Since hockey is not a massive sport in Ireland, it was hard for Carter to practice especially with the hotter weather. Growing up, he got full support from his family and it was always a dream of his to make it pro. O’Callahan trained for many years outside of Ireland to get a true grip on the game, and later found himself entered into the SWJHL as a minor hockey league player. With no experience in hockey he thought it would likely be a lot harder than it was, but with a truly exceptional work ethic, we now see a truly flourished and outstanding player. Since joining the league, O’Callahan has made quite the name for himself as an exceptional person both on and off the ice, and surely has many foundations and participations in research and funding to help those that need it most. ==================================== SCOUTING REPORT ==================================== At six foot seven, Carter O’Callahan is likely one of the largest athletes in the system, and he’s had one hell of a ride through the league with more ups than downs. O’Callahan officially signed up for the SWJHL season thirteen draft and made a name for himself before even being drafted. Once it was all said and done, O’Callahan was taken seventh overall by the Kelowna Knights and he became their anchor and cornerstone for that full season. It wasn’t until late in that season that O’Callahan was moved to the Impact to well…help make an impact as the team was struggling. The only time he’d ever make it into the playoffs while playing junior hockey would be with the Impact, and the Knights never made it with him on the roster. During his stint down in juniors, he racked up a lot of points, really showing people how to get things done, below are ALL of his stats from ALL of the previous seasons: Season Thirteen: 39GP | 3G | 7A | 10P | 50 PIM | 138 HITS While it doesn’t look like a lot, O’Callahan was able to contribute what was needed for the Impact to make the playoffs, and while he never spent an entire season on the teams that he played for, he certainly did all that he could for the team. Once his junior season was complete, and he had won the cup with the Impact, he was taken highly touted in the SHL draft, going third overall to the Wolfpack. After such an impressive showing, there was no doubt that this kind of talent was going to be used immediately, and so he was. His first season as a rookie really didn’t go the way he wanted it to, but his two previous seasons before now were exceptional and some of the best he may ever see as a forward. Below are all three seasons’ statistics: Season Fourteen: 50GP | 8G | 14A | 22P | 24 PIM | 104 HITS Season Fifteen: 50GP | 25G | 28A | 53P | 28 PIM | 114 HITS Season Sixteen: 50GP | 18G | 33A | 51P | 26 PIM | 124 HITS Looking at these statistics, it’s obvious that after he adjusted as a rookie, he never looked back. Two fifty+ point seasons is something that doesn’t just happen all the time, the consistency and just sheer determination to win for his team shows that success is in his blood. While some people think it’s a shame that the promising forward has now moved to the defender position, we still believe that Carter is going to be a fifty point player per season, if not more. Some may say it’s crazy, as defenders are more defensive, but he’ll be the kind of guy that plays like a forward on a different position, nothing should change. So what makes O’Callahan so good? Well we got the scoop. Carter O’Callahan has an exceptional shot. He’s accurate when shooting and knows how to make the puck land in the back of the net like its practice. On top of having an accurate shot, he also has one wicked hard shot, put those two together and you have one deadly sniper. Another big thing about O’Callahan is his ability to stickhandle. Some players find it difficult to maneuver the puck, they don’t know how to control it properly and so it throws off their game, but for O’Callahan it’s not a big deal. He’s a great overall successor and this is why his game and development will be great. Finally, a big thing that plays to his advantage is his work ethic. Carter is extremely motivated to work out kinks in his game and doesn’t let it bother him, it just makes him more determined to figure out the problems and fix them without complaining and without hassle. Like every good hockey player, Carter does have some things he could fix, and while it comes to a surprise, I’m sure even he could admit it. The first major thing we see in his game is his durability and possibly endurance which both fit right into one another. Without these key statistics, O’Callahan would be useless on multiple lines and his chance at injury could be increased simply because his durability is lacking. If he continues to work out those kinks and train to be able to stay on the ice for longer shifts, playing him multiple areas will be easy. The final thing we looked at for O’Callahan is his penalty shot ability. While it’s not a huge deal at his defender position, as a forward any good player should be able to help their team in the shootout, and it looks as though he just wasn’t able to come through.
