The Sixth Pick 21 Seasons Later
Looking back at S54 SMJHL draft it has one similarity to the S75 SMJHL draft, and that is the sixth pick. In S54 the sixth pick was Theo Kondos, and in S75 it was Stavros Kondos. Heading into the SMJHL draft Stavros was not expected to be drafted in the first round, many had him mocked as a mid to late second round pick. While fair, as not much is known about Stavros since he is coming from overseas it is hard to ignore the connect to Theo Kondos who is expected enter the SHL Hall of Fame when his career is over. Theo helped lead his junior team the Armada to a four star cup, and we can expect that many in Regina are hoping Stavros can do the same for his team. Stavros is joining a strong Regina Elk team that features many top tier players who look to take a big step forward this season. Kondos will be on the only rookie on the offensive side of the puck for the Elk. Kondos will benefit playing with some veteran Elk players who can help him adapt to the SMJHL game. As Kondos said pre draft, he has high mental skills to think the game, but he has a long way to go on working on his shooting and passing, at this moment we are not sure what to expect out of the rookie. Will he be a passer, will he take the role of a shooter or simply just a solid all around two player.
