S46 SMJHL Prospect Showcase - Top 3 Physical Players
#1

I figured I'd look at some other measures for this thread and present the top 3 players who had the most hits during the S46 SMJHL Prospect Showcase Regular Season. Note that this does not include the statistics from the playoffs.

Joshua Maugher - Defense -  (Blazers)
At 6'11, 290lbs, this guy is a monster, and he's out to hit. This Canadian Defensive Defenseman is tied for first place in total number of hits (63) during the S46 SMJHL Prospect Showcase Regular Season, most players will want to stay out of his way. If injuries were a thing in this league, Maugher would probably be causing a lot of them.

Positive Notes
  • Tied for #1 overall in the Prospect Showcase for most hits (63)
  • Contributed 12 Points for his team, including 2 goals.
  • 37 shots blocked, #5 overall
  • Total workhorse. He had the most MP for the Blazers (24.34 AMG).
Negative Notes
  • Lots of PIMs. Maugher was in the box a lot of the time with 26 PIM in 20 games.
Final Comments
  • Joshua Maugher is a powerful defenseman who will be quite effective in the future, provided he maintains his training. At this point, the primary concern might be the amount of PIMs he gets, but even at 26, it isn't too terrible. I'd anticipate Maugher going fairly early in the draft.

Max Power - Left Wing - (Wranglers)
Although not nearly as big as Maugher, Max Power is no slouch. A Power Forward who is 6'3" 240lbs of hitting potential from the United States, Power tied Maugher for the #1 spot for most hits (63) in the Prospect Showcase Regular Season.

Positive Notes
  • Tied for #1 overall in the Prospect Showcase for most hits (63)
  • Contributed 4 Points for his team, including 1 goal.
  • PIMs were fairly low for the amount of physical contact he makes. 14 PIM in 20 games.
Negative Notes
  • Ended the regular season with a Plus/Minus of -4, but it should be noted that the majority of the players on his team were also in the negatives.
Final Comments
  • Max Power is definitely a strong power forward, who punishes his opponents by physical contact. Moreover, Max is able to bring the hits without causing many problems for his team, as he only received 14 PIM through 20 games. In terms of point production, Max only had 4 points in 20 games. He's going to want to increase some of his Scoring/Passing/Skating/Defense/Puck Handling skills if he wants to be a little more attractive to teams.

Sergi Volchenkov - Right Wing - (Blazers)
Volchenkov is the smallest of the three at 6'3" 225lbs, but is still a hard-hitting Russian winger. A Playmaking Forward by design, Volchenkov is also quite effective in being a physical presence on the ice. Volchenkov was third overall for the most hits throughout the Prospect Showcase Regular Season.

Positive Notes
  • Third overall in the Prospect Showcase for most hits (51).
  • Contributed 7 Points for his team, including 5 goals.
Negative Notes
  • Ended the regular season with a Plus/Minus of -10, which is tied for the lowest on the team.
Final Comments
  • Volchenkov has been shown to be able to both hit and score, which is quite impressive. Although it isn't good to put too much stock into this statistic, he did have a Plus/Minus of -10 on his team, which was tied for the lowest on the Blazers. The majority of the team had a positive Plus/Minus, so there are some aspects of his game that Volchenkov will need to work on improving during training, such as the Defense skill. Aside from that, if Volchenkov continues his training and works on some defensive/positioning sense, he'll do well in his career.
