SMJHL Rookies Drafted! A SHL Draft Recap
#1

It has been almost 2 months since the SMJHL draft happened and the season flew by for the then drafted prospects. Last night most of them were able to find out what their new destinations would end up becoming. Lets look back at the draft they had and show the current SMJHL draftees that it doesn’t really matter where you get drafted in the juniors, but that it matters what you do afterwards that can kickstart your careers.

Time to look at how the prospects went last night and we start of course with the results of the first round of the draft.

1. Steelhawks Hamilton Steelhawks (via Winnipeg Jets) - Jakub Trocheck
Original SMJHL Draft Position: 5th overall to the Detroit Falcons
+4 spots

The first overall selection does not really come as a surprise. For many he was even mentioned as the secure first overall selection during his SMJHL draft. The only reason why he was not selected as first skater was his build at that time. As he almost spent all his TPE in skating the general managers of the teams were afraid he would not be able to get a balanced build within the 350 TPE cap. The Detroit Falcons didn’t mind and picked him up as 4th and it showed that they made a good selection with it, as Jakub Trocheck went number one this draft without a doubt. Even though he slipped some with his post game show submissions, he has done a lot of work as an SMJHL Commissioner intern, which even lead to him being promoted to an actual commisioner. Not bad for someone within his first season on the site. Definitely a worthy selection as he rises three spots compared to his original draft position

2. Renegades Texas Renegades - Eddie Andrezjeck
Original SMJHL Draft Position: 8th overall to the Kelowna Knights
+6 spots

Another riser in the ranks is Eddie Andrezjeck, after his fantastic rookie campaign for the Kelowna Knights and the low amount of defenseman in the draft, Andrezjeck could easily be called a future franchise defenseman. He stepped into the first defensive pairing for the Knights at the beginning of the seasing and with the Knights making it to the finals, it showed he was a pillar that they could rely on. The Texas Renegades saw his potential and knew he would be a person they could build their defense around. A solid selection that since his return has shown that he is here to stay this time around.

3. Steelhawks Hamilton Steelhawks (via Minnesota Chiefs) - Noro Wozy
Original SMJHL Draft Position: 20th overall to the Detroit Falcons
+17 spots
The Hamilton Steelhawks came into the draft with two positions where they wanted to add prospects, defense and on the wing. With Trocheck selected as defenseman, it became clear they needed a forward for playing on their wing. With that in mind their eye felt on Noro Wozy.
During the SMJHL Draft there was one player who kept slipping through the ranks and that player was him. Right after being selected by the Detroit Falcons he made a promise that people that selected others would likely regret it. After learning all the stuff about how the SHL works, Wozy turned one of the quickest risers in TPE since the draft. People were surprised he fall that far during the junior draft, but I think people are just as surprised to see his draft stock rise this high. But whatever people say about this pick, it is certainly that Noro Wozy earned it all by himself. He indeed became a force to be reckoned with and if he can continue his TPE earning, he will without a doubt become an important factor in the Hamilton Steelhawks offense.

4. Wolfpack New England Wolfpack (via Portland Admirals) - Xander Green
Original SMJHL Draft Position: 3rd overall to the Prince George Firebirds
-1 spot

The fourth overall selection is the first player selected that actually lost spots compared to his draft position in the SMJHL. Part of this could be that he had no interest of playing for the teams picking earlier, but with the selections made, it actually looks like they would have went with this direction anyway. Needless to say that even though he dropped compared to the juniors draft, that Xander Green is still a solid selection. The New England Wolfpack could use some more prospects for all position and with selecting Green they took the (in their eyes) best center available. For the Wolfpack there is no immediate need of actually needing the prospects so they can get some time to develop on their own pace in the minors. This is good news for the Firebirds, who will atleast be able to use the services of Green for another season. Green being interested a lot in the Wolfpack was also this years least kept secret of the draft as he made it known in as much different ways as possible. Now it is up to him to make his stay with the Wolfpack a success.

5. Stampede Buffalo Stampede (via Hamilton Steelhawks) - Dani Forsberg
Original SMJHL Draft Position: 10th overall to the Prince George Firebirds
+5 spots

One of the biggest surprises for the SMJHL Draft was Dani Forsberg, before the draft he had put out some high quality media and this got teams to notice him immediatly. People felt the 10th overall position where he was grabbed was a reach, but Forsberg was actually even higher than that on Prince George their list and their scouting did not dissapoint as some people (mainly Forsberg himself), saw himself as a 1st overall selection (according to his original draft he also would go 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th etcetera, you get the point). Forsberg probably had the most TPE out of any draft prospect but possibly fell for the same reason as Xander Green did. Hamilton would have been a possible location for the winger, but I would assume they liked the answers Noro Wozy gave them better. This scenario made the Buffalo Stampede happy atleast, as Forsberg was one of the two prospects they coveted. So in an offseason that hurt them a lot, they found a bright spot in being able to bring him to the team. There is no doubt in my mind that if Forsberg continues like he is doing, that he will end up being a great player in the league, and out of the people selected this far, he is the first one I would put the tag ‘future hall-of-famer’ on. It might be to early to judge that, but I feel that he has the potential to make this happen.

6. Wolfpack New England Wolfpack (via Manhattan Rage) - Brett Kennedy
Original SMJHL Draft Position: 9th overall to the St. Louis Scarecrows
+3 spots
Another person who went up in the ranks was Brett Kennedy, one of the prospects that people felt was hardest to rank in the mock, as he was a guy that could go anywhere. Kennedy is also an old timer and wants to stick it out longer with his players this time around and so far he is definitely delivering on that. Kennedy isn’t a center like the most, he is one who is mostly focussing on being a defensive juggernaught instead of an offensive powerhouse that most attackers are hoping to become. Brett Kennedy actually had a history with the Wolfpack franchise as one of the former clients of his agency, Robin Karlsson actually played for the Wolfpack in the past. He is now back with a vengeance and a hunger for success with the franchise that now drafted him. It will be great to see if both centers can proof a solid core up front for the Pack.

7. Stampede Buffalo Stampede -FORFEITED

Due to a series of unfortunate events the Buffalo Stampede lost their ability to select with their seventh overall position. They lost it by tampering with a player they werent even planning to sign. It’s a shame for them, as since they were actually on the rise as they made the playoffs for the first time last season (and actually winning a game in there). Over the next few years they will lose some more picks, but this is one that certainly will hurt their progress.

8. Platoon West Kendall Platoon - Vratislav Zbynek
Original SMJHL Draft Position: 17th overall to the Colorado Mammoths
+9 spots

Another person that skyrocketed into the first round was Vratislav Zbynek. He went under the radar almost the entire season and even with the most mock drafts he was only being selected at the last pick of the first round. West Kendall Platoon liked what they saw and didn’t only select on raw talent, but also a personality that would fit right in with the franchise. Even though the team has not won in a while, they managed to stay competititve over the years and drafting people that will fit right in with them is proving to be a solid strategy for staying competitive it seems. In the playoffs you need a little bit of luck to survive and by adding Zbynek they hope to finally get that piece of luck on their site.

9. Riot Seattle Riot - Roddy Hawkins
Original SMJHL Draft Position: 7th overall to the Detroit Falcons
-2 spots

Roddy Hawkins was a player that was selected right where people expected him. After being selected 7th in the SMJHL he is basically selected 8th overall here due to the removal of the Stampede pick. Hawkins tenure at Seattle Riot would not take long as after he was drafted there was a trade alert quickly after. The Edmonton Blizzard had hoped he would fall right in their lap with their second round picks, but this was too much of a reach to be true. The Riot got an offer they could not refuse and collected 2 million in cap space, a S35 first round selection and a S36 second round selection. Maybe a bit much with these drafts likely being more deep as this one, but if you get a player that has a history with the franchise and one that will stay loyal through a rebuild, then he is likely worth it. Hawkins is a defenseman that focusses more on the physical side of the game and will definitely be a nice piece for the Blizzard to build their new team around.

10. Rage Manhattan Rage (via Edmonton Blizzard) - Hermanis Villy
Original SMJHL Draft Position: 18th overall to the St. Louis Scarecrows
+8 spots

Another player that risen way above his SMJHL draft position is Hermanis Villy, a player which the Manhattan Rage will trust to become a worthy piece for their franchise. The co-manager of the Rage seemed particularly happy with the selection of Skipper as he knew it is a player that might not be that prominent, but very reliable. Skipper had a good player before with Emils Vilmenietis and that is what the Rage management are counting on. They had traded up by moving away Big Z to get to this selection, so you know that they are serious about him as the future of their franchise.

11. Stars Toronto North Stars - FORFEITED
Just as with the Buffalo Stampede pick, the Toronto North Stars lost their first round selection. Luckily for them this hurt not as much as they had a better season and were really close to making it to the finals (if only they did not blow a 3-1 lead). The North Stars are on their last season for a tampering punishment and will be back with a first round selection for next round again. The North Stars did really well in this period as they kept themselves positive and grew towards a team that can make some noise in the playoffs. Despite not having a first round pick, acquiring Big Z and likely signing Reed Laing in the offseason, still make them get out of the draft better as before. But I think the Toronto management will be glad that they can use their first round picks again next season to get even better.

12. Panthers Los Angeles Panthers - Matthew Auston
Original SMJHL Draft Position: Free Agent
Not drafted in SMJHL

The Panthers shocked the league when they selected Matthew Auston with the 12th overall selection (so basically top 10 due to the forfeited picks). But with only having one selection in the first two rounds of the draft, they knew they would have to select a player they would fully believe in developing into a centerpiece for the franchise. As a late entry to the draft Auston has had a great activity in the media section, making good profit of the doubles week by posting a 3000 word article. While he might be behind in development compared to others, his will to improve and his loyalty seem to shine out. The Panthers have gone for an underdog selection here, but it is a pick that could certainly proof all doubters wrong down the line. It will be interesting to see how his career develops, in Los Angeles, they have high hopes for him.

13. Dragons Calgary Dragons - Finn Larsson
Original SMJHL Draft Position: 6th overall to the Colorado Mammoths
-7 spots

Right before the draft Finn Larsson tried to advertise himself:

Quote:Don't hesitate to draft Larsson, I'm the real deal!
-30Mil in cash once doubles week goes in!
-Site activity multi times a day and locker room activity!
- I've written 11 Media articles since creating this character.
I love the SHL!  A pick for Larsson is not a wasted pick!

You would think it would help people convince that he is indeed the real deal and that he would be selected somewhere in the top 10 of the picks. But this wasn’t the case, during the draft he start to wonder if he would be somebody’s second choice. In the end him falling should have a positive effect on him since he ended up on the Calgary Dragons. Due to the depth he will have a few years to develop himself into an SHL worthy center and by the time the old players on the Dragons have regressed into oblivion there is nothing to stop him from being succesfull. While he might not have expected to drop this far himself, it could be a blessing in disguise for Larsson.

14. Wolfpack New England Wolfpack - Vesa Perhonen
Original SMJHL Draft Position: 4th overall to the Montreal Militia
-10 spots
Another player that dropped a lot was center Vesa Perhonen, he was too busy the last season with winning the cup with Montreal that he has lost some opportunities to train and improve himself. The manager of Perhonen has a reputation of having his clients retire early when they get financially independent and there for are passing on the risk of having this happen. The Wolfpack were happy to be re-united with Perhonens management as he already had ties there (just a tie, no leash, wolves don’t like leashes). Perhonen was their third selection at Center this draft and one has to wonder what their plan with them is (if there is a plan at all), but valuewise, it felt like Perhonen would be to good to pass on with a 14th overall selection.

Round 2:
15. Stars Toronto North Stars (via Texas Renegades) - Elias Lindstrom
Original SMJHL Draft Position: 16th overall to the Montreal Militia
+1 spot

Elias Lindstrom is the second Montreal member selected in a row and probably one of the better players of the past season. Despite only playing half a season, his season was really succesfull which resulted in him being one of the most point efficient players while on the ice. Lindstrom was a big questionmark due to prior incidents by his management, but I believe this is something that belongs to the past. This could really be one of the bigger picks of the draft and without the history, he could have easily went in the first round. Lindstrom is looking to become a certainty for the Toronto North Stars and hopes to be able to help them succeed in finally breaking the curse and win the first cup in franchises history. He won one with Montreal early in his career, so you know he won’t break under pressure.

16. Chiefs Minnesota Chiefs - Rambo
Original SMJHL Draft Position: 14th overall to the Colorado Mammoths
-2 spots

With Rambo you have a prime case of 'you know what you get'. He will likely not make enough TPE to ever become a first line star, but you are getting a player that is loyal, steady and making his way upto the big leagues on his own pace. Rambo is a guy that usually gets the 5 training a week done by the 500k training and the activity check, and he is fine with that. He knows his management is fine with it, because he is a prime example of someone who will likely never leave. The Chiefs were one of the few teams actually contacting Rambo before the draft and they made a great pick by selecting him over someone that has a lot more TPE, just because they know they will be able to count on him for years to come.

17. Dragons Calgary Dragons (via Portland Admirals) - Emiya Shirou
Original SMJHL Draft Position: 11th overall to the Vancouver Whalers
-6 spots

This is one of the biggest surprises off the draft, during the draft we've noticed several people saying 'hey Shirou is still on the board. The biggest reason for this is his inactivity right before the draft. A week before he came in saying he was still there but busy and at draft night he appeared again saying the same thing. Due to not being around much in between it had the managers doubting if it was such a wise pick. At times there were talks of people trading down out of the top 5 in order to select this guy, but the activity remained a question. We know real life can get in the way and should definitely be attended to when called upon, so we can only hope all is going upwards for him again and that he will become a steady prospect for the Calgary Dragons, who had a surprisingly good draft in picking up Shirou and Larsson, two prospects people originally thought would be selected higher.

18. Jets Winnipeg Jets (via Hamilton Steelhawks) - Stefan Digrio
Original SMJHL Draft Position: 26th overall to the St. Louis Scarecrows
+8 spots

Digrio is another player that has been trending upwards since the SMJHL draft, he was actually one of the last players selected, so everyone of that which he passed TPE was is a small victory for him. The Jets selected a player that can definitely make it to the SHL if he continues like this. Digrio is the prime example that hard work can get your career on the uprise. You just need to stay active and you will get there.

19. Steelhawks Hamilton Steelhawks (via Manhattan Rage) - Jimmy Wagner
Original SMJHL Draft Position: 1st overall to the St. Louis Scarecrows
-18 spots

Wagner being drafted so low has nothing to do with him actually, but more with the position he is playing. The goaltender position is already filled up pretty nicely in the SHL and that's why the Steelhawks could afford it to wait until the 19th selection to pick up the best goaltender in the draft. Since the activity of their current goaltender is edgy, he could definitely grow in a role as a future starter for the Steelhawks and they have faith in him, given the 10 million contract he was awarded to be able to purchase all equipment for the season. Wagner has the potential to grow into a star in the SHL when the current goaltender elite starts to regress, he will be there to take over a spot and to get that much value at 19th overall is just a brilliant move by the Steelhawks.

20. Jets Winnipeg Jets - Riley Jako
Original SMJHL Draft Position: Free Agent
Not drafted in SMJHL

With the selection of Riley Jako we start a list of players that were signed during the season as a free agent, Jako was one of the 16 players to do championship weeks tasks, so still active at the ending of the season, so there were even selections before him that didn't do the extra effort. Jako might be a slow starter with not that much posts on the board yet, but maybe the Jets can change that and motivate him to continue growing strong.

21. Platoon West Kendall Platoon (via Buffalo Stampede) - Declan Reilly
Original SMJHL Draft Position: Free Agent
Not drafted in SMJHL

I love Reilly and was happy for him to sign in Prince George, his tpe earning has slowed down a bit and he was thinking of being an SMJHL Career guy, but I hope he gives West Kendall a shot and strives to make it to the big league in the end. I know he is a guy that would be capable of it if he wants. But until that day comes, I'm happy to have him on my blueline in West Kendall.

22. Platoon West Kendall Platoon - Ellie Werenski
Original SMJHL Draft Position: Free Agent
Not drafted in SMJHL

The other selection of the West Kendall Platoon showed more interest so far in being part of the Platoon community, immediatly after the selection Werenski has been a part of the discord of the Platoon and really seems to fit right in. Nearing the 200 tpe mark is still a good score for a mid-season signing, and expect Werenski to continue this progress now the draft is done. This could definitely be a player to watch for the upcoming years.

23. Riot Seattle Riot - Cameron Dubois
Original SMJHL Draft Position: Free Agent
Not drafted in SMJHL

I'm running out of words to use and I do not really know much about Dubois. So for now it's just a 'Hi Dubois', hope you enjoy being the last remaining draft pick of this years Seattle draft!

24. Blizzard Edmonton Blizzard - Bartholemew Cechove
Original SMJHL Draft Position: 2nd overall to the Vancouver Whalers
-22 spots

Remember the time the SMJHL teams had a bidding war to move up for the goaltenders? It is quite the opposite in the SHL. Cechove is the person who fell the most compared to his SMJHL draft spot, going from 2nd to 24th is a big fall, but unlike Wagner it is justified here.
Before the draft the management of Bartholemew Cechove already made the world known that he did not want to become part of the SHL, but wished to remain in the juniors forever. Hate to break the news to him, but since there is an actual cap of junior years, we might still see him in action in the SHL, or he retires before that. Either way, at this position in the draft it's basically all or nothing anyway, so the Blizzard did not lose much if it fails.

25. Stars Toronto North Stars - Nick Dupuis
Original SMJHL Draft Position: 21th overall to the Prince George Firebirds
-4 spots

The story of Nick Dupuis during the juniors draft was a nice one, as the Firebirds moved up and traded a pick that wasn't even used in that draft for getting Dupuis. Dupuis had put out some media and looked like a great prospect, but unfortunately his progress slowed down and sometimes he just couldn't be found anymore. This is a pick that is hit or miss for the North Stars, but nothing is lost if it doesn't pan out. If Dupuis however returns, they got a good defensive prospect for the future.

26. Steelhawks Hamilton Steelhawks (via New England Wolfpack, via Los Angeles Panthers) - Robert Haugen
Original SMJHL Draft Position: Free Agent
Not drafted in SMJHL

Now we got to the part where the Wolfpack decided to stock up on future considerations. There wasn't anyone left they wanted to draft and decided to flip this pick to Hamilton for their 27th and future considerations. Robert Haugen was selected here and this was in the beginning missed by the person updating the original draft order. The morning after the draft it still showed Haugen as part of the Wolfpack. Luckily it was notified and fixed bringing Haugen to his real destination.

27. Steelhawks Hamilton Steelhawks (via New England Wolfpack, via Calgary Dragons) - Landon Boeing
Original SMJHL Draft Position: Free Agent
Not drafted in SMJHL

So the Wolfpack had just acquired this pick and figured that they needed more future considerations. So this pick was actually flipped again for more future considerations. After the draft the Wolfpack had, we can only believe future considerations is a center, bringing their total to five centers acquired this draft. Boeing is basically a last resort pick incase Jimmy Wagner walks out of Hamilton, it might happen, it might not, nobody knows, but with Boeing they pick up some extra air in the hopes that he can also grow in an SHL worthy goaltender.

28. Blizzard Edmonton Blizzard (via New England Wolfpack) - Janis Doro
Original SMJHL Draft Position: 15th overall to the Kelowna Knights
-13 spots

And mister irrelevant of the draft is Janis Doro, who dropped 13 spots compared to the SMJHL draft. He was the last player selected and the Blizzard likely picked him up just to have another body in their near empty prospect pool. It could still work out, but he needs to get on his game to make sure he won't stay mister irrelevant forever.

(continue of main post, due to getting post error):

But it could be worse, you could be sitting there in the stands and not have your name called. The wall of shame of this year are the following players that went inactive:

Hans Sorensen - Original SMJHL Draft Position: 12th overall to the Halifax Raiders
Alex Andreoff - Original SMJHL Draft Position: 13th overall to the St. Louis Scarecrows
Niklas Zetterberg - Original SMJHL Draft Position: 22nd overall to the St. Louis Scarecrows
Miguel Sanchez - Original SMJHL Draft Position: 23rd overall to the Kelowna Knights
Cap Whaleback - Original SMJHL Draft Position: 24th overall to the Detroit Falcons
Jarin Aden - Original SMJHL Draft Position: 25th overall to the Colorado Mammoths

Remember guys, it is not too late to make something of your careers. Feel free to come back to the SHL, do your training, do your point tasks and grow as a player. You can sign with whichever team wants you, so get back, get active and sign that contract.
This brings us to the conclusion of how last years SMJHL rookies did it in the draft for the big league. It will be nice to see them progressing in their careers, but first, we will probably see them all back for at least one more season in juniors.

I was so pissed when I fell as far as I did. Now I wouldn't change it for anything. The Dragons locker room is the best place, most active, place I've seen in all SHL.

I can say with 100% certainty that there isn't a locker room today as active as LAP's from s25-s30

but you wouldn't know about that B)
