Fifty-nine rookie skaters and nine rookie goalies took the ice for Season 78 of the SMJHL. With the season in full swing, let’s take a look at the numbers for rookies in the first half of S78. The numbers discussed in deep dive are frozen at the halfway mark, and do not include games from week 3.
Defense
The Anchorage AdvantageThe three top blueline players in terms of Total Point Shares all belong to the Anchorage Armada. Deven Rappleyea, Abbe Wass, and Javelin Bodine have all jumped out to an amazing start to S78 showing both offensive and defensive promise. Devin Rappleyea LD Rappleyea is tied with teammate Bodine for the most points among defensive players and is in the top five in scoring for all rookies. With 29 points, including 11 points on the power play, Rappleyea brings an OPS of 2.02, which is again one of the highest in the league at the midway point. On the defensive end, Rappleyea holds their own on the 3rd line, but has some room for improvement compared to their more defensive minded teammates. Abbe Wass RD Wass has figured out how to clog the lane, with 69 shot blocks and a team leading 2.33 defensive point shares. The rookie left defender has contributed 222 points and has a team leading +19 at the midway point of the season. Look for Wass’s offensive numbers to grow as their role increases in future seasons. Though Wass has one of the lowest Relative Corsi For Percentage on the team, more experience with offensive abilities could make them a major headache for the rest of the league. Javelin Bodine LD Bodine shares the top spot for points among rookie defenders with tammate Rappleyea with 29 points, including 7 goals and 14 points on the power play. Bodine holds the advantage of playing on the first line, which is revealed a bit when you look at their -0.3% CF% Relative. Bodine has stepped in front of 49 shots, and boasts a takeaway-to-giveaway ratio good enough for third among all rookies. Wingers
Badger Hennessy RW Hennessy leads all rookies with 37 points, a full six points ahead of second place Anthony Louchard. Including second among rookies in goals with 16, and top five in assists with 21, scoring has come natural for this first year player. The Battleborn are having a strong year on offense, averaging over 4 goals per game, and the rookie’s big numbers are a large part of that. You can only expect these numbers to go up with a bigger role, as Hennesy is not a major part of the Battleborn power play in their current lines. As a bonus, Hennessy boasts a solid 57% in the faceoff circle, having taken over 250 puck drops. Grindle Waters-Johnson LW Waters-Johnson is living up to his status as a top-five pick in this year’s entry draft. They have balanced their efforts on offence and defense. Though their stats don’t sit at the top of every category, the consistency has made them one of the highest ranked wingers in terms of Total Point Shares. Waters-Johnson has a more than respectable 26 points, 64 hits, and a positive Relative Corsi For of 3.5% on a team that has struggled in the Corsi stat this year. Where Waters-Johnson does excel is goal scoring, responsible for a rookie-high 17 goals this season, leading Hennessy by one goal at the midway point. Centers
Anthony Louchard C Louchard has played a solid role on the surging Timber, putting up 31 points, including 13 goals by the midway mark. The rookie center is top 5 among rookies in goals, points, shots on goal, and Corsi. Anthony is also one of only three rookies with a shorthanded goal. While the offensive numbers are consistent, Louchard has some growth potential on defense, which may come in the back half of the season. Goalies
Katharina Rosenthal G Rookie goalies are having a bit of a rough go this year. No rookie goalie has a goals against average below 3 or a save percentage over 0.900. Rosenthal is among the rookie leaders in those categories with a GAA of 3.17 and SV% of 0.899. Of all rookies, Rosenthal has the only positive GSAA at 0.05. At the midway point, Rosenthal posted a respectable 14 wins in 25 starts, but on a team fighting for a spot in the top 10, one would assume the Berserkers hope to lean on Rosenthal over their underperforming backup much more in the second half of the season.
