Draft Day – The Landon Fischermann Story

It was Sunday morning for me. The excitement building of where I would be selected and what the beginning of my SMJHL career would be. Relatively unknown around the league, I knew it was going to be difficult to make a name for myself. However, with the numbers that I put up during the Prospect Showcase, I thought maybe some people would take notice.

For those that didn’t follow the showcase, during the 40-game regular season, I was able to post 30 points (7-23=30), tied for the most among defensemen. The 23 assists also ranked tied for third overall. Not only was I putting up points, but I was depended on defensively as well. The 22:37 average time on ice per game was third most in the league, and even with all that time on ice, still posting a plus-12 rating. Obviously, I knew my goal total was down, but that isn’t my game. I want to be a distributor, setting up the goals. I don’t need to be the ones putting them in. Passing, speed and defensive responsibility is the name of the game for me.

Following the regular season, my numbers didn’t dip in the playoffs. Helping the San Diego Lions to the #1 overall seed, we dispatched the Mexico City Aztecs in three games, before falling in game three to the Tokyo Yoshi’s in the finals. Over those six games, I registered five assists, second most in the league, and my five points was tied for third in the league and second amongst defensemen. I also ranked second overall in plus/minus (plus-5) and average time on ice per game (22:24).

So, all in all, I don’t think the showcase could have gone any better for me. I was definitely confident heading into the draft that I would be at least relatively highly sought after. However, I knew I was only scouted by a few teams. Then the draft began, as did the waiting. I saw Right Defenseman after Right Defenseman be taken. I have to be honest that the motivation to prove everyone wrong built with every team that passed on me. Overall, seven Right Defenseman were taken before me. Until finally, in the third round (35th overall) with their second pick of the draft, the Vancouver Whalers finally called my name.

Now, while I was frustrated that I fell so far, I couldn’t have been happier where I landed. Getting the immediate invite into the Locker Room, it has been a non-stop chatter fest. We are all coming together very well, and I think we will make a big jump this season compared to where last season ended. We will not be happy with a second-round exit. This year, we are going to push hard to go all the way. Obviously, it won’t be easy, but I can tell you one thing, when the Whalers decided to select me, they got someone who is motivated to prove the other 11 teams wrong.

Time will tell on just how far Vancouver can go, but the on thing I can tell you is that they have acquired a defenseman who has extremely high aspirations for himself and for his career. The sky is the limit, and I hope that SHL teams are watching and that the draft next season into that league will not be met with nearly as long of a wait. Until next time, this has been Landon Fischermann, signing out. Go Whalers!!!
