfSmdDH1tB9kY.gif]</div>

"I'm done," Bukss said, turning away and patting a formidable foe on the back, headed to the sin bin. "I got mine too," he added, nodding to his coach, who was tapping one of the spare sticks to the bench boards in approval of his fight.
RESULT: Draw

But wait, there's more!!! Bukss and Foster do get out of the penalty box, and it's Bukss who continues the rough stuff. It's more out of frustration at this point, with his play really emphasizing his goon role. Toward the middle of the 1st, it was the Bukss Turnover show, with recent addition Pal Vikingstod taking away a few of those opportunities. Both teams could be seen shoving each other and trying to really get the puck, and it was one interception after another.

The friction from not being able to do anything on the ice was getting to everyone, and as Bukss gave up yet another puck, he snapped. Streaking to Vikingstod, Bukss tapped a few people into each other and grabbed Vikingstod by the shoulders. Every other player on the ie knew to grab someone and get to work, not wanting to be the single player not involved in a fight. Andris kept shaking Vikingstod, "You can't not fight, bud, the whole stadium is watching now!"

Pal didn't really want to fight, but did he have a choice? He was the new kid in Hamilton, and the coach gave him a sort of look that implied he better fight or risk being benched. "Fine," he mumbled, grappling the shoulder pads and settling into his post.

<div align="center">[Image: VoOygmrFGAanC.gif]</div>

The two would circle, kind of like the rest of the 8 players on the ice, just really switching which arm kept the other away from fighting. "You really don't want this, do you?" Bukss asked, seeing that Vikingstod wasn't ready for it. "Not really," Pal confirmed, throwing a few lack-luster punches. "I think 10 PIMs is all I really want tonight," Andris laughed, thinking this was one of the only ways he'd double digit a stat in one game. "Let's just go serve our time."

<div align="center">[Image: jg31Twux2sMeY.gif]</div>

As the two meandered to their respective boxes to put on their gear, there wasn't much that changed from their viewpoint. Like their fight, the game itself ended in what was supposed to be a dramatic finish but ended up being a one goal shootout, a goalie duel. After the game, Bukss found himself in the coach's office talking new fighting strategy. Pal, meanwhile, was shooting Foster a look of a weird mix between admiration and salt. He's the true fighter, not me, so why did my fight have to be the big one and not his, he thought. Either way, hopefully the roles switch for the next bout.

Side point: never knew that Chris Thorburn and Cody McLeod have such a fighting bromance. Was trying to find Jets fights and almost all of them are Thorburn and someone, and every Colorado game was against McLeod. Cool and creepy at the same time.
