Day in the life of Charles Walker

Today I’d like to share with the SHL community the day in the life of the two year St. Louis pro.
7:00 AM: I wake up every morning, whether I have a game that day or not, at 7 Am to go on a morning run. I started doing this morning run when I got to college and decided to put more time into Hockey and take this more seriously. The morning run helps me calm my nerves and helps to think more clearly. If I had a game the night before I use the run to reflect on what went well during that game and what I needed to do to improve my game to better my team. I run for as long as I have to until I feel like this reflection is over. I also take my dog with me on this run. She is a fantastic runner and always run with me without fail. It has gotten to the point where she will remind me to go on this run and gets annoyed if I do not get out of bed quickly enough. It usually takes about an hour.

8:00 AM: After I finish my run I shower and eat breakfast. I am a huge fan of frosted flakes. My morning will not have been complete if I did not eat my daily frosted flakes. I also tend to eat either French Toast or scrambled eggs in the morning. I like eating a complete breakfast to jump start my day so that I can be focused on practicing and games.

9:00 AM is when I hit the gym and get my already toned body even more toned. As all of you guys know I have a huge six pack and I like to keep it that way. I also do not forget leg day cause being top heavy is not what I want to happen. I feel good after hitting the gym and I know my body makes Stuart Minkus jealous.

10:00 AM on game day this is when our morning skate happens. Even though morning skate is optional, I still go because as an assistant captain I feel like part of my job is to lead our team onto the right path to victory. I can help by doing this by going to optional morning skates and instructing our rookies and guiding them into becoming prominent hockey players when they called up into the SHL. We do a lot of exercises during morning skates. To start our captain, Viktor Vorkämpfer, will lead in the stretches and once that is taken care of we all divide up into our respected groups. I and a few other defenders work on our 1 on 1 defending and 2 on 1 defending just to make sure we are ready for game day. After that we play a quick 5 on 5 scrimmage and then we come back as a group and I will lead in stretching. Once that is taken care of we all hit the showers and are on our own until game day. Official practices are about the same but a little bit longer and more technical.

11:30 AM Some players leave as quickly as they can to get home to do whatever they got to do before game day but some of us, myself included, stay back and hang out for a little bit and grab a bite to eat. This is a really cool time for us because we can all laugh and have a fun time. This really takes the stress out of having a game that day. It puts us all in a good place and helps us bond as a team. After we all get done eating we go outside of the practice arena and meet up with a few fans who want our signatures and pictures. I love doing this and meeting with fans because it gives me a sense of accomplishment and purpose. All of these fans gushing over is a great feeling and I gladly take pictures and sign as many autographs because it is my way of giving back.

12:30 AM This is when I drive back to my home and take a nap.

1:00-4:00 PM Napping is definitely a pregame ritual for me. If I do not take this nap I promise you my performance will suffer because of this. Furthermore, who does not like a nap?

5:00 PM I drive down to the stadium on game day during this time. I love to blast music during my drive. It is either heavy metal bands like Five Finger Death Punch, Breakdown of Sanity or Disturbed. I also sometimes blast Tech N9ne.

5:30 PM Once I get the stadium I meet up with my team and we got through our game day strategy, discuss any possible line up changes and get pumped up for the game.

6:30-10:30 PM is your typical game day experience. Home games we skate out onto the ice with the crowd cheering us on, national anthem and then game on!

10:30 PM after the game I usually drive home and go to bed to repeat the whole process over again. If we win some of us will go out for drinks to celebrate.

This has been a day in the life of Charles Walker during game day. I know I live an exiting life!

Good read man. I always see you in the gym and practice working hard to make your in-game shape as well as mentally prepared for the game.
