Danish Netminder Drawing Attention

In a suburb of Copenhagen, Denmark, a lanky 16 year old is drawing scouting attention from SMJHL front offices. Frans Eller, the 6’4” butterfly goaltender is making strides en route to accomplishing his hockey dreams. The young Dane finds himself firmly entrenched in the #1 goaltender position for Denmark’s U18 squad and has been featured in international games and has shined.

Eller seals the post.

“He’s got the raw tools to make it big in the SHL” one unidentified scout from the Halifax Raiders stated. “He’s large, positions well, and has strong reaction times. He could definitely improve his athleticism and reading the play, but that will come with time and more starts.” Eller has tallied a 9.12 save percentage, coupled with a 2.07 GAA through his 32 international starts over the previous two seasons. That is historic for a Danish goaltender, and he’s only going to breaking down more barriers for the growth of netminding for the Scandinavian nation. With these impressive youth stats taken into consideration, it’s important to note that Eller isn’t exactly a trailblazer for Danish goaltending.

“Peter Larson, the goalie for the Rage. He’s great. I model a lot of my game after him. He’s about the same size as me, a Butterfly goaltender.”

Larson, along with the Manhattan Rage, are knocking on the door to a Challenge Cup in a tightly contested Atlantic Division. Larson, a S46 draftee, has broken the 1000 TPE barrier and is pushing for more as he sets his eyes on a championship and individual accolades.

“It’s tough for me” says Frans. “I love watching Peter, but I grew up watching Erik Chisling who is now the GM of the New England Wolfpack. I’d love to one day go up against Peter in an SHL game, and it’d be great if it worked out so I could play for Mr. Chisling’s team.”

Eller celebrates with his team after being selected as player of the game.

With Eller’s agent’s connection to the Wolfpack, if he can develop properly, it’s not at all unlikely that he won’t be a future goalie for the ‘Pack. Eller’s agent remains close friends with Chisling and the New England front office. One thing is for sure, even with the connections and the raw talent, it’s going to be a long and winding road for Eller if he wants to pencil his name in as a starting goaltender in the SHL. SMJHL franchises should take note - if you need a starting goaltender, you should probably circle S52 as Eller will be making his arrival.
