Deep Dive #2 - San Diego Tidal
#1

The other expansion team that was created at the end of S75 was the San Diego Tidal. The team was founded by SDCore and he later was able to name Mysterious_Fish as his Co-GM after selecting him three overall in the expansion draft. Corey has a lot of experience with teams, having been a former SMJHL GM, SHL GM, Commissioner of the league, member of SMJHL Head Office, simmer, and more. The team was set up to a great start with a strong expansion draft, much like the Ottawa Highlanders had. Corey opted to keep most of the players from his expansion draft, but worked to make moves as well, which offered him more picks early on.

In that initial draft of S76, the San Diego Tidal were able to take a handful of incredibly great users and players, including Gina Pinard, Skyler Stevens, and Sam Volta. Many of these users have still be engaged in the league to this day, and while they may not have finished their careers with San Diego - Some players being traded in their final seasons to be able to join a competitor, while allowing San Diego to also be able to have some picks for the future, they have left an impact on the locker room as well.

The following season, San Diego were able to pick up Felix Carlsson and Walter Scheibli. While there aren’t quite as many picks as you might think from the draft for San Diego, their assets were being sent forward specifically for the S78 season. At two overall, San Diego was able to take user Ara, Roisin Armagh, who was able to join the SMJHL as an intern that season and definitely making great growth in keeping the locker room active for this newly developing franchise. Later, San Diego spent a few assets to be able to trade up to draft me, at 6overall. While it might seem strange that I went later in the draft, especially as the commissioner, many who were in the know understood that I wanted to be both drafted after a true rookie, as well as having my draft be an absolute surprise. San Diego was able to pull off both of my requests. Additionally, San Diego was able to draft TBFAW and Bernard Kochese, as well as picking up a player on waivers near the end of the season.

Despite San Diego’s record during this season, and being last in the standings, they were very much able to gain a large amount of picks to set up the future of the team. With such a solid draft in S78, and gaining assets from trading players from their early time in the league. This means that San Diego should be set up appropriately to have an incredibly strong showing in the league in the next two or three seasons. Allowing this group of 5 players from the S78 draft to age up and hit the 425 TPE threshold, as well as allowing the younger generation and assets that have been gained to grow too, San Diego has quite a bright future ahead of them.
