Gunther: Hello SMJHL media, welcome to SHockS, the Simulation Hockey Show, name work in progress. I am your host Gunther Daniels, alongside my co-hosts, Tam Perring and Max Teeps.
We’re really hoping this show doesn’t get canceled after one episode like so many other media but who knows. Our first topic is on, what a surprise, the player of the person who’s making this media
Tam: Are we supposed to be aware that we’re not real?
Max: That’s right guys were talking about 61st overall SMJHL pick, Leo Roze.
Born in Jelgava, Latvia, Leo Roze is a towering defenseman entering the SMJHL this year. He has grown up playing in the Latvian Junior leagues and made a huge name for himself with his towering size and defensive prowess. While that was enough to get him on the radar it wasn’t enough to put his draft stock high.
Gunther: For sure Max, but you have to ask, are we sure he can make it in the J? He really doesn’t have much going for him besides his height and some defensive skill, he put up almost no points in a much weaker league of the Latvian Juniors
Tam: I feel like we’re glossing over the fact that we’re not real guys? Hello? Can we talk about that?
Max: Well Gunther, our specialist Ray Porter is down with Roze right now, let’s see what they have to say
Ray: Hey Leo, how’s your day going
Leo: Good, good, just settling in to new home and everything and skating a bit at Quebec ice.
Ray: Let’s start on your backstory, when did you know hockey was your thing?
Leo: Well, i skated since I was young, and you know my dad was agent for SHL players so he love hockey as well. When I met old SHL players and they taught me my love of the game really went up
Ray: What’re your thoughts on QCC? Did you expect to go there?
Leo: Quebec is very nice. Another new language to learn but beside that very nice. The people around show very much support and I hope I can stay here awhile. My teammates are very supportive and it’s definitely an interesting group that is coming in, with the twins and my Latvian d partner, I think if our class stick together we could win a cup or two.
Ray: How does it feel getting picked so late in the draft?
Leo: Well you know, it is a super steep draft class with many great players to the J, I was surprised to see myself drop so low and I’ll try to make my name in the J so that SHL teams can see my actual talent and pick me earlier.
Ray: Do you have any reason why you think you went this low?
Leo: Ah well, I do not talk to many other rookies this year so maybe my lack of talk caused it. I do not know. Maybe people do not trust Denisova to train me to be too defenseman because he never really play more than the third line but really I do not mind going so low to Quebec. I get to play with my Latvian brother now too and I think this could be very good for Latvia national team.
Ray: Speaking of Latvian national team, what’re your thoughts on them and their performances?
Leo: Been a couple years now I watch and feel like Latvia is so close to something special but we come up short. I’m hoping to help change that and I think our class could really be the one to go on to the national team and bring home some medals. I focus on the J right now however, making my name and getting attention from teams in SHL.
Ray: Are there any other comments you wish to make
Leo: Yes just one, I didn’t know how expensive this place would be, I feel like I’m spending almost 500k a week! Who can sustain that
Ray: haha Leo, just you wait till you hit the SHL!
Leo: What? What do you mean? I’ll need to pay more weekly?
