The Big Slappy Hour #94! Our Big Holiday Spectacular
#1

I'm sitting here at my dad's house, having just put my kids to bed. I've got a Christmas tradition with the kids where I lie down with them for a few minutes and sing them a few carols before leaving them to wait for Santa. I always sing them The Christmas Song, better known by its first line chestnuts roasting on an open fire, as the last song before bed. As it happens in this episode of Big Slappy, both Bonk and I sing carols for your, or at least our own enjoyment. We are also up to our usual shenanigans and hijinks, including many remembrances of Christmas presents past.

Anyway, ate a lot of food today, drank some wine, watched some football, took a pretty sweet nap in a chair in the middle of the living room while everyone carried on around me. All in all a pretty good day.

We here at The Big Slappy Hour sincerely wish you and yours the merriest of Christmases, the happiest of Chanukahs, the craziest of Kwanzas, and a good whatever the hell else any of you knuckleheads may celebrate.

Here is The Big Slappy Hour #94! By the way, the audio on the opening clip and Bonanza is not great. We had a new setup and didn't quite have the kinks worked out yet.

Australian Christmas is kind of odd- because despite the complete and total difference in the seasons, it's still treated as an extremely European holiday in every conceivable sense, even down to details like the food and the carols and the idea of a white Christmas, even though it's generally a solid 90-110F here on the day.

There's certainly many "Australian" Christmas Carols, but they're mostly rubbish, or for very young children, and almost always achieve very little but try to say "hey it's Christmas but warm".
Here's three that stuck to some degree,
Jingle Bells, Australian version (cheesy)
Christmas In The Scrub (for kids)
Six White Boomers (for kids, and Rolf Harris unfortunately still has the best published version, so you'll just have to not think about the fact that he's a convicted pedophile when he does his voice acting.)

In fact, the total lack of decent Australian carols led to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation explicitly commissioning people internally back about 60 years ago to get some nice ones written. They're all still very much still Christian centric in the European style, and some of them have virtually nothing to do with Australia at all, but they're probably all we've got worth a damn, published in 3 groups of 5 as "The Australian Christmas Carols".
LYRICS
Christmas Day (The North Wind) - probably my favourite.
Merry Christmas - One of the best of the bunch
The Three Drovers
The Silver Stars Are In The Sky
Carol Of The Birds
Christmas Bush For His Adorning
The Day That Christ Was Born On
Christmas Night
The Little Town Where Christ Was Born
Sing Gloria
Noel Time
The Christmas Tree
Our Lady of December
Golden Day
Country Carol

The only other song I can think of worth mentioning is Santa Never Made It To Darwin - a song about Cyclone Tracy, which struck Darwin on Christmas Day, 1974, and destroyed something like 90% of the structures there.

Other stuff,

I'm not going to set up that page to be players by score, sorry; I've explicitly refused to do that because it would make things too easy. The index does have a lot of information together, but it's only stuff that anyone could gather with the public data if they had the time and inclination. More powerful tools such as full lists of players are things I only have privately, and things I only use after the season is over anyway.

For fantasy team names for the keeper league, I'm personally going city name team name (the Little Rock Federals), but realistically you can do whatever you want.

Have a Merry Christmas! Smile
