TORONTO, ONTARIO,, CANADA -- After finally playing his first game in the SHL, Andrey Barbashev has taken to the press to discuss his first official regular season game in the bigs. The North Stars picked up a 3-2 victory in a very fun, yet intense shootout over the Hamilton Steelhawks. Although the Russian playmaker did not produce any points in the win, he still got his first game out of the way and there is still lots of season left. The floor is now open. What's it feel like to finally get some shl game action? It feels great to get the first game out of the way. I was hoping I could light the lamp just once especially in the first game on home ice. But i'll get that monkey off my back eventually. It's crazy to think after 3 long seasons in the SMJHL that I am finally here. Personal expectations? I want to be Rookie of the Year in the SHL. My goal is to have a 30+ point season and lead all rookies. I'd also like to be a plus player and show the North Stars that even as a rookie, I still have a strong two-way game and that I am defence first. Meaning I am the first one back in our zone and the last one trailing into the offensive zone. Team expectations? We need to get back into Playoffs and with New England rebuilding and West Kendall still struggling, we have a very good chance to lock up the 4th seed in the Eastern conference. I'd like us to try and aim for that 3rd seed though and surpass Hamilton. I think everyone knows Minny and Manhattan will be 1 and 2, but as a team we are aiming to be 3rd, but we'd be just as happy to bring playoff hockey back to the city of Toronto. Worst things to say when asked : How does it feel to score the first goal in your SHL career? "If I don't score again all season, that goal is worth 3 million dollars of my paycheque" How do you like the city of Toronto so far? I love the city so far and the fans that this historic team has. We have lots of diehard fans who have stuck through the hard times and have supported the North Stars since the beginning. Sometimes I wish I could hide from the media, but it's Toronto and i'll never get away from that because our team will always be under the microscope. How was your training camp experience and what factors do you think led to you making the team this time around? I think this time around I was more relaxed and confident. This time it wasn't my first rodeo and I wasn't as nervous as I was at last season's training camp. I worked really hard in the juniors to focus on my defensive side of the game. In the SHL you need to be able to play a 200 foot game or else you'll never be successful here. I focused really hard on just working on my defensive play, and my defensive game translated to offence when I was in the juniors with Vancouver last season. I am more reliable in my own end, and I think that is why I made the North Stars roster this time because JNH and Leafs felt I was ready. Who do you think is the most underrated player on Torontos roster? Honestly, Kristian Eriksson. The guy doesn't get a lot of credit for what he does and he is a big part of our team. People were surprised when we named him captain, but he certainly earned that role and the right to wear that C on his chest. Eriksson doesn't just lead on the ice but he leads off the ice. He sacrifices his body night in and night out, and isn't afraid to take the body or lay down to block a shot. He is a true leader, and will be for many seasons.
