but at the same time you're off the ice and your line chemistry and possession are hampered  Hmm

I LITERALLY SAID THAT ALREADY. But it doesn't mean yours isn't.

Okay, but what happens in your absence? Using last season's lines and builds, so not a precise analogy, but what if you are replaced on the second line by <a href='index.php?showuser=2873' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-34'>karey</a>? His player is a fair bit worse by virtue of being younger, and has a completely different decision-making ratio that would likely hamper his performance with Selich and Koroviev. So did you really?

^^ this exactly. You can’t make a comparison player versus player. The only time this could become true is a lower TPE player would push a game misconduct for the higher tpe player, yet even still the loss is equated via strength of replacement. If you may think of this as more of a WAR sabermetric, as I know <a href='index.php?showuser=2793' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-3'>kckolbe</a> you know baseball a bit more.

So minimizing that number of whomever replaces you subsequently could mean a hell of a lot more than the better player simply leaving the ice. So to use Zach’s example, Buffalo losing you would be more detrimental than say Minnesota losing a first liner last season as the next up was just as good as the player he’s replacing over the next five minutes.

Honestly, we could parse the ins and outs of such scenarios all day. The point is, it *isn't* a non-factor.

Are those asterisks a “non-factor”?

Thats why I didn't really subtract the fighting minutes from the players cause realistically your still in the box and being useless. This is about trying to calculate the effectiveness of hits + the ability to match PIM created by the player vs their ice time. Fights happen sure and some of those PIM's definitely aren't directly connected to the checks but there is a correlation between the higher someones CK attribute the more PIM's they take.

It's not like there is anyother stat that could openly effect Hooks - Trips - Delay of games, etc etc.

The coverage here is broad yes, but the trends between high CK + low disc = higher PIMs, aka not good for the team in the grand scheme of things.

The main point is compare those able to hit often, not get hit as often back, and keep their PIM's low in relation to their total MP.

Id value a player who maybe only threw 500 hits with 3.2% PIM vs MP over one who dished out 800 with a 6.5%.

I'll agree with that. I do think they are somewhere in between non-factor and straight-up penalty, though.

How come I'm not allowed to at least make the spreadsheet? I was Top 5 in PIMs last season.

Hits taken is a weird stat in STHS, some of those hits are during faceoffs so you'll see it being higher for centers. In addition, it shows all hits taken, even if you continue to have the pick after it. With injuries off those hits mean nothing really.

I'm pretty sure the hits taken stat only accounts for hits in which you don't lose the puck. So the higher the number the more effective you are protecting the puck.

I've checked games and it includes both in the in game stats.

Yeah, which, for this metric, penalizes players for puck control. Honestly, I find this article pretty much pointless after presenting the raw numbers. Without giveaways and takeaways, it's hard to really glean much from hits and hits taken in terms of how effective of a hitter a player is.
