And here we go again, the season 64 of the Simulation Hockey League is under way, as the inevitable and eternal offseason is finally over. The Calgary Dragons are looking a bit stronger this season than the last season, after acquiring Jon Forty-One and Artemius Nyström to their wing to recover from losing Videl Valor to the Edmonton Blizzards. No introductions needed as we head into the first game of the preseason
- As the Dragons step into the game as underdogs, they start off quite strong. Barry Batsbak is able to net the first goal of the game right behing the Baltimore goalie Luca Del Vecchio. In the first 10 minutes the Dragons give Platoon no slack as they are able to only get 2 shots on goal, but the vising team do overcome their issues on the opposite end of the ice, and manage to get more grip of the game towards the end of the period. No more goals are seen here, and the Dragons go into the second period with a wobbly 1-0 lead. Second period, and the Dragons start off exactly as in the first period. Firm shot by A-Rye Izzy is blocked by Adam Barron, but Esa Parmborg regains possession, quickly passes it to Barry Batsbak who then proceeds to give the puck on forward to Artemius Nyström, who scores it for the Dragons - and its his first for his new team. Next few minutes go by real fast, as both teams are having troubles setting up their attacks. After that first goal in the second period, very little action is seen. Right after the halfway mark of the second period, the Baltimore Platoon do wake up again and gain more possession over the Calgary side. The Dragons get a firm chance towards the last minutes of the period as Duncan Mackenzie has a brilliant chance to make it 3-0, but Del Vecchio manages to make up the first save. The rebound is given to Grogu Mandosson, who shoots it very quickly trying to surpass the Platoon goaltender, but Del Vecchio's quick reflexes stop that from happening. Second period over, and the score stands 2-0 for the Calgary Dragons. A relative lead, but not the greatest as we still have one period of hockey to be played. As we begin the third period, Baltimore Platoon shock the Dragons immediately with a chaser. Ethan Duncan is able to win the faceoff, which launches an immediate rush towards the Dragons net. Few quick passes to Daniil Nikiforov, followed up by one to Noel Blanchet, and the Dragons goaltender Zhen Rosa has no chance against the pace that the Platoon are able to put up within the very first seconds of the third period. With the goal the Baltimore Platoon do have more control over the game, and the Dragons are in shock and unable to leave their own premises. The pressure that the Platoon are giving them is just too much, and a turnover by the Dragons open up a brilliant opportunity for them. The Platoon trio (Duncan, Nikiforov, Blanchet) is back at it again doing what they do best, and Blanchet's shot is just too much for Zhen Rosa, as they tie the game 2-2 in just 3 minutes. The Dragons are in shambles, they lost their lead in just 3 minutes, and cant seem to get a grip of themselves again. Platoon's first line trio do make it 3-2 with just 5 minutes played into the third period, Blanchet completes his hattrick after a failed clear attempt by Brennan Kennedy Jr. Assisted by none other than Nikiforov and Duncan. Some players might fall into slumber being down 2 goals heading into third period but this trio shows up that you should never give up hope. As the Dragons try to maintain their manageable one goal deficit, a spark is lit. Grogu Mandosson first checks the puck out from Lord Raiden, which rolls down to Richard LaFleur, whose quick shot is deflected into the back of the net by none other than Mandosson himself, to complete his heroic shift, and the game is tied again at 3. 5 minutes left into the game, and both teams cannot create proper opportunities to win the game during the third period, and we head into overtime. During overtime, both teams maintain possession as much as they can. The first and only proper chance during the overtime was created by Daniil Nikiforov, whose highly accurate shot was barely saved by Zhen Roza. In the last minute, Luukas Lilja manages to get Dragons' first shot on goal during overtime but that pathetic attempt wont catch Del Vecchio off-guard - and we solve this confrontation with penalties - where the Dragons pick up the longer straw as they bank 3 goals behind Platoon netminder Del Vecchio - Dragons win 4-3 after penalties. - No watcher was able to attend the game, Barracuda finish off Dragons very cleanly, 5-2. - Calgary Dragons do bounce back after their loss against Tampa Bay, and wreck down the Hamilton Steelhawks 7-1. Their solid offense was led by Barry Batsback, who gained himself a hattrick in the second period, in just a bit over 3 minutes. 871 words, excluding icons |
