The excitement of another SHL season is here, but before we get to the games that count, we have the Preseason to enjoy. The preseason is a great opportunity to see how new pieces fit in, how much skaters have progressed in the offseason, and what the chances are for a deep run come playoff time.
Winnipeg had just about the best preseason you could ask for. In it's first game against Montreal, Winnipeg exorcised some demons left from its playoff exit last season to the tune of 8 goals. Team mainstay Mikko Rashford led the charge with a hat trick and an assist to cap off a 4 point night. In game 2, Winnipeg and Calgary were tied going into extra time, where Langston Hardison-Laurent played the hero and snagged a game winning goal. After a rocky start in Game 3 against Tampa Bay, Winnipeg fell short of mounting a comeback from a 0-4 start. But Winnipeg would get back to its winning ways the next night against Edmonton, where Rhett "Shaggy" Carpet notched a 34 save shutout. Both Mikko and Shaggy showed the SHL that they are formidable enough to take on any comers against Hamilton. Mikko had a goal and an assist and Shaggy made an impressive 40 saves to seal a 2-1 victory over the Steelhawks. Perhaps the greatest yardstick of the preseason was a late bout with Buffalo. Winnipeg kept up with their quick and talented skaters, with Melvin Majestik-Moose leading the way on 2 goals. The Aurora would push it all the way to a shootout and put one past Fantobeans to secure the win. Finally, in the final game of the preseason Winnipeg would ride a 3-goal second period to a 4-2 win against Toronto. Shaggy again impressed with 39 saves, showing that he can bail his team out no matter whats thrown at him. And now for our 3 Stars of the Winnipeg preseason: 3rd star goes to James Ward-Prowse! James' two way play in this preseason was the heart and soul of this team. The tenacity to chase after pucks in deep, crash the net, lay the body, and block shots are the little things this team needs to be successful this season. 2nd Star goes to Mikko Rashford! Mikko was the team leader in points, including 3 Powerplay goals. The offense of this team will go as Mikko goes. 1st Star goes to Rhett "Shaggy" Carpet! This team would not have gone 6-1-0 without his exceptional play in goal. Shaggy's .920 save percentage put him in the top half of goalies this preseason. Winnipegs true test begins today with the regular season. Will this momentum propel them to a great start? This reporter sure hopes so! (456 words) |
