S81 DFA Bounties #1 - The Past GRADED
#1

Hello new players!

From the Trade Deadline to the posting of the first task completable for TPE, whether that be the Interested Prospects Threads, Early Bird PT, Mock Draft, etc., DFAs will be able to complete weekly DFA Bounties. These Bounties will function practically identically to PTs, but for money instead of TPE, and will be posted in this part of the forums. By writing 250 words or completing a graphic for a certain prompt, DFAs will earn $500,000 for their bank accounts, with a cap of 4 completed bounties ($2,000,000). You do not need to claim bounties anywhere, instead the money will be added to your bank account when the task is graded.

Written Option: Only the best of the best make it into the SMJHL. Junior players from all over the world come to this league in the hopes of being drafted, becoming a successful SMJHL player and continuing that success in the SHL. But we all have a history too. What is your history? Where did you play? How did you do? How did your career look so far, and what aspects of your player in their pre-SMJHL career is going to make your player succeed? (250 words min.)

Graphic Option: Pictures say more than a thousand words. Show us a pic of the young you, playing hockey. Include your player name and a render of your younger self, and at least one statline.

Reward: $500,000, for doing one of the options.

Only current SMJHL Draftable Free Agents (S82 SMJHL Draftees / S83 players) are eligible for this bounty.

Deadline: Sunday, March 16th at 11:59pm PST.

Five Hole Goes West was born just outside of Pittsburgh. He spent his formative years learning to skate at the Delmont ice rink. While he was there he saw a youth hockey game between the Latrobe Wildcats and the Armstrong Arrows. He was immediately obsessed with the way the players moved on the ice and one player in particular stood out as he was able to snipe 3 goals from all areas of the ice. Five Hole knew that he was destined to play hockey from then on out.

As he grew up he played on a few youth hockey teams in the Pittsburgh area, he was not nearly as big as some of the other kids and spent the first few seasons as a depth option only seeing sparse playing time. But he knew his time would come. At 16 Five Hole finally hit a growth spurt and all of a sudden all of his skills matched his frame better and before long opponents began to fear when he was on the ice. He netted 4 hat tricks his 16 year old season and also finished in the top 10 for assists in the league. He was known to be resilient never giving up on a play, and he always wanted to do his best for his team regardless of the personal stats.

Now as the draft approaches Five Hole and the rest of the West's all anxiously await Five Holes next stop on his journey to the top of the SHL.

It’s tough to grow as a hockey player in Florida. Sure, the Panthers and Lightning are on top of the NHL, but youth hockey resources are few and far between. This makes it difficult to get off to an early start in your hockey career. Kids from Canada, New England, the Northern US and even the midwest have access to better facilities, more exposure in tournaments and the like. For Travis Coates, he had to carve his own path. It is difficult enough to start out as a goaltender, and couple that with being from Tallahassee, Florida, he needed to work hard.

Before we talk about what he had to do to get noticed and eventually signed, we can mention how Coates fostered a love for this game on ice being from a warm place. His father is Canadian, and during a visit to relatives north of the border, they attended a hockey game and saw free skate when he was just three years old. Travis was captivated right from the very beginning, and thus began his love for everything puck. As he began elementary school, he begged his parents to be taken to a rink and taught the game of hockey. From there, he decided to put away the slapshots and slick dekes and instead settle for the game that occurs within the crease, choosing to be a netminder instead.

From there, Coates quickly became a household name in the youth circuit in Florida, and rumors of his prowess spread far and wide. A recent high school graduate, it didn’t take long from the day of his declaration to get signed by an SMJHL team, beginning his chapter of junior to one day professional hockey. It won’t take long for Coates’ name to be called in the upcoming SHL draft if he continues at this pace!

Down in the Seattle Underground, Jumbose Chitters grew up watching his favorite small time local team the Stormfiends nightly. His favorite pair of defensemen, the duo nicknamed the Scartorn, being the highlights of his late night Cabal Vision viewings as he eagerly watched them speedily skate around and launch anyone attempting to skate past their blue line onto the ice. They hit often, hit hard, and rarely legal, much to the team's owners dismay as he found himself having to bride the referees more games than not. But their great success infatuated Chitters and he vowed to one day become a player for the Stormfiends! Sadly due to numerous scandals, bad business acquisitions, and rampant rebrandings, the team once known as the Stormfiends was long forgotten in the quick nature of the underground.

By the time Chitters hit the ice, the closest thread to the Stormfiends was the Underworld Rodents. He hit the ground running and practiced hard, but couldn't emulate his idols the way he envisioned. He adapted to his own talents for his speed and agility to try and become the best defensemen he could be. As the Seattle Underground League is filled all sorts of different bands of animals, his speedy nature was the one constant that kept other players on their toes and worried about the puck being snatched out from under them. Chitters has a long way to go to keep growing before he finally hits the SMJHL but he is not going to stop his training everyday until he can escape from the Underground and finally take the next step to becoming a pro of his own.

I AM MELON LORD, BANE OF THE AVATAR AND EMPEROR OF THE FIRE NATION!

Well, sorta. My name is really Toph Beifong. I'm from the Earth Kingdom town of Gaoling. My family is well off, but they always wanted to treat me like some fragile little girl, like a piece of fine china. So I took off with the Avatar to experience some adventure. And boy, was it! We traveled the world, fought all sorts of bad guys, and even toppled the Fire Nation! It was amazing! Everything I had ever hoped for!

But, well...how do you go back to a normal life after all that? I hated my life in Gaoling before I went traveling. That wasn't going to get better after experiencing so much of the world. So instead I traveled further, beyond all known seas, looking for some new adventure. Which brought me to the shores of a place called "North America". I guess my more rough and tumble nature made people think I would like this weird game they call "hockey". Let me tell you, I most certainly did not at first. You see, the other thing about me is I'm blind. The only way I can "see" is by sensing vibrations in the ground. I can't do that very well on ice. But then they put these things on my feet called "skates". Obviously I wasn't thrilled at first - let's put shoes on the feet of the blind girl who sees by sensing vibrations in the ground; brilliant - but then I realized these skates were made of metal. Very sharp metal, as it so happens. Sharp enough to tune into the vibrations in the ice.

So I gave it a shot. Turns out being able to control your skates with absolute precision is a massive advantage in this game. So is being able to bulk up by using rock armor instead of whatever soft padding everyone else uses. Wusses. It didn't take long for me to start making a name for myself and advancing through the ranks. And, well...here I am.

Perry Fields was born in a small town in the countryside of England. He never really latched onto soccer, rugby, or any of the other sports that his friends played while he was growing up. At the age of 9, he attended his first EIHL game. He was hooked. The young lad begged his parents to but him a pair of skates, which is how he quickly learned to skate. He picked up a stick not long after and the rest is history. The homebody that he is, Perry always stayed close to home while playing hockey. The opportunity arose for him to move overseas to play major junior hockey, but he turned it down in order to stay close to his family. He played locally in Stafford, which is about a half hour drive from home. Due to his rural location, it was difficult for anyone to get eyes on the young phenom, but scouts from the three major junior leagues in North America got their eyes on some film and were intrigued. The Kamloops Blazers were the team that made the most sense to Perry, but ultimately, he decided to go the SMJHL route. He felt that this choice would aid his development more properly and provided a direct route to his ultimate goal as a hockey player: the Simulation Hockey League. Perry's long road to North America is about to pay dividends. He has the opportunity to join the IHF Great Britain team, get drafted by an SMJHL team, and eventually make his SHL debut. It's been a journey, but the young boy from the English countryside is ready to start his North American career.

Jordin FourFour III comes from a long lineage of former SHL and SMJHL players. His grandfather, Jordin FourFour was a Hall of Fame player in the SHL for the Texas Renegades almost 60 seasons ago, and his father Jordin FourFour Jr. was a stellar goaltender for the Buffalo Stampede soon after. Now while both of his predecessors were goaltenders, Jordin FourFour III comes in as a hard hitting centreman, it's essentially if you took Brady Tkachuk and put him at centre ice that's how he plays his game.

Jordin played in the USHL for the Chicago Steel prior to declaring for the SMJHL draft, amassing 100 points and 350 hits in his final season with the Steel. While he does not yet have the winning pedigree that his father and grandfather had, Jordin is looking to move into the SMJHL / SHL system to win the ultimate prize. He's played well at all levels of hockey throughout his career and needs a new challenge in the SMJHL to really show he is among the best players in the world.

His hard hitting, physical mentality is going to be key for his career success in this league, but the main aspect of Jordin's game that is going to stun GMs and the opposition is his ability to put the puck wherever in the net he wants, almost at will. He will incite fear in his opponents eyes with his physical game, but also in goaltenders as they get headaches from flashing lights going off the entire game.

Helmfried Kunkel was born in Darmstadt, Germany where hockey is a growing sport but nowhere near the main sport that people usually focus on. Growing up, all his friends and family were huge soccer/football fans given that Darmstadt had their own local storied soccer team and the Bundesliga being one of the top soccer leagues in the world. Like his peers, he tried soccer starting from a young age as that was the norm there in order to eventually join a professional academy in hopes of making it to pro leagues. However, he quickly found that he wasn't very good with his feet and kicking a ball around. After a couple of years, it was clear to his parents and him that he wasn't made to go very far as a soccer player. He continued to play in hopes of turning it around, but as his friends and peers started to join academies, his hope began to dwindle. In middle school, one of his best friends had just returned from a vacation in the USA and was telling Helmfried about this wonderful experience he had watching the New York Islanders live. He described an electric atmosphere when goals were scored similar to soccer, hard hits that knocked players to the ground, and the impressive stickwork all the players had. Helmfried was familiar with hockey, they had their own Olympic teams and even had their own German NHL stars but he never really put much thought into it until now.

Fast forward a few years, Helmfried had fallen in love with skating and being on the ice. He found he was much better with a stick in his hand than kicking a ball with his feet. While it was hard to initially find a rink and a team in Germany, eventually he found a team and made life-long friends with his teammates. Not only did his love for hockey blossom, but he quickly realized that he was pretty talented. After a few years, he had been urged to try out for the SHL in hopes of becoming a pro. While initially nervous, Helmfried decided to trust his gut and take the leap. Now he's looking forward to joining the SMJHL and prove to himself that he has what it takes.
