Is Wingels a bust or the real deal?

There was a lot of hype for Bradley Wingels entering his rookie season in the SHL. The SMJHL rookie scoring leader quickly earned a roster spot through training camp in season 16 and looked to make an impact. However, the challenge proved greater than expected. After a disappointing season that saw the sniper only score 6 goals and 9 assists, Wingels is primed to improve.

"Even though we all want to be in the playoffs I think I benefited from a long off season. I was able to go home and just skate for a few months. Work on lower body. That was the biggest challenge in my first season. Everyone is so much faster. I knew I needed to improve my skating to survive in this league. If you can skate, you can play. The goals will follow. So really just spent every day skating at the old college rink and shoot pucks. I'd probably shoot somewhere around 500 pucks a day. Just a good way to get back to the basics.

Another big change is the defensive play in the SHL. If you want to earn minutes coach has to trust you defensively. Worked a lot on positioning and stick work. I'm hoping to become better all around. But what I really missed was scoring those big game goals. Take care of the defense, and then that will help you offensively".

The SHL has seen many young talented players crash and burn due to the fact that you cannot rely on talent alone. It takes hard work to make it in this league. And it looks like Wingels is trying to stick around. Time will tell and this is a big season for the sophomore in determining whether hes a bust, or for real.

“The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. ... There are neither beginnings nor endings to the Wheel of Time. But it was a beginning.”
