Ignaz Pleyel - Scouting Report for S62 Draft Class

(This post was last modified: 08-17-2021, 10:41 PM by VillageBC.)

Name: Ignaz Pleyel
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 220lbs
Position: LW
Shoots: Right

Background & Style of Play

Ignaz didn’t come from a family with money who could afford hockey training camps or even play rep level. He wasn’t identified early and in fact didn’t get noticed until relatively late at a rec hockey tournament. The fact there was a scout even at the tournament is lucky as they were only there to watch their own kid. But his tenacity, drive and willingness to take punishment got him noticed. Since then, and a few call-ups to better teams that he was able to showcase himself with, has at least gotten him a seat at the prospect table, even if it is at the back of the room.

Ignaz Pleyel's style of play harkens back to an older and rougher style. He enjoys going to the dirty areas in front of the net and fighting for those tips and rebounds. While he generally won't drive play himself, he creates open space for his teammates by dragging defenders to the net with him. Where he sits happily taking a beating to collect the garbage that gets left in the crease.

Offense

He has an uncanny ability to find himself some space by the net and with a decently accurate shot can easily capitalize at the distances he is from the net. He won't fly down the wing and snipe you many that way. But he makes up for some of that by being able to stick handle in tight and jockeying for position in the crease. If you ignore him and you’ll get punished and if you engage him space is opening up for his team.

Defense

He's pretty average across the board here. With no glaring weaknesses but no outstanding strengths either. Though he's got a decent stick for checking he would probably benefit from picking an area to really excel at and lean into it to make him stand out. He’s brave to a fault and happy to use his body to block shots but his timing of when to go down needs work. Telegraphing his blocks a bit too much allows the gifted defenseman to get an open lane to shoot or skate into a more threatening position. Otherwise, not much here to write home about.

Skating

His balance on skates is excellent, which he gets plenty of practice at as defenders try to move him out of the way. The fact he’s 6’4” and 220lbs also helps in holding his position. He's surprisingly agile as a big guy as well, able to move around players effectively and avoid checks with ease. Unfortunately though, while his acceleration is okay, he's not that fleet of foot and getting back up the ice after being in front of the opponent's crease can take longer than you would like. It's an area he'll need to improve on if he wants to make it to the big clubs.

Projection

Without the wheels some of the high end prospects have and only being an average defensive player. Ignaz Pleyel will likely struggle to find his footing in the SMJL unless the team already has weapons in place to take advantage of his style. But his willingness to go to battle in the hard areas will make him a fan favourite. While he hasn’t had a lot of opportunities, when he has gotten them he’s shown the ability to elevate his play to that level. At the high end you're looking at a potential Ryan Smyth or Tomas Holmstrom type of player. The kind of player that generally excels in tougher playoff hockey but may underwhelm during the regular season.
