Over the past 10 seasons, one thing has been abundantly clear: The Js scouts tend to overlook some absolute gems. In this deep dive, I’ll be dissecting the absolute value that a late 3rd round pick can offer.

Starting us off, with the 38th pick of the S61 draft is GFG Goalie, Brick Wall. Still active to this day, Brick Wall is holding down the fort in the SHL. After being starting goalie for the Grizzlies for 4 seasons, Brick was drafted in the first round by the Montreal Patriotes, who still hold his contract to this day. As of the most recent update, he is sitting at 2024 TPE, making him nothing less than the foundation of Montreal’s roster.

With the 38th pick in the S62 J draft, the Nevada Battleborn select CJ Broussard. Honestly, this is a pick that really doesn’t move the needle on the radar. After the draft, CJ did a total of two updates, lived a life of obscurity and abruptly retired. In his own words, he forgot he existed.

In a thread posted by former #38 Brick Wall, in the S63 draft, the Kelowna Knights opted to pass on their pick. To be fair, this was absolutely the right call. The only players picked after this were immediate inactives that never did a single update. Many never even made an update thread.

In the S64 draft, with the 38th pick, the Kelowna Knights select Tommy Westbrook. Westbrook remained active and is still playing today. He was drafted in the S65 SHL draft 9th overall by the Hamilton Steelhawks where he still plays today. He is somewhat inconsistent at updating but has 1184 TPE as of last update.

In the s65 draft, the Nevada Battleborn select Luigi Ferraro. Luigi was no Super Mario, he immediately got red shelled and went IA before getting a single TPE assigned to his build.

In the S66 draft, the Colorado Raptors select Max Hoshi. Again, this is one of those picks that didn”t pan out. Max currently sits sub 300tpe as inactive.

In the s67 draft, the Quebec City Citadelles select PK Subban. The trend continues, no update in his update thread, utter confusion on his build, absolute nightmare scenario for the guy.

In the s68 draft, with the 38th pick Detroit selects Tobias Wrexks. Now, this is one of those picks that has an expiration date. Tobias is still on the roster for Detroit and is still contending as a top player for the squad. Unfortunately he is inactive and is aging out of the league this offseason. He was drafted by the Texas Renegades 54th overall for the SHL draft, but he likely won’t sniff a league game for them.

In the S69 (nice) draft, Quebec City drafts Smurfunkel Dothe. Dothe is still playing for Quebec City, but was drafted to the SHL 24th overall by the Toronto North Stars. He is over 500tpe as of current, so he will be in the SHL sooner than later.

This brings us to the last season of eligibility prior to the current class. In the S70 draft, the Maine Timber select Merle Van Nistelrooy. As of an update a couple of weeks ago, Merle is sitting at 260ish TPE, just a few points above the most recent #38, Billy Hill. Merle was drafted to the SHL to the Texas Renegades at 50th overall which certainly reflects the amount of effort he put into character development.
