Whaler’s Moving up like George & Weezie

A few weeks ago the Vancouvers Whalers were in dire straits. The team had just 6 wins in 18 games, and then lost 6 consecutive games in a row including a few blow outs that had to be rough on everyone from veterans to rookies. Newcomer Markleesio Hopscotch, who joined the team in the middle of that streak, looked like he had been dropped into a trench in 1916 France. The team was doing so poorly they had less wins then expansion Quebec and had the second worst record in the entire league and looked much like the same club that only managed 11 wins in the 54 season.

But the team has shrugged that off recently winning 7 of their last 11 games. The 4 games they did lose were either 1 goal games or an empty netter away from being one. The whole team has contributed to some big wins from top to bottom. The first line, consisting of William Hartmann, Daniil Nikiforov, and Bryce McMahon, have led the way for the team and are turning on opponent’s red lights consistently. Goalkeeper Name Redacted, who has been the team’s shining light this season, has somehow stepped his game up to yet another level. But it hasn’t been just these four stars. The whole team is contributing from top to bottom. Defensive minded Dee Centerman IV finally put a puck in the net; linemates Jason Derouleaux and Devin Basher have put up more key second line points then they were earlier. Even the defense is contributing in the points department. Rookie Hopscotch has lost the thousand yard stare with 2 game winning goals and 5 points.

The team has climbed up to 9th place overall and if they keep up the effort should easily pass St. Louis for the 8th spot and put their eye on catching the midrange teams. Sure, two of their wins came against the bottom dwelling Battleborn, but they also had a convincing 5 to 2 win against current champion and second best record overall Krakens. The team has significantly closed the gap between goals for and goals against.  The home fans have a ton to cheer about as the team now has a winning record in Vancouver. The team, who was considered a punching bag last and early this season, has now become a challenge. While Anchorage and Kelowna probably do not need to be worried about being caught by Vancouver in the standings, neither team (they are currently separated by a single point for first place and the all important first round bye) wants to have to be the first one to play the Whalers.

The Whalers are moving on up. And with just 15 games in the season, they are a team to be watched.
