Canada Unveils S52 IIHF Roster

With the Challenge Cup finals having concluded in the SHL, Canada has released its squad for the tournament, featuring two changes from the squad that saw themselves unfortunately eliminated at the hands of Czechia in the quarter-finals despite dominating the game. Both changes come in net, as both of Canada's S52 IIHF transfers begin their international legacies between the pipes.

CENTERS

Robert Phelps (@DrunkenTeddy Steelhawks ) : Phelps took a minor step back in S52, not hitting point-per-game for the first time in a while for Hamilton, although he still had a great season, coming thirteenth in league scoring with 17 goals and 49 points. He will be once again a key piece in the Canada squad, as he has been almost his entire career, although this time he will only be wearing the 'A' this season.

Steven Moyer (@CanadianDuck pride ) : Moyer had a phenomenal S52 for San Francisco, who went back to winning the President's trophy this season. Moyer had 22 goals and 55 points on the season, just one point shy of tying Phillip Winter for most points in the league. Always a key piece of the puzzle for Canada as well, Moyer in this kind of form for Canada would be lethal.

Matt Kholin  (@Kalakar Barracuda ) : Despite Tampa Bay's woes this season, Kholin enjoyed a breakout season for the Barracuda, putting up 14 goals and 42 points for a career year, along with some solid two-way numbers. He will play a bigger role with Canada after proving he can thrive in a role of bigger importance.

Bo Kane (@NONAME pride ) : Kane returns for his second tournament for Canada after having played his rookie season in San Francisco. The S49 second overall pick had 7 goals and 15 points in his debut season, and he will develop into a key player for both club and country.

WINGERS

Jeff Brogen (@Flowseidon pride ) : Brogen had a fantastic season in S52, scoring at exactly point-per-game with 50 points in 50 games, and winning the Jay McDonald Trophy as the (joint) top goalscorer in the league, finding the back of the net an impressive 27 times. He will once again be a top line player this tournament.

Jack Kennedy (@JRed94 syndicate ) : Kennedy had another great season for Chicago, matching last season's point total by putting up 48 points for the Syndicate despite only averaging about 18:45 average time on ice. He will once again be playing a top-six role and get significant powerplay minutes.

Dick Clapper (@5ympathies Wolfpack ) : Clapper exploded onto the scene this season for New England, putting up just short of a point per game by scoring 24 goals and 47 points. As he grows more and more into a key player for Canada, he will see an expanded role this season as well.

Aaron Wilson (@aaronwilson Steelhawks ) : Wilson had another great season for President's trophy runner-ups Hamilton, as despite his point total decreasing from S51, he still put up 25 goals and 54 points, good for 3rd in league scoring and just two goals and points shy of top in the league. Performing very well in a depth role for Canada last tournament, Wilson will likely see an increase in time this time around.

Sophia Bennett (@goilers Steelhawks ) : Bennett is going to be playing her last tournament for Canada this season, as the team is looking to integrate some of its younger players next season onwards, and to pay respects to her amazing international career for our nation, she will be wearing the 'C' for this tournament as we hope to send her off with a last gold medal. Bennett had a very solid S52 for the Steelhawks last season, putting up 15 goals and 41 points after signing for a season as a free agent this off-season.

Theo Morgan (@Otrebor13 Panthers ) : Morgan regressed a bit from his impressive S51 campaign, with his point total going down from 32 to 30, but he will nonetheless be an important squad player who can be a lethal sniper on his day.

Atlas Rush (@Rublic Dragons ) : Rush did not get the most points for Calgary this season, scoring 4 goals and 10 points, but he's a tough body who isn't afraid to get into the scrappy areas, hitting 121 times last season, and is solid in a depth role for doing that job.

Dale Miller: (@dmills3 Steelhawks ) He just kind of exists, I guess. I don't really know what else I can say about him.

DEFENSEMEN

Gary Grease (@FlappyGiraffe Jets ) : Grease returns to the team for potentially his last tournament, too, after putting up 28 points in Winnipeg last season. Always a key player on the backline despite being several years into regression, Grease will once again log big minutes and be relied on for the team to have a turn in fortune from last campaign, and he is the other assistant captain.

Thomas Bathory (@vbottas17 Panthers ) : Bathory scored 4 goals and 18 points on high-scoring wild card seed Los Angeles, and he will be a middling piece of the blueline for Canada again this tournament.

Oliver Cleary (@Buster Panthers ) : Cleary did not have the same offensive production he saw last season, as he only put up half of the 26 points he got in S51, but he made sure to make his mark on the ice in another way, as he secured a second consecutive Turd Ferguson trophy for most PIMs in the league, and had 157 hits, along with 61 blocked shots.

Lyle Odelein III (@Huck24 Specters ) : Odelein played an expanded role this season for New Orleans, and it was rewarded with an increase in points to 25, and over 23 minutes played per game on average. He will continue to be a crucial defenseman on the team.

Gabriel Johnson (@Gwdjohnson Steelhawks ) : Johnson had just about as good a S52 as S51, as he put up 34 points for Hamilton, playing once again a large role with them. He will look to have another strong IIHF campaign, like he did for Canada last season.

James Truong (@"James Truong" Blizzard ) : Truong once again appears in the squad, this time playing a defensive role on the team, like last tournament. His production has steadily improved season by season, as this season he topped his 27 point S51 campaign by putting up 14 goals and 34 points for Edmonton.

Commander Shepard (@LarksTongue Jets ) : Shepard is the other of two forwards who will play at a blueliner for Canada this tournament, and it is the third time he does so, having also played as a dman in the S49 and S51 tournaments. He had a great season for the Jets, scoring 22 goals and 45 points.

GOALIES

Nolan McMahon (@Reynolds Panthers ) : One of Canada's two new goalies in the squad this tournament, McMahon was acquired via assigned transfer from Switzerland this off-season. He played his rookie season for the Panthers this season, and did quite well, posting a 10-6-2 record in the 18 games he played, with a .906 save percentage, and a 2.92 goals against average.

Frans Eller (@Ace Kraken ) : The other of the two new Canada goalies, Eller was acquired via an unassigned transfer this off-season just about a week after McMahon. Still awaiting being drafted to the SHL, Eller played backup in Carolina last season, posting a .881 save percentage and 3.08 goals against average in the 12 games that he played, going 6-5-1.

MASCOT

Simon Leblanc (@Briedaqueduc Panthers ) : Leblanc does not make the squad because he is bad, but he is a huge motivational presence and as such he will be the official mascot for the team (not an actual roster spot)!

Canada will be aiming to set things right after a disappointing failure to medal in S51, and with they squad they are blessed with for this tournament, the gold medal is well within sight. Let us bring IIHF glory back to the home of hockey, shall we?
