The Great Falls Grizzlies have had a pretty successful regular season in which they vied for 1st in the league. While that didn’t translate totally into the post season, in which the only made it to the second round. Today we will be taking a look at the three rookies who came in, integrated with the team and helped the team do so well.

Despite a fair bit of separation in where they were drafted and how they were deployed, all three rookies did very similarly when it comes to points. All three had respectable rookie seasons with Ackerson and Latreille narrowly beat Schattenaxt by one point. Ackerson was deployed defensively, Schattenaxt mostly offensively and Latreille was mostly just at even strength.

Ackerson is perhaps the only surprise when it comes to points, with his deployment as a defensive forward, with several minutes less than his compatriots and with almost zero power play time, you’d expect for him to have far less points but he kept up by being extra helpful to those around him, leading the three with 33 assists. He’s going to have to keep being extra helpful because unfortunately for him and his point totals, he’s almost assuredly going to be stapled to defensive duties and the penalty kill. He can see shades of it with his deployment this season, as he saw the most short handed time of the three.

Latreille was the best goal scorer of the group and without a shred of PP time to help him; he scored 14 goals over the regular season, cementing himself as a future star in the making. Not surprising but testimate to him and his line superb play, he also had the highest plus/minus of the three with a fantastic +29. He might be a little too focused on the goal scoring for now but we will see how he shapes out. Nobody ever got mad about a player scoring too many goals.

This is not to say that Schattenaxt had a bad season at all, with 9 goals and 29 assists, he was a solid provider of points for the team. He also laid the body, a lot. Crashing and bashing his way through the season and being solidly top five in the LEAGE in hits with 217. He’s an all rounder prospect and looks to continue to improve on that as he moves forward. The real only surprise is that he didn’t score more points, as he had the majority of the power-play time out of the three but that kind of improvement will come with time and experience. If he continues to get the time, he’s only to get better on the power play.

There is a bright future in store for all three for sure as long as they continue to put in the work. I'd say that the Grizzlies came out of the S70 draft with some of the best picks in the draft.
