Crash and Crush! (Cossack Edition)

So, it had come, the day of the SMJHL draft. A few days before the draft Ruslan and his boyhood friend Danila were joking and debating about how they should show up to the draft ceremony. Several funny ideas were thrown around like actually finding and renting out a real Zaporozhets which is like Soviet Union Fiat 500 apparently? It would not just be funny due to the looks of the car, but also interesting for the fact that the name of the car is Ruslans surname and also the car was made in Danila's and Ruslan's home country, the wonderful Ukraine. But all of that was just jabbering of two very excited boys planning their perfect draft entrance.

Names started being called out and, he'd be lying if Ruslan didn't say he was mildly disappointed that he didn't go in the first round. All that work in Europe and not a single thanks? To start round 2, electric boogaloo the Flying Dutchman Mitchell Van Der Heijden was drafted. Van Der has been a somewhat friendly rival since Ruslan showed up and that probably wont change. 2 picks later, Ruslan heard his name...butchered on live TV. But hey, 13th isn't bad at all. He went up, shook hands with St. Louis Scarecrows GM, put on the Number 50 jersey and got his picture taken before heading into the little room where all the newly drafted prospects can mingle.

It was a fun time, but watching on the monitor in there Ruslan couldn't help but notice that his friend Danila wasn't picked in the 2nd round. He knew this wouldn't sit well with him and would sour the night. Sure enough, half an hour later Danila was drafted to the Kelowna Knights at 24th overall. He seemed happy but Zapo knew Dan was burning with embarrassment of not getting picked sooner. The party was short with Dan leaving after a few soda's for the hotel room. Ruslan didn't linger too long either.

The next day Ruslan and Danila said their goodbyes, the former wishing the latter well in Canada before setting out south to St. Louis. Arriving in St. Louis, the two boys still kept in contact daily if not every other day about life, the new cities, and of course their play. As things started to get serious however, Ruslan and Danila came face to face with the fact that they are going to be opponents on the ice together, not friends.

Zapo the Cossack started off hot and never looked back, staying within the top 5 in rookie scoring all year as the team fluctuated between 3rd and dead last, before settling to the basement of the league. As the season wore on and Ruslan bonded over Missouri style BBQ and may have taught many how to drink wodka like in old country.

The season came and went with Zapo and the Scarebros finishing 8th, and Dan the man's Knights 9th. This set up a showdown between the two. But Ruslan was noticing that his friend seemed distracted often during their games and this series put it in the spotlight to him. It was odd, what could make his somewhat shy comrade seem so lost in the clouds. After the game 6 win, in which Ruslan buried the eventual game winner he met with his bud and was quickly given a letter, being informed that it was for his goaltender and friend Elizabeth Doyle, a fiery redheaded lass from Ireland. When Danila asked him to slip it in her locker like shy middle schooler it clicked for Ruslan. Dan the man was crushing, hard.

Ruslan has always been confidant, and with no nerves about talking to his teammate and friend he headed over, handing her the letter "This is from one of the Knights, my friend Danila. He couldn't get in the Locker-room but wanted to give you this" Before ducking off to freshen up for a night on the town in Canada, where many of us are old enough to drink.

Now Ruslan has no idea about how Doyle feels about it and, though all the scarecrows have kept in touch with the SHL draft upcoming, she has said nothing of the letter of which he is certain is full of Danila's heart.
