Welcome to 50 on 50 with your host Barbra Smith. Today we are looking into the life and times of SHL pro hockey player Edžus Ozolins. Barbra is an award winning reporter who has helped crack many top articles, worked with the greatest titans of industry, and spoken to many Ivy League Universities and Colleges around the globe. In this series Barbra focuses in on the success and failures in the lives of many stars and how they have managed to climb their way to the top or are on the rise. This week we are looking into Edžus Ozolins, as we look into his humble beginnings in his hometown of Riga, Latvia. His dedication to his craft. What his family and friends think. How he has done so far and what his future holds within the SHL. With that we go to Barbra… BS: Welcome everyone to 50 on 50. I am Barbra Smith, I know you all must know of me, but what you may not know is Edžus Ozolins. A young up and comer from the Simulation Hockey League. This young star is part of the current future for the Los Angeles Panthers. Last season was his rookie season and he put together an impressive rookie campaign with 21 goals, 21 assists in 66 games! We can read all the stats we want and listen to interviews from the locker room, but to really get to know this player we here at 50 on 50 decided to go back to where it all began for Edžus and took the long, exhausting 15 hour flight to his small village in the middle of western Asia. Narrator: So, Barbra and the team went to the bustling City of Riga, the capital city of Latvia and home to 600,000+ people. BS: We have arrived here at this tiny primitive town to investigate the humble beginning of Edžus Ozolins. We will start by speaking with his family, I have met them in their small dirt hut in the outskirts of the village. Here we have his Father and Mother. H-E-L-L-O, I c-o-m-e f-r-o-m a-m-e-r-i-c-a. You know lots of money and e-n-g-l-i-s-h… I a-m H-e-r-e to s-p-e-a-k to y-o-u a-b-o-u-t y-o-u-r s-o-n. Ozolins Senior: Hello Barbra, we speak English just fine thank you. BS: God damn it, we need a translator, I can’t understand the mumble jumble these Chinese speak. Ozolins Senior: How about I just start, ever since a young age. You see he was always a physically gifted youngster. Big, strong, much like a horse. Ms. Ozolins: Yes our son was so big we figured he would one day take his natural talents and become a global star. BS: Interesting, so from a young age you knew he would be famous. What was he like growing up? What separated him from the other children his age? Ms. Ozolins: He was always working at his craft. Whenever he wasn’t in his room he was very committed to family and those closest. He cared so much about all of us. Ozolins Senior: Yes he was a very passionate person when it came to becoming a star, every minute of the day he was hard at work. We heard him grunting and pushing himself to the limits as he tried to get better and better at his craft. His door was always closed so we respected his privacy as he dedicated himself to improving. BS: So you must have been overjoyed when he was selected to come to North America to become a junior hockey player. Ms. Ozolins: What…NO! That was sad day for us. Ozolins Senior: Yes it was quite upsetting, we thought he would have done much better and become much bigger star than a hockey player in America. NARATOR: With this shocking turn of events Barbra Smith went deeper into his past and worked her way into his old school to speak with a few of his old teachers. BS: Here we find Edžus Ozolins old school. This building is a small location, they have a single classroom where all the children of all ages gather to hear daily lessons of the bush magic and superstitions. Teacher: Oh I think you are mistaken, we teach everything you learn in America, science, math, language arts, in fact our schooling system is a head of yours in many respects and this is just one classroom, we have a building with 20 rooms for elementary school with class sizes of 15 or 20 children to really encourage a healthy learning environment. BS: So sad, *pulls out lighter* look fire, oooooh, you can keep it. Teacher: …thanks… Anyway, even here at school we could see Edžus was different than most other students, he was…gifted, you know physically. You know gym uniforms wouldn’t quite fit him right. He was just so much bigger than others. And his charisma was off the charts! He was the guy that would just go far in anything he wanted to do. He just needed to apply himself… NARRATOR: With that Barbra ran into a few of his old friends. BS: Here is some America chocolate, yum yum good. Now for the Chocolate I need you to speak about Edžus Ozolins. What do you remember about him. Klaud Svensson: I was so sure he would become the greatest, you know what I mean. Between the natural charisma and his size, he just had everything going for him! The man was a monster, he could get anything he wanted and would have been nearly a king here in Latvia, if he just stayed the course. Yevon Bakus: Yeah, he was such a great guy. We were all rooting for him and his future. We were all jealous of him…but now…I don’t know, I feel like it was all just a waste. NARRATOR: What could have caused his friends, family, teachers to feel disappointed in his life choices, why would they consider a future SHL star and up and coming international star to earn disappointment from his family and friends? BS: If not a hockey player, what did you think he was going to be? Ozolins Senior: A porn star. Teacher: Porn Klaud and Yevon: Big Porn Star, like huge. Ms. Ozolins: If only he had become a Porn Star, he would have been living up to his expectations and god given talent…*crying* BS: REALLY! Porn star, over hockey player, you wanted him to become a porn star? Ms. Ozolins: Yes it is true, I mean we love him no matter what, but he could have been biggest Latvian Star if he just stuck to his early training. Just look at this picture we hang in our living room. There are so many hockey players from Latvia, he unfortunately will never stand out, sure he will have a good life and make good money. But Porn Star, there is so very few of those from Latvia, and look at him, he was going to make it big, and never have to worry about a thing for the rest of his life. Ozolins Senior: I will always spend the rest of my life wondering what if he was able to take that next step and really get into the league. He could have toured the world, made money doing what he was made to do. Would have been great…but now…I just don’t know. I guess I am happy he is doing something over there, but we will never see his games here. If he was in porn we could have watched all his movies, would have been great to see my boy preform…*sigh* Teacher: He lost out on an opportunity to become the most famous person from this school, now he is maybe 5th most famous, somewhere between Olympic Gold Medalist Dainis Kula and man the police can never find or catch for numerous murders and crimes Klaud Svensson. Klaud Svensson: If only he really applied himself and went for it, sad day here in Riga when he left for America and gave up on the golden path. BS: Well, there you have it folks, a once great hope for the entire tiny nation somewhere in China, falls short to live out his dream of a talented third liner in Los Angeles. Failing on the hopes and dreams of his family, friends as he settled for mediocrity giving up on his god given talent. Until Next time this is Barbra Smith with 50 on 50 signing off. Sig by Lazyeye
