Today we’re going to be looking at the Vancouver Whalers season in review, we’ll be looking specifically at how each part of the season went down from start, to middle and end. To start us off, we should all know that currently the Vancouver Wahlers are facing off against the Newfoundland Berserkers, in which they are favoured to win.
Vancouver started their season relatively well going 6-4-0 in their first ten games, which turned out to be a microcosm of their entire season really. The entire team came together to help and produce points for their squad to help them land a playoff spot. During the middle of the season the Whalers as a team started to brush off some of that rustiness that they experienced in those crucial first ten games or so, in which they won a large majority of their games. Players like Daniil Nikiforov and Rotticus Scott were some of the few players who led the team in scoring during this time, but not by a lot. Nikforov was their best player and leader by far, putting up an impressive 23 goals, 31 assists, totalling out at 54 points on the season - this put him very close to the top scoring title in the entire SMJHL. Scott wasn’t too far behind, but was more even with the other Vancouver forwards, putting up 14 goals. 25 assists for a total of 39 points on the season. Vancouver also was able to get above average goaltending and solid defence, helping to make them one of the best well rounded teams in the SMJHL. Jon St. Ark, who is currently touted to being one of the best goaltender prospects in the SMJHL was able to put up an impressive 19 - 4 record on the season playing sheltered minutes to prepare them for the playoffs. St. Ark managed to hold a .930 save percentage, best in the entire league with a minimum of 15 games played on the season, arguably making them the best goaltender in the SMJHL. More interestingly, St. Ark had an incredible goals against average of 1.62, the next closest in the entire league being fellow Vancouver goaltender Name Redacted with a 2.25. Quebec’s Tyler Ward came next closest with 2.28, which just goes to show how dominant Vancouver's goaltending was this season. Towards the ending part of the Season 56 SMJHL regular season, the Whalers had all but confirmed their spot in the playoffs by dominating the western conference, handedly locking down their 1st place spot in the conference and the league with an impressive record of 39 - 11 - 0, with a league leading point percentage of .780. For reference the next closest team was at .640, which just goes to show how dominant they were as a team in season 56. Now the Whalers are in the playoffs, and are looking to lock up another Four Star Cup to help cap off one of the strongest individual regular seasons we’ve seen in a while. If there was any team to do it, it’d be Newfoundland, but it’s certainly going to be an uphill battle for them.
