With the SMJHL offseason wrapping up and preseason about to get under way, and with the SMJHL Awards Committee somehow forgetting that they have jobs which consist of giving players awards, it felt like the perfect time to introduce a new award for SMJHL players to hope that they could win...or not.

In Italy, a popular satirical show called Striscia la notizia hands out an award called il tapiro d'oro (golden tapir) which is a "prize" given to any Italian celebrity or public figure who has done something particularly stupid, bad or embarrassing in any given week. The award has gained significant popularity in Italy and so it's time to bring it over to this side of the ocean and into the SMJHL. We couldn't translate it directly and call it the Golden Tapir, no that would be stupid...and sound awful. So without further ado it's time to present to the SMJHL.....

The Golden Aardvark!!!

The Aardvark is the lucky animal that will become the namesake of the SMJHL's very own Tapiro d'Oro.

The Golden Aardvark will be a weekly award presented to any SMJHL player/manager/staff who has a particularly bad week. Maybe a player had an awful week on the ice, or had a big slip up in the media. What if a goalie got pulled multiple times in the same week or a manager made themselves look bad in a trade? Did a member of head office make a decision so awful you wonder how they got the job in the first place? Well these types of people could be candidates to win a weekly Golden Aardvark. Of course the Golden Aardvark team have eyes everywhere and know about all the awful things going in the SMJHL but maybe you know someone affiliated with the SMJHL who had the kind of week described above? If that's the case then PM @BDonini with the player and what they've done and maybe your nominee can end up winning their very own Golden Aardvark. So now of course the question on everyone's mind has to be...who's going to win the first Golden Aardvark? Well don't worry because it's time to answer that question. The SMJHL's first ever Golden Aardvark goes too....

Oliver Cleary of the Montreal Militia(kind of)!!!!!!!

Congratulations @Buster for being the first recipient of this prestigious award. Cleary was touted as one of the S47 SMJHL draft's top prospects with many experts considering him a lock for the top 5 and even a possibility to go 1st or 2nd overall but that was not the case on Tuesday night as the Canadian offensive defenseman watched himself slip out of the top 3 and then out of the top 5 and then the meltdown began as a visibly frustrated Cleary slipped out of the first round altogether before finally being selected by the Montreal Militia. The Cleary drama didn't end there however as the Toronto native stormed into the Militia's press conference Wednesday morning claiming that he never accepted a contract and asking why they were attempting to introduce him as a new Militia player to the fans. It's believed that Cleary doesn't like the organization or some current members of the organization and so he is actually holding out from signing a contract meaning that he won't be available to suit up for the Militia in tomorrow's preseason opener. The Militia have held firm so far and maintained that they own Cleary's rights and that if he doesn't sign he won't play this season. Who will break first? Will Cleary finally decide that he wants to play to avoid risking an even bigger drop in his SHL draft stock? Will the Militia decide to give in and trade the rights to their 2nd round selection for some assets that they can make use of? Either way, all the drama surrounding Cleary's draft week is enough to see him claim the Golden Aardvark for week 1 of the SMJHL's S47. We'll see you again next week as we present someone else with the prestigious Golden Aardvark.
