What a difference a season makes. A once powerful nation, Sweden's hockey program had taken bump after bump through the s40s and found themselves in the basement tier of IIHF programs before the S48 tournament. Under new management, Federation Head Ola Wagstrom tempered team expectations, telling them that this was the first season of a long rebuild, and to prepare for a couple of seasons of disappointment before the blue and gold would rise again.
Fuck were we wrong. Sweden came out of the gate an average team, but climbed through their group game after game to find themselves with the second best record going into the elimination rounds. This success was premised on the backs of two players who played their final professional games: Crossfit Jesus and Mattias Enqvist. Additionally, Wagstrom made the choice to ride the hot hand and play Sebastian Primeau over Kata Vilde; the clear frontrunner to mind the net in the tournament. Swedens road to the Gold Medal went through three giants of the IIHF world: Canada, Ireland, and the US of A. Despite overwhelming odds, Sweden won gold, tied for the lowest ranked team to ever do so in IIHF history. The Swedes did not have to wait long for success. Going into Season 49, Sweden bid farewell to numerous stars who helped lead the team to their gold medal: Crossfit Jesus, Marcus Meliodas, Gustav Helzberg, and Mattias Enqvist. The Country of Sweden thanks you for bringing honor to our program once more. The SMJHL declaration period brought in a number of exciting new prospects to the Swedish mafia. Wingers Henrik Lekberg Osterman, Gylfi Eriksson, and Marcus Ohlsson have all joined the fold, and put up fantastic rookie seasons for Colorado, Kelowna, amd Vancouver, respectably. Additionally, rookie Outlaws goalie Tobias Lindemann looks to be the Swedes Goalie of the future. Finally, the Swedes transferred in the African born Niklas Fuhrberg, a gritty power forward who will intimidate nations for years to come. Juulius Smonk, the Antarctic junior free agent, will join these s50 Swedes for the World Juniors, coached by Ohlsson. In addition to Smonk, the Swedes tallied a high profile transfer in Noah Gallagher, the S47 Irish winger currently signed to Winnipeg. Gallagher brings a physical two way presence to the lineup and has a knack for finding the back of the net as well. The Swedes are now prepared to announce the roster of players prepared to dedend their gold: Forwards: Hippo Passamus Dani Forsberg Ola Wagstrom *moving back to Forward* Kristoffer Svensson Noah Gallagher *Rookie* David Fantobens Tyler Tougard Ricky Spanish Savoli Tankovic Gylfi Eriksson *Rookie* Niklas Fuhrberg *Rookie* Defense: Leopold Lockhart Dylan Karlsson Jøln DuBølk Gunnar Soderberg *Forward playing as D* Henrik Lekberg Osterman *Forward playing as D* *Rookie* Sven Brokstad Marcus Ohlsson *Forward playing as D* *rookie* Goalies: Kata Vilde Sebastien Primeau Rookies: Noah Gallagher Gylfi Eriksson Henrik Lekberg Osterman Niklas Fuhrberg Marcus Ohlsson Sweden congratulates and welcomes the new members of this squad.
