Deep Dive #2: SHL's Largest Rises and Falls
#1

Season 77 has concluded and the playoffs are right around the corner, let's take a look who improved the most over season 76 and who slid the furthest.

Largest Rises

Inferno Atlanta Inferno
(S76:64, S77:90, Change: +26)
In season 76 Atlanta finished 8th in the Eastern Conference with 64 points, edging out Toronto on tiebreakers to nab a spot in the playoffs but lost 4-2 in the first round to Baltimore. Led by the combo of Billy Herrington (102 points) and Jiggle E Puff (91 points) Atlanta rocketed from 14th in the league to 4th in season 77, sporting a goal differential swing of +57 over season 76. Atlanta will face 10th place Tampa Bay in the first round of the playoffs and with Tampa's solid home record and a goal differential similar to Atlanta's they could be in for a fight.

Forge Philadelphia Forge
(S76:84, S77:107, Change:+23)
Consistency is the name of the game for Philadelphia, finishing in the top 7 in the league in each of the last 10 seasons. While 5th in season 76, they bounced back to the top in season 77, finishing 7 points ahead of second place San Francisco and 15 ahead of 3rd place Texas. Led by Cale Salad (124 points), Tony Soprano (108 points), and Graj Virrok (93 points) Philadelphia faces 14th place Hamilton in the first round. Barring a major upset, Philadelphia should handle Hamilton easily on their quest for their first championship since season 69.

Largest Falls

Platoon Baltimore Platoon
(S76:107, S77:77, Change: -30)
After hovering near the top of the league for the past 6 seasons, in season 76 Baltimore made the jump to 1st in the league with 107 points. They went all the way to the finals in the playoffs before losing 4-2 to San Francisco. The playoff run hangover hit hard in season 77 and Baltimore slipped to 10th in the league with 30 fewer points than last season. Despite the fall Baltimore still finished solidly in a playoff spot with a .583 point percentage. Their road record of 15-16-2 and a slip in veteran goaltender Sir Devoir's numbers could be the reason for the slip and Baltimore will hope that they can regain their Season 76 form to make a strong playoff push this season.

Aurora Winnipeg Aurora
(S76: 75, S77:55, Change: -20)
Another consistent team, Winnipeg has finished in the top 10 in the league each of the last 10 seasons, and picked up a championship in season 72. Unfortunately they posted a goal differential swing of -85 from season 76 to 77, mostly due to one of the lowest scoring offences in the league, and only 8 road wins, causing a slide from 8th to 15th. They squeaked into the playoffs on the back of a 72 point season from veteran forward Lias Ekholm-Gunnarsson but with only a .417 point percentage they will be in for a tough matchup against defending champions San Francisco. A playoff run seems unlikely, but if Winnipeg can steal a win on the road and spark their anemic offense they may have a chance.
