Sterling Slaughter arriving to announce his declaration into the SMJHL draft
Growing up in the inner city of Los Angeles, you either played basketball, football, or was a gang banger. That wasn't the case for me. I could rollerskate before I could properly run. All I could dream about was lacing up the skates and making a name for myself in the world of hockey. As a kid, we had to commit to this dream of mine at an early age. We packed out bags from beautiful California and moved to the blistering cold state of Wisconsin.
There I elevate my game enough to be selected to join the Team USA U14 Developmental Camp. Thats where I started to thrive as a player. I entered High School as a puny freshman but standing at 5'4, I started on the top line on Varsity and lead our team on a deep state title run. We ended up getting bounced in the Semi-Finals but the stage was set. From that moment on, major college program after another send me intrest letters, in house visits, and all that jazz. Eventually I grew into my body and the personal accolades come with it. "Wisconsin Mr. Hockey", "High School All American" but none of that ever mattered to me as we were entering my Senior year and we have yet to compete for a state title. During that summer, I was invited to play for the Team USA U17 National Team in the World Championships. I was reluctant to accept but after getting pushed by my teammates, I joined the team. We were heavy underdogs to even make it into tournament play as our hockey development program wasn't as in depth as a country like Canada or Russia but none of that ever mattered to me. I helped lead us to the Finals were we lost in OT to the Canadian National Team. I closed the tournament with 17 Points on 10 Goals. Going back to High School, I knew I had unfinished business to take care of and I wouldnt rest until we hoisted the state championship. I set the Wisconsin state record for goals in a season with 71 and we cruised to the state championship winning the evasive trophy I dreamed of. But quickly after that, I had much larger goals and dreams. I wanted to win a Four Star Cup. The only issue was, I had little to no draft buzz so instead, I enrolled to the University of Michigan to help create some hype. After the first season as a Wolverine, I quickly knew I got as good as Ill ever be in college, but after close consideration I was advised to stick it out for one more season. I gave Michigan everything I physically had and here I stand in front of the media now. Everything all started with me just being a kid from California with a dream and an opportunity. Now I have larger dreams and I hear by announce my intentions to end my college eligibility and declare myself for the SMJHL prospect draft. I would first like to thank my support system around me. None of this was an easy decision but the support of both my parents really help along this decision. Furthermore Id like to thank the University of Michigan for hosting me and letting me wear the Maize and Blue. It was a wild ride these two seasons and without the platform they allowed me to perform on, none of this may have even been possible. Im excited to continue my hockey journey and hopefully a team takes a chance on me on Monday night. Thank you to those who supported me along every step of the way. (627 words)
