Welcome back everyone, to the SHL edition of THN scouting reports. Today we are taking a look at the 13th overall pick of the S35 draft, a Los Angeles Panthers prospect who has been lighting it up for the Halifax Raiders in the SMJHL; Chris Smulander.
Smulander has been looking to be a great pick at 13th overall, scoring 22 goals and 52 points last season in the SMJHL, which had him 3rd in the league scoring race. Lets take a look at what this kid has got going for him Code: CK = Checking: 42 Nearly 500 TPE and one of the most balanced builds we can find from a S35 player. Lets take a look at his skill sets in more detail. SK = Skating: 75 One of Smulanders greatest assets is his skating ability. He loves to glide across the ice in high speeds, and his puck handling combined with his speed makes it look like he sees the play in slow motion, due to his amazing ability at such speed. He has been proving to everyone in the SMJHL that he is worthy of his big role in Halifax, and Los Angeles is licking their lips when they see his production. ST = Strength: 70 For a kid in just his 2nd season since being drafted, he has shown great strength down low. He takes his muscle training very seriously, and has proven to his coaching staff that despite his age, he is able to hold his own. He will need to continue beefing up though, if he wants to be ready for the big leagues. EN = Endurance: 65 One of the glaring holes in Smulanders game is his endurance. He is a very complete player who doesn’t have any major strengths, but doesn’t have any major weaknesses either. This one however, is the closest it gets to a weakness. He has still been able to play big minutes (averaged around 22 minutes per game last season) however, Halifax needs him to play even more minutes, and has started off the season playing an average of 2 minutes more per game, and we are looking to see if he can handle that. This is definitely something he will need to work on by the time he gets called up to Los Angeles. PH = Puck Handling: 75 We spoke briefly about his puck handling abilities; here we will talk about them again. It is one of his best attributes, and his ability to get out of trouble has proven to be a key part of his production. He never backs away from a defender and is very slick when it comes to reaction time and decision making. FO = Face Offs: 70 He is the top line centre for the Raiders, and even takes shifts on the bottom line too, which means he needs to be able to win draws. He has averaged around 54.5% on the draws so far, and so Halifax is very content with him in this department as well. However, if he wants a centreman role in the SHL, Los Angeles will expect him to improve greatly in this department. SC = Scoring: 75 Along with puck handling and skating, Smulander’s best qualities come from his ability to shoot the puck. He has a very accurate shot that has been getting stronger and stronger. He is also very quick to let it rip. He put up 22 goals last season and already has 5 to his name this season, look for that to continue all season long. DF = Defense: 70 Finally, the last attractive part of Smulanders very comlete game, is his defensive abilities. He has proven to be a successful two way centre in the SMJHL, by scoring a lot of points and being responsible in his own end. He is a smart player who reads the game well, and thus creates a ton of problems for the opposition on both ends of the ice. Chris Smulander has been electric for Halifax, and has gone off to a quick start in S37, with 5 goals and 13 points in 12 games. Look to him to eclipse the 50 point plateau again this season, and look for him to try and win the top scoring award.
