SHL75: #3: Ron Mexico
#1

Ron Mexico
@mexico.27

If we showed you all of his awards, it will shock you that he isn't #1 on the list. Ron Mexico was the best player in the SHL for a long time. Make the last in S10, S20, S30, S40, S50 he might as well been #1. But as time moves on, players cement themselves as being one of the best. Ron Mexico is always certainly in that conversation. With 2 of our awards committee voting him as #1. The only other player outside of the top 2 that had #1 vote. And for the right reason. So let's take a dive into his career.

As one of the OG Season 1 draft players. Ron Mexico had the distinction of getting drafted in the 6th round, #34th OA to the Hamilton Steelhawks. However, he would not stay there long. In one of the earliest trades, the 4th trade in league history. Mexico was traded to the Winnipeg Jets.

The move saw Castiel Lee and Ron Mexico go to the Jets, where the Steelhawks in return got Harvey Singh and Pekka Jarmuth. So in S1, Mexico played 31 games with the Steelahawks, and 11 with the Jets. The move worked out well for Mexico. Winning the first ever Challenge Cup with the Winnipeg Jets. Putting his name on the first Cup Winners. Statistically however, Mexico did not have a great first season. Only putting up 9 points in 40 games played.  S2 saw Mexico get better however, putting up 22 points in 39 games. Still a far ways from the player we know and love today. Those 22 points were only good for 23rdt in the league in points, out of 114 players. So putting up good numbers, but not even close to the top yet.

S3 would quickly put an end to that however. With 19 goals, 28 assists for 47 points in 40 games played. Ron Mexico broke out for the first time in his career. Leading the league in points by a wide margin(47 to 40). Ron Mexico won his first Ron Mexico of his career. Winning the Khan(players MVP), and the Karpotsov Award for leading the league in points.

S4 he regressed a bit. Scoring 13 goals, 19 assists for 32 points in 40 games played. Tied for 6th in the league in points. Mexico was nominated for Mexico again, however he did not win it. But a B2B Mexico nomination was nothing to scoff at.

S5 was one of the best seasons for Ron Mexico. He was the first player EVER to reach the 50 point mark in the SHL. Scoring 24 goals, 26 assists for 50 points that season. Leading the league in goals and points. He won all the awards again. Winning the McDonald for most goals, Karpotsov for most points, and the Mexico and Khan for the committee’s and players MVP of the season.

S6 he would do it again. In this experimental season of the SHL. They now played 60 games. With that, Mexico continued to dominate. Scoring 28 goals, 41 assists for 69 points in those 60 games. Tying Jeff Dar and Kain Webb for most points. All 3 won the McDonald for most goals for the season. He however, was at the top in points, winning the Karpotsov for the 3rd time in his career. He also won his 2nd Ron Mexico award. And his 3rd continuous nomination.

S7, and the league back down to 50 games played. Mexico still was as dominant as ever. Scoring 14 goals, 37 assists for 51 points. He did not lead the league in points this season, but he was tied for 3rd most points in the league along with John Falkirk. For another amazing season, Ron Mexico was nominated for another Ron Mexico award. On Top of that, The Jets won their 2nd Challenge Cup of their franchise. And Ron Mexico was a key contributor to that. Getting nominated  for the Anton Razov trophy as well.

S8 Ron Mexico was still a top player in the league. Scoring 19 goals, 32 assists for 51 points. Mexico was 6th in the league in points that season. With that, he was nominated for the Ron Mexico for the 6th time in 6 seasons.

S9 was Mexico’s last hurrah in terms of nominations and wins. Now firmly in the inflation era. Expect the numbers to stand out. Ron Mexico proved that he is still the best player in the SHL in its infancy. Scoring 33 goals, 52 assists for 85 points. Mexico led the league in points for the last time. He won the Karpotsov for most points, and then won his final Ron Mexico Award and final Sarmad Khan award that season. 7 seasons in a row of either winning or getting nominated for the Ron Mexico. It's pretty clear on why the trophy is named after him.

S10 & 11 he wasn't no slouch either . S10 saw Mexico score 31 goals, 30 assists for 61 points. Yet he was 20th in the league in scoring then.  Regression comes for everyone… S11 Mexico was 43rd in the league in scoring. With 24 goals, 26 assists for 50 points in those 50 games.
S12, S13, and S14 would be his last seasons in the league. However, they were extremely bad. In S12 Mexico scored 3 goals, 10 assists for 13 points. Playing 20 minutes a night. Not great. S11 saw Mexico score 8 points in 50 games. Playing 14 minutes a night. S14 saw Mexico put up 0 points in those 50 games. But only playing 1.5 minutes a night. So barely even playing that season.

The great Ron Mexico would retire then. If we take those 3 seasons out, Mexico played in 511 games played and had 527 points over that span. In his total career however, he had 661 games played, with 223 goals, 325 assists for 548 points over his career. An amazing career, one of the best ever. When Ron Mexico stopped truly playing in S11, before those final 3 seasons. He led the league in points with 527 points. With Riley Raycroft with 506 behind him. Then Pavol Skvoznak far below with 430 points in 3rd. When Mexico truly retired in S14, Raycroft was ahead of him, with 571 points in 655 games played. And Mexico with his 548 points in 551 games played.

When he retired, he was 3rd in goals with 223, and 2nd in points with 548. Mexico was the first player to reach 500 career points. He was the first player to reach 200 goals. He was the first player to win Multiple league MVP awards. He was the first and only player to win 3 and 4 Ron Mexico’s. He is the only player to lead the league in points 4 times. That's what makes him one of the best players ever. He had done things that no one else has ever done to this day.

Now why isnt he #1?
Frankly, because he played in such a different league than the modern days. Even modern STHS and modern FHM. He came into the league at 6 teams. Won his first  Mexico where there were only 8 teams in the league. Won the other 3 when there were only 10 teams in the league. That's not a knock on him, he can only play in the era he created. But voters felt that the #1 and #2 players, played in more competitive leagues, and did their accomplishments, against greater odds. Nothing to take away from Ron Mexico’s achievements at all. We had 2 votes that placed him at #1. The awards alone showed why he is one of the best players ever. And deservingly ranked at #3 of all time.

As we get into the top 10, we are also going to be sharing where they got ranked on everyone’s ballots. For Mexico himself, he had x3 #4 votes, x3 #3 votes, x1 #2 vote, and x2 #1 vote.

What was the name of the awards before we used his name? Like in the first season the league used the real names for awards?
