Think of it like this. Everyone votes for their favorite team, the #1 choice gets 30 votes, then #2 gets 6, #3 gets 2, etc... What happens is that the #1 choice takes all the votes from the other choices, so it's a minority deciding on the others. When you do separate polls, those from choice #1 get to voice their opinion again, leading to a larger majority choice (this time #2 gets 16 votes, #3 gets 11, etc...)
