The Detroit Falcons had an unbelievable draft with four picks in the first round including the first overall pick in the draft, Magnus Liljestrom, the fourth overall, Edward Williams, the eighth overall, Jack Kanoff, and the 14th, Reid Sutherland. the first (Frederick Wanesly), second (Zoltan Topalo), and third (Burlok Suflurgold) picks in the second round, and two in the third round (Toki Wartooth and A Jobin). All in all, the Falcons had one of the best draft classes out of any team in the SMJHL. It was a major party the night of the draft as all of the players and their families got together to celebrate the success of each of the members of the team. Some of the veteran guys were there to support their rookie teammates on their big night.
In talking with first overall pick Magnus Liljestrom, he said he could not be happier to be selected number one by the Winnipeg Jets. He's always dreamed of playing professional hockey in the SHL and now he is one step closer to realizing that dream. Expectations are that he will spend one more season at least with Detroit to hone his craft and work on some of the areas of his game that need to improve to be able to play at the next level. This offseason he said he plans on joining team mate Guy O'Shea at his training facility along with a few of the other players on the team as they try to see as much improvement as they can in the off season. Edward Williams, surrounded by his girlfriend and parents, was all smiles after going fourth in the draft to the Texas Renegades. He said he can't wait to get the call from Texas to tell him he is coming up to join the big club. He will be joining fellow Falcon Guy O'Shea who was drafted last season by Texas. A season or two more in Detroit and Texas will be looking for production out of there high pick. To be considered one of the four best players in the world in his draft class was something that was not lost on him. It was an exciting night for sure. Next up was Jack Kanoff who was eagerly waiting hearing his name get called. He ended up getting the call from the Toronto North Stars which was definitely one of the top teams he could have landed at in his mind. Being Canadian, it was really a goal for him to play professional hockey for one of the Canadian clubs. When Toronto called his name with the eighth pick, he could barely contain his excitement. He had a huge grin on his face the entire time on stage as he was putting the jersey on and taking photos with the leadership staff. He will be a core piece of their plans for the future and will deliver on those hopes. The last to be picked in the first round was Reid Sutherland. Winnipeg selected Reid with the 14th pick and was raving about the center's play making ability. They were looking for someone who could provide some passing to their top scorers and they hope that they've found it with Reid Sutherland. Reid was obviously excited. Getting to play hockey in a great hockey town like TWinnipeg is definitely exciting for him. When he had a chance to speak to the media, he was grateful for the opportunity and eager to get called up. Being drafted with his fellow team mate Liljestrom by Winnipeg is also a big plus for him In the second round, three of Detroit's other stars were drafted. First up was Frederick Wanesly who was drafted by Tampa Bay. Next up was The Zoltan, the man who is as religious as he is dangerous on the ice. Lastly Burlok Surflugold was selected in the second round as well. Overall having three more picks in the top two rounds is a real testament to Detroit's player development and scouting. Finally, keeper A Jobin and Toki Wartooth were selected in the third round. That rounded out a great night for Detroit and there will be renewed excitement on the club this year with so many top picks all playing on the same team. Hopes will be high that they can finish the job and win the championship.
