Barry’s Blog - Part 2

Wordcount: 515

I’ve gotten a lot of great feedback on my first blog, but is has taken a while to “pick up the pen” and write a second part. Life in Calgary so far has been crazy, especially being part of the Challenge Cup Finals.

Unfortunately we were swept 4-0 against West Kendall Platoon. A series which was much closer than it looks by the score. West Kendall needed two overtime games and we outshot them in three out of four. It feels weird, even when I’ve only had like a minute and a half of ice time throughout the series. I was part of the team, the team that overcome all odds and managed to get to the final in their second year of their rebuild. For some players it was the first time being in the finals, some have already had a taste of success. The team was positive the entire series, such resilience. It was amazing to see and be a part of.

The day after we were eliminated we came back to The Big Parm to clean our lockers. With the loss on everyone's faces some players held some interviews. I tried to sneak in and out, because I didn’t feel like answering questions. I failed, a local reporter from the Calgary Sun noticed me and came up to ask a few questions. She asked how I felt. Well I feel terrible, not for myself, but for the team and the fans. So close, but so far away. Then she asked what my expectations are for the upcoming season. I’m looking forward to it, but I really want some vacation time first. I’ve had some talks with the coaching staff and it’s quite clear what they expect from me and I’m going to do everything to deliver.

After I got back in my car, GM of the Dragons called me. “Hey Barry, just want to congratulate you on an amazing season in Kelowna and last few games with us in the playoffs. Wish you a great vacation with your family and talk soon about the future.” We still have a contract to extend. I thought it was all a done deal, but they need some extra time to figure it all out. I’m confident it will get sorted. They want me here and I want to be here. Driving to the hotel I see city workers removing all the playoff banners in the street. People on the street are also looking disappointed. I get it, but it’s not the end. Calgary will be stronger again next year. We have so much potential.

After I picked up my stuff at the hotel it’s time to check-out and drive back to Kelowna. Tomorrow we fly to the Netherlands to start a small European trip my girlfriend planned. We are going to visit Amsterdam, Utrecht, Berlin, Prague, Vienna and Budapest. Quite some travelling, but I’ve already told her I don’t want to rush anything. I definitely need rest and I hope I get some with this crazy trip planned.

Will write more after I get back.
