(WJC x2 media) WJC Team Canada's Roster's Greatest Individual Performances
#1

Everyone knows that hockey is a team sport. Individuals hardly ever decide a teams overall fate, it's the right combination of individuals all doing their jobs that'll make a winning or losing team. Although there are at times when an individuals performance does stand out. On the newly announced S56 Canadian WJC team (the team my players on, and the reason they are the subject) there are many great players, who have each had their own level of individual success throughout their short junior careers. So I'll be going through each player on the roster, looking through their entire SMJHL and WJC careers so far and picking out their to-date best individual performances. So without further ado lets begin with the goalies.

G - Damien Vertigo - @damienj10 - Kelowna Knights

11/25/2022 - Quebec City at Kelowna

Vertigo has been playing back up in Kelowna the last 2 seasons and this upcoming WJC will be his first appearance. In those 2 seasons he's played in 21 games with a 10 - 6 - 3 record. His best performance so far though just came in the S56 season in a game against the Quebec City Citadalles. In that game Quebec really put on the pressure shooting the puck on net 40 times, yet Vertigo made 38 saves in regulation and overtime and another 2 saves in a shootout to hold out for the Knights win. For those who don't want to do the math that's an impressive .950 SV%. Although Damien did earn a shutout in his S55 rookie season against the Nevada Battleborn, that came in a game where Kelowna only let 9 shots against, so not as impressive.

G - Phillip Weaver - @W19eaver - Nevada Battleborn

9/22/2022 - Kelowna at Nevada

Weaver is my very own player and he's spent his S55 rookie season has the starter for the new expansion team Nevada Battleborn before platooning the starting position in his S56 sophmore season, he was also back up goaltender for the S55 WJC Canadian team. In his career in Nevada he's played in 63 games with a 21 - 38 - 4 record, while playing 5 games and going 2 - 2 in his international career. Honestly I had a hard time choosing his top individual performance, not trying to brag (okay maybe a little) but Weaver's had quite a few impressive games, that being said theirs probably an equal if not more number of garbage performances by him. This past S56 season though in a game vs the Knights, Weaver would stand on his head with a .964 SV% making 54 saves, including 22 in the 1st period alone, plus 2 more in the shootout to give his team a 3 - 2 shootout win.

D - Kai Ichinose - @Gumbaman - Carolina Kraken

1/17/2023 - Carolina at Anaheim

Kai Ichinose was an undrafted defender who joined the league shortly before the S56 trade deadline and signed with the Carolina Kraken. He's only got to play in 14 games this season while averaging around 18 minutes of ice time a night. Kai's greatest individual performance so far in his very short career came against the Anaheim Outlaws. His team beat the Outlaws 6 - 2, while Ichinose came out strong that game earning a goal and an assist in the first 9 minutes of the game to give the Kraken a 2 - 0 lead. He would finish with a stat line of 1 goal, 1 assist, 1 SOG (impressive shooting % btw) and a +2 in only 15:40 minutes of icetime. Gumbaman is also a co-GM for this years WJC Canadian squad and will be expecting nothing short of platinum.

D - Wen Baters - @Waters - Detroit Falcons

1/12/2023 - Detroit at Quebec City

Wen Baters was drafted in the S56 SMJHL entry draft 2nd round, 22nd overall by the Anchorage Armada. Although he was then immediately traded to the Detroit Falcons, in a 3 team deal involving Carolina, Detroit and Quebec. Baters played in all 50 games for the Falcons this past season and finished with 7 goals and 17 points, while averaging over 19 minutes of icetime a game. His best performance came in a Falcons 5 - 2 win over the Quebec City Citadelles. He would star in game with an impressive 1 goal and 3 points. His final stat line would be 1 goal, 2 assists, +2, 3 SOG, 1 BS and 1 hit in 17:46 total ice time.

D - Nathan Thomas - @KaleSalad - Maine Timber

11/11/2022 - Detroit at Maine

Nathan Thomas was drafted on top of the 6th round in the S54 SMJHL entry draft, 51st overall, by the Maine Timber, and this will be his first WJC appearance. Thomas has really come into his own during his 3rd junior season, setting career highs in assists, points, shots, PIM, +/-, hits, takeaways and shots blocked. Overall he's played in 131 games with 17 goals and 28 assists for 45 points. His greatest individual performance so far has come in this past S56 season in a game against the Detroit Falcons. Maine would go down 3 - 0 in the first period but thanks to Nathan Thomas (and others, team sport and all) and 3 points Maine would go on to win 5 - 4 in a shootout. His final stat line would be 1 goal, 2 assists, +1, and 4 SOG in 22:46 total ice time.

D - Sarah Burke - @Kyamprac - Vancouver Whalers

1/28/2022 - St. Louis at Vancouver

Sarah Burke was the first pick in the 2nd round of the S55 SMJHL entry draft, 13th overall, by the Vancouver Whalers, and this will be her first WJC appearance. Burke just played on a very successful Whalers team that finished 1st in the league during the S56 season and Sarah played a big part in that logging ice time on the 2nd pairing. Burke has played in 100 games for the Whalers scoring 7 goals and 22 assists for 29 points. Burke was another one I had trouble picking a greatest individual performance, she is just such a great consistent team player. She reminds me of Dan Hamhuis when he played for the Nashville Predators and the Vancouver Canucks, was never flashy, didn't really notice him on the ice, but you sure as hell noticed when he wasn't on the ice. So since I have to pick 1, I'm going to go with a performance back in her rookie S55 season in a game against the St. Louis Scarecrows. She opened the scoring just 3 minutes into the game and then assisted on Vancouver's very next goal to give them a 2 - 0 lead early in the 1st, which lead to a 5 - 3 win for Vancouver. Sarah would finish the game with a final stat line of 1 goal, 1 assist, +1, 5 SOG and 2 hits in 15:58 total ice time.

D - Sachimo Zoidberg III - @Jala - Nevada Battleborn

12/20/2021 - St. Louis at Nevada

Sachimo Zoidberg III, the grandson of Calgary Dragon's hall of famer Sachimo Zoidberg, was a 4th round pick, 44th overall in the S55 SMJHL entry draft by the Nevada Battleborn, he also played on Canada's S55 Silver medal winning WJC team. SZ3 has played in 100 games for the Battleborn, scoring 10 goals and 26 assists for 36 points. His greatest individual performance also came back in his rookie season of S55 in a game against the Scarecrows. During a season which the Battleborn were historically bad (it was their inaugural season lay off already) SZ3 was definitely and shining bright spot as shown in the Battleborn 5 - 3 win over St. Louis. Not only did he assist on the games first and second goals, he also led both teams in shots blocked with 4, and total ice time. His final stat line would be 2 assists, 1 SOG, 4 BS, 2 hits and 2 takeaways in 23:47 total ice time.

D - Evangelos Giannopoulos - @JSS - Detroit Falcons

11/17/2021 - Detroit at Anaheim

Evangelos Giannopoulos was the Detroit Falcons first pick in the S55 SMJHL entry draft, 6th overall, this will be his first WJC appearance. In 100 games played for the Falcons, Giannopoulos has scored 6 goals and 24 assists for 30 points. His greatest individual performance was back in S55 when his Detroit Falcons blanked the Anaheim Outlaws 4 - 0. Giannopoulos would score his 1st goal of the season and post an absolutely dominating 100 DGR. His final stat line was 1 goal, +1, 2 SOG, 2 BS, 2 hits and 1 takeaway while leading the game in ice time with 23:10.

D - PBJ Souppan - @thevoicelesscreator - Newfoundland Berserkers

11/17/20222 - Newfoundland at St. Louis

PBJ Souppan was Newfoundland's 1st pick in the S53 SMJHL entry draft, 3rd overall, this will be his 3rd WJC appearance for team Canada. He's been in the SMJHL for 4 seasons now playing in 200 games while scoring 27 goals and 82 assists for 109 points. So far in his international career he has played in 24 games scoring 2 goals and 5 assists for 7 points. His greatest individual performance came during the S56 season in a game against the St. Louis Scarecrows. Newfoundland would go on to win a dominate 6 - 2 game where PBJ lit it up with 2 goals and an assist. His final stat line would be 2 goals, 1 assist, +3, 2 BS and 2 hits in 16:27 total icetime. It should also be noted he was being played as a winger that game instead of his natural defense position.

D - Axel Foley - @Mazatt - Carolina Kraken

11/29/2021 - Carolina at Detroit

Axel Foley joined the Kraken as a free agent late in the S53 season before being drafted by the Kraken in the 1st round, 10th overall, of the S54 SMJHL entry draft, this will be his 2nd WJC appearance. In his 3 and a bit seasons for the Kraken, Foley has gone on to play in 159 games while scoring 18 goals and 65 assists for 83 points. He would score 1 goal and 5 assists for 6 points in his lone WJC appearance. His greatest individual performance came back in the S55 season when his Carolina Kraken blew out the Detroit Falcons 7 - 1. In the game Foley would score the first goal in the game in just 1:53 into the game while also scoring another and assisting on another goal. His final stat line would be 2 goals, 1 assist, +3, 5 SOG and 1 takeaway in 22:35 total ice time.

C - Daedalus James - @littleb - Detroit Falcons

1/12/2023 - Detroit at Quebec City

Daedalus James was drafted near the bottom of the 3rd round of the S55 SMJHL entry draft by the Detroit Falcons, 34th overall, this will be his first WJC appearance. So far in his career he has played in 100 games for Detroit while scoring 12 goals and 14 assists for 26 points, with the majority of those coming in the S56 season. His greatest individual performance came just this last season in a 5 - 2 Detroit win over the Quebec City Citadelles. James would score back to back goals in the 2nd period while also adding an assist earlier in the game. His final stat line would be 2 goals, 1 assist, +3, 4 SOG and 4 hits in just 14:19 in total ice time.

W - Walter Burke - @lancedjack - Anaheim Outlaws

1/20/2023 - Anaheim at Maine

Walter Burke (could he be in relation with fellow teammate Sarah Burke?) came into the league as an undrafted free agent signing of the Anaheim Outlaws, this will be his first WJC appearance. So far in his career he as appeared in 91 games while scoring 12 goals and 22 assists for 34 points. His greatest individual performance happened in the S56 season in a game against the Maine Timber in which the Outlaws beat the Timber 4 - 3. Walter Burke would be named 1st star after scoring 2 goals back to back to tie the game for Anaheim. His final stat line would be 2 goals, 2 SOG and 2 Hits in only 13:57 total ice time.

W - Kev Kevens - @Keven - Quebec City Citadelles

2/9/2023 - Colorado at Quebec

Kev Kevens was selected by the Quebec City Citadelles late in the 6th round, 79th overall (although to be fair a bunch of teams passed before this pick), this will be his first WJC appearance. So far for Quebec City he's played in 100 games and scored 13 goals and 29 assists for 42 points. His greatest individual performance actually just came in the 1st round of the S56 SMJHL playoffs in game 5 of the Colorada/Quebec City match up. Quebec City would squeak out a 3 - 2 win mostly on the back of Kev Kevens who scored the 1st goal in the game just 39 seconds in while also scoring the game winner with just over a minute to go in the game. His final stat line would read 2 goals, +2, 4 SOG, 3 BS and 1 hit in 17:18 total ice time.

W - Alexis Vermette - @treant - Nevada Battleborn

11/14/2021 - Anaheim at Nevada

Alexis Vermette was a Nevada Battleborn 3rd round pick, 32nd overall, in the S55 SMJHL entry draft, this will be his first WJC appearance (after being the last cut last season). So far in his career for Nevada Alexis has played in 100 games and scored 18 goals and 24 assists for 42 points. His greatest individual performance came back in his rookie season S55, when his Nevada Battleborn beat the Anaheim Outlaws 5 - 3. Alexis would go on to score the eventual game winning goal while also picking up 2 assists. His final stat line would be 1 goal, 2 assists, +3, 2 SOG, 2 PIM and 1 hit in 16:40 total ice time.

C - Rock Strongo - @Leafs4ever - Nevada Battleborn

12/21/2021 - Colorado at Kelowna

Rock Strongo was the Colorado Raptors 1st round pick in the S55 SMJHL entry draft, 7th overall. He played for Colorado Raptors for a season and a half before being traded to the Nevada Battleborn in a blockbuster deal at the deadline, this will be his 2nd WJC appearance. So far in his career Rock has played in 101 games (81 for Colorado, 20 for Nevada) while scoring 21 goals and 36 assists for 57 points. In his international career he has played in 12 games and scored 3 assists. His greatest individual performance came during his rookie campaign when he was a Raptor. In Colorado's 7 - 3 win over the Kelowna Knights, Rock Strongo scored 1 goal while adding 2 assists. His final stat line would be 1 goal, 2 assists, +4 and 3 SOG in only 14:03 of ice time.

W - Guðmundur Kristjánsson - @Fluw - Colorado Raptors

11/3/2022 - Nevada at Colorada

Guðmundur Kristjánsson was Colorado's top pick in the S54 SMJHL entry draft, 5th overall, this will his 2nd WJC appearance. So far in 3 seasons for Colorado Guðmundur has played in 150 games while scoring 20 goals and 52 assists for 72 points. In his international career he has played in 12 games and scored 2 goals and 5 assists for 7 points. Now Guðmundur's greatest individual performance is a little bittersweet, its a helluva performance, but it also came during his teams 7 - 4 defeat to the Nevada Battleborn. The fact it happened in a loss I'm sure he feels differently about that game but came alive for an otherwise lifeless Raptors team that night. He would be a part of every goal the Raptors had scored, even bringing the game within 1 midway through the 3rd period with his 2nd goal of the game. His final stat line would be 2 goals, 2 assists, 2 SOG and 1 BS in 19:09 total ice time.

W - Jason Desreauleaux - @Gooney - Vancouver Whalers

10/11/2022 - Newfoundland at Vancouver

Jason Desreauleaux was drafted by the Vancouver Whalers in the S54 SMJHL entry draft, in the 4th round, 40th overall, this will be his 2nd WJC appearance. So far in his 4 seasons playing for the Vancouver Whalers, he's appeared in 163 games while scoring 44 goals and 32 assists for 76 points. In his international career so far he's played in 12 games and scored 2 goals. His best individual performance happened in a game this past season where his Vancouver Whalers shut out the Newfoundland Beserkers 6 - 0. During the game Jason exploded with a goal a period scoring his first career hattrick. His final stat line read 3 goals, +4 and 3 SOG in 17:46 total ice time.

W - Turg Turg - @ThisSeemsFishy - Anchorage Armada

1/8/2022 - Anchorage at St. Louis

Turg Turg was drafted with Anchorage's second 4th round pick, 38th overall, in the S54 SMJHL entry draft, this will be his 2nd WJC appearance. So far in his career for the Armada, Turg has played in 150 games while scoring 35 goals and 47 points for 82 points. In his international career he's played in 12 games and scored 2 goals and 4 assists for 6 points. His greatest individual performance came back in the S55 season when his Anchorage Armada shut out the Scarecrows 9 - 0. Turg Turg was a huge part of that offense that game scoring 2 goals and 2 assists. His final stat line would be 2 goals, 2 assists, +3, 1 BS and 3 hits in 16:02 total ice time.

W - Kyle Sutton - @CrazyMojito - Maine Timber

2/26/2022 - Anchorage at Maine

Kyle Sutton was drafted in the S53 SMJHL entry draft by the Maine Timber, in the 4th round, 37th overall, this will be his 3rd WJC appearance. In 4 seasons with the Timber, Kyle has put on quite the impressive career playing in 200 games while scoring 58 goals and 66 assists for 124 points. His international career has been pretty good as well so far playing in 24 games and scoring 4 goals and 8 assists for 12 points (majority of those points coming in last seasons WJC). Kyle was definitely another tough one to choose a greatest individual performance, he's had many great games both in the SMJHL and WJC. Although I'm going to go with game 6 of the S55 playoff matchup between Maine and Anchorage. It was during that playoffs which he won the Ronan O'Keefe award for being the playoff scoring champion. Although it was during that do or die game 6 against Anchorage, Kyle stepped up with 2 goals and 1 assist in the 5 - 4 overtime win for Maine. His final stat line read 2 goals, 1 assist, +2 and 3 Blocked shots in 19:46 total ice time.

W - Alex Marshall - @DonutDefender - Maine Timber

10/4/2021 - Anaheim at Maine

Alex Marshall was a S54 SMJHL entry draft 5th round pick, 41st overall, for the Maine Timber, this will be his 2nd WJC appearance. Alex has played 142 games over 3 seasons with the Timber, scoring 32 goals and 46 assists for 78 points. In his international career he has played in 12 games scoring 3 goals and 1 assist for 4 points. His greatest individual performance came during the 1st regular season game of the S55 season, when his Maine Timber beat the Anaheim Outlaws 6 - 2. Alex would go on to score the 1st and 2nd goals of the game in the 1st period while adding an assist later in the game. His final stat line was 2 goals, 1 assist, +1, 3 SOG, 2 PIM and 2 hits in 16:07 total ice time.

W - Devin Basher - @HanTheMan_ - Vancouver Whalers

1/12/2023 - Vancouver at Nevada

Devin Basher was drafted in the 2nd round of the S54 SMJHL entry draft by the Vancouver Whalers, 12th overall, this will be his 2nd WJC appearance. Since joining the Whalers Devin's played in 163 games while scoring 19 goals and 47 assists for 66 points. In his international career so far he has played in 12 games and scored 1 goal and 2 assists for 3 points. His greatest individual performance came just recently near the end of the S56 season in a game where his Whalers beat the Nevada Battleborn 5 - 1. Devin would go on to score back to back goals in the 3rd period to put the game out of reach while also adding an assist earlier in the game. His final stat line was 2 goals, 1 assist, +2, 3 SOG, 1 BS, 2 PIM and 2 hits in only 13:17 total ice time.

W - Rotticus Scott - @"RotticusScott" - Vancouver Whalers

10/28/2020 - Maine at Anchorage

Rotticus Scott was a S53 3rd round pick, 24th overall, by the Kelowna Knights, this will be his 3rd WJC appearance. Rotticus would go on to play 3 seasons in Kelowna before being traded to Vancouver just before the S56 season. In the 4 seasons in the SMJHL he was played in 198 games and scored 35 goals and 81 assists for 116 points. Rotticus would go on to score the first goal of the game and then later add 4 assists. His final stat line for the game read 1 goal, 4 assists, +1, 5 SOG and 1 hit while playing 18:29 in total ice time. RotticusScott is also the other co-GM for team Canada this year.

Blush Not to be annoying or anything but I noticed you only counted the S55 round robin for my international stats! If you total the season before, and the medal rounds internationally I am at 28 GP 6 G , 16 A and 22 Pts.
