While late in Season 49, the Los Angeles Panthers have finally announced their captains. With the team starting to turn the corner on their rebuild and with a number of solid pieces to start building around, the Panthers are confident they have identified a leadership group that will stand the test of time, most notably with those who will be wearing a letter for this season (and hopefully many more).
First up, wearing one of the two As for the Panthers this season: Hiro Fujikawa! @"marley" Nearing the 1,000 TPE mark as a S45 prospect, Fujikawa is starting to heat up and become a productive winger, and with his demeanor in the locker room he is already a major staple of the organization. GM Fredrick Wastlund had this to say about Fujikawa: "He’s really surprises us [GM Wastlund and O’ Connor] at how much he’s ready to be a vocal leader in the LR. I think it’s the focus he has every practice and training session, the guys really see that and they step it up. He’s like a battery charging everyone up." The second Alternate captain for the Panthers will be: Further along in his development (S43 and the oldest of the leadership group other than Mauldin) and considered one of the few major veterans on the team, Winter has made the locker room an incredibly hospitable and worthwhile place to be for all the young players and prospects. His progression has seen him become a solid goal-scorer, and only looks to be getting better as he is given more responsibility. Wastlund had this to say about Winter: "He’s every bit like his father and his grandfather. Poised and reserved Philipp is the type to lead by example, he’s one of the oldest players we have and I think his steady vibe is needed when things get tough for everyone." And finally, wearing the C for S49 and possibly beyond: Cannellini has apparently made Panthers leadership very enamored with his progress thus far, as one of the most productive TPE earners in his draft class and taking on a first line role already. Time will only tell if he can keep it going and truly live up to the expectations of wearing a C for a team with a history of strong leadership. Wastlund had this to say about the young center: "We love his voice in the LR and even though he’s a young kid, everyone listens to every word, he’s a born leader and I know everyone believes that he can lead us to a cup. In just a short time “Canny” has taken the reins for us and presumed the role of captain, without the C. We’re just making it official now." With the announcements finally out of the way, the Panthers can look forward to seeing this trio lead the way for future success and deep playoff runs.
