Hailing from the Highlands of Scotland, Daryl Urquhart was not drafted into the SMJHL. Due to some ‘visa issues’, he joined his first team as a waiver wire pickup, 6 games into Season 57. Daryl definitely had what could be considered a successful career, winning back to back Challenge Cups (we will get there….), but ha never really stood out for his individual play. The kind of player who was comfortable up or down the defensive lineup, I think reliable is a good word for him. You could slot him in on your 3rd pair with a rookie and could depend on him to provide the extra cover for the mistakes a rookie will ultimately make. Or he could be the defensive foil to a more attacking defensive player, making sure the gaps behind are plugged. Even as a more mobile partner to an aging franchise legend like, say, Cassius Darrow. Jack of all trades, master of none? Perhaps.
Coming into St Louis, he stepped in on the 3rd pair alongside Jimmy Dekens, who would be in his last season with the team. Urquhart put up 15 Pts (4G, 11A) in his 60 games played as a J rookie. The Scarecrows didn’t have the best of seasons, going 25-36-5 and finishing 3rd in their division. Being pre-expansion, they still qualified for the Playoffs and looked to be easy 1st round whipping boys for the much more impressive Kelowna, coming off a 37-25-4 regular season. The Scarecrows eked out a Game 7 win, sending the locker room into pandemonium. They got routed in 4 by eventual 4-Star Cup winners Anchorage in the next round, but the team was happy to have carved out that win in the first round! Daryl played a further 3 season in the J for St Louis, Finishing with 87 Points (25G, 62 A) from 258 regular season games. In S59, Urquhart won the only individual award he would ever get, the Vyacheslav Onoprienko Trophy for SMJHL Most Underrated Player. He was also a part of Great Britain’s S60 WJC gold medal winning team. Urquhart was drafted by the Seattle Argonauts at 23rd overall in the S58 SHL Draft. This came as a surprise to many, not least the player himself, as he had not exactly put up stellar numbers as a rookie in the J. He made the step up to the big leagues in S61, taking his place on the Argonauts 3rd pair, alongside Ren-Ekelemchi Shimizu-Okoli, who was himself just in his second SHL Season. 14 Pts as a rookie wasn’t an awful haul, but was nothing to write home about, then followed it up with 18 Pts as a sophomore. S63 saw a step change, however. A change in personnel saw him still on the 3rd pair, but now with veteran D-Man Oliver Cleary. Urquhart put up 35 Pts (8G, 27A) with Murphy as the only defenseman ahead of him. He continued in the mid to high 30s for the next 2 seasons before something (it was the sim change) cratered his production. The back to back Cup winning seasons (67/68) saw a return to decent production, with 24 and 32 Pts respectively, but he never saw the heights of S63-65 again. He wore an ‘A’ on his jersey for a few seasons, including for their first Cup win, which was one of the things he was proudest of across his whole career. He relinquished it, following the management change between Cup wins, but always felt blessed for his time as an Alternate Captain.
