Breakfast of Champions: What keeps this rookie classes engines running?

By: Fay Rerraro

Throughout the years nutrition and sports have gone hand in hand since the beginning of time. The body needs fuel, and an athletes body is no exception. As the times have changed so has the way we thought about sports nutrition. As we draw closer to the S64 SMJHL prospect draft, I sat down with several of our up and coming superstars to discuss what keeps them going through the tough schedule of the Prospects Tournament.

Jax Duggan (Vipers): Jax Duggan, coming from a disappointing Memorial Cup run where his Guelph Storm narrowly lost the championship, is no stranger to needing all the fuel his body can get. Now that he’s playing with and against tougher players, in a much busier schedule he has seemingly reverted into old habits. “I used to eat eggos before every game when I was younger, something about drenching those waffles in real Canadian maple syrup and the sugar high that comes from it really gets me going out there on the ice.” When I asked him if he was concerned with having a fairly unhealthy pre-game meal he simply stated “Everyone out here knows the risks of the things they do, I eat a bunch of Eggos before getting my gear on, and everyone else willingly gets on the ice with Wibbly McButternutz. We all face our demons.”

Lex Peters: Lex hasn’t let the change in scenery change the way he work before a game. He seems to favour the old style of carbo loading before his long shifts on the ice opting to eat Swedish meatballs and pasta. I tried to clarify that he meant spaghetti and meatballs, but he quickly explained “I used to get a ton of weird looks in the cafeteria before games on my club team. It really isn't that much different from italian meatballs!”

Harry Carpet (Vipers): Harry was one of the tougher interviews to get, not because of the busy schedule, or intense media desire. Harry was tough to get to sit down in the chair, He explained to me that before each game he drinks “a ton of coffee”, when asked to explain exactly how much coffee a ton was, he opted not to answer. He did however mention that every once in a while he also likes to bake his own karjalanpiirakka, which after researching, is a traditional Finnish pastry made using rye flour and stuffed with rice porridge or mashed potatoes.

Espen Knutsen Jr. : Espen is one of the few competing in this year's draft that doesn't have a pre game meal, however he did provide a brief anecdote about his time spent playing in christmas tournaments in his home of Norway. “Back in Norway, I lived across the street from a famous Norwegian Deli that was right on my way to the rink where I played junior hockey. I played in a Christmas weekend tournament one year and many hours before the game we went in there and ordered a Norwegian christmas specialty named Smalahove, which for you foreigners is a sheep's head best served whole. My siblings and I always fought for the eyes, I won't get into too much detail but let's just say I'm glad that was a once a year tradition.”

Corey Kennedy (Vipers): Kennedy also seems to subscribe to an older philosophy of pre game nutrition, at least for morning games “Steak and Eggs for afternoon games, steak medium rare, eggs over easy... LOTS of hot sauce.” Corey does seem to change things up however for games later in the day. I had asked him how he can afford that much steak on a junior pay level he added “I usually have some thing a little leaner for night games, fresh fish pasta or just some nice protein and veggies.” One can assume that the reason for those leaner meals would be the post game timmies runs with his teammates on the vipers.

Wibbly McButternutz (Vipers): Last but not least was the fan favourite, hard hitting, “dick slapping” Wibbly McButternutz. Not seeming very impressed with the interview, or focused on more important things going on in his locker room, Mcbutternutz was straight to the point. When asked about his pregame meal choices, he picked up the recorder, stared me dead in the eyes and said “I enjoy a cheese whiz & bologna sammy on the finest of white Wonder bread with a sprinkle of pepper, just to put hair on my balls.  You can quote that.” And quote that I did Wibbly, quote that I did.

Going into this article I had no idea what to expect from these young superstars, but honestly, looking at these young men, where they come from and how they play, everything lines up perfectly. Either everyone has something from their past, their homeland, or their personality that goes into how they play, and that certainly is no different to how they eat. Look for these young men to make a dramatic difference both at, and after, tomorrows draft.
