A Rookie, a Budding Star & a Mentor A quick look at Edmonton's 3rd line.

The Edmonton Blizzard are at quite the fascinating stage right now. They have a peculiar mix of fresh young faces that are eager to make their mark on the SHL and a cast of veterans looking for those last few triumphs to tell their children about when they drive them to hockey practice. With grizzled players like Nikolaus Scholz, Wyatt Wøllker, Michael McFadden and upstarts like Brady McIntyre, Jim Elliot, Tor Tuck, Connor Tanner, Hercules Rockefeller, it’s quite an interesting dynamic.

The most noteworthy synergy of new and old has to be occurring on what the team will start with on the third line for the Blizzard. Theo Kane, fresh off of his homecoming signing, was once one of the premier scorers in the SHL and spent fifteen seasons with the Blizzard from S21 to S35. Kane spent last season with the Texas Renegades, tallying a 32 point campaign during an impressive run during the Renegades contention for the Presidents Trophy. He is essentially in the very end of the twilight of his career and has returned to where it all began to chase a Challenge Cup and to end his career in front of the fans that adored him when it all started.

On the opposite wing, a fresh face will be leaning on Theo Kane’s wealth of experience. Yannick Berger, fresh off his SHL debut in G6 and G7 against Winnipeg, will be making his SHL Regular Season debut on the third line. Berger had an outstanding year in Halifax, acting as their Captain and notching 51 points in 50 games played. That’s over a point per game pace! Not bad, kid! Not many rookies breaking into the league have the wealth of experience and expertise to learn from like Theo Kane, and Blizzard management expect this role to be a boon to the young Austrian two-way forward.

Between these two drastic ends of the spectrum, they’ll be centered by one of, if not the strongest third line centers in the entire SHL, Tigole Bitties. Bitties is entering his third season in the SHL and is coming off of a strong 46 point campaign. Bitties will seek to continue his momentum forward and to add the depth that is needed for a long Challenge Cup Playoff push.

The Blizzard management hope that this trail mix of players on the third line can result in some chemistry that hasn’t been seen in Edmonton in some time. Who knows, maybe one of these guys will be the ones that can knock out the Jets in Game 7 this time for a change.
