Game 151: Vancouver Whalers @ St. Louis Scarecrows
This was a matchup between the Whalers and Scarecrows. The Scarecrows needed a win here as they battled Detroit for the top seed in the East while the Whalers looked to continue to gain momentum and prepare for the playoffs, where they'll look to upset the Knights and Firebirds. For Vancouver, primary goaltender Erik Lundqvist gets the nod while the Scarecrows gave Kozar a rest, letting Nikita Nevzorov get a shot in net. The first period started off quickly as Mitchell Dambach found the back of the net just three minutes in to put St. Louis ahead. Not a team to waste much time, Naeem Chamas put his team up by two less than halfway through the period. But the Whalers put on an admirable effort as rookie forward Geoffrey Allen managed to score Vancouver's first and end the second period down by just one. In the second period, Vancouver came out looking to even things up and Patrikov Bure did just that. But it would not take long for the Scarecrows to return the favor as Winston Windsor helped St. Louis regain the lead. Then, nine minutes into the period, Geoffrey Allen of the Whalers took a double minor for roughing, giving the Scarecrows four minutes to extend their lead. Incredibly, Vancouver did not just kill the penalty but VLAD McZehrl picked up a shorthanded tally to tie the game at three. But before the period ended, Anton Federov helped the Scarecrows take a 4-3 lead into the third. The Whalers looked like an improved team in the third, desperate to tie this one up. But while they dominated play, Nevzorov stood on his head to maintain his team's lead. But past the halfway point, Beau Ballard picked up his tenth of the season to tie the game at 4. Neither team would let up defensively for the final minutes as we entered overtime. Overtime did not prove to be any more offensive as the five minute frame ended with the score still at 4-4, leaving the game to be decided by a shootout. Penalty Shot by VLAD McZehrl for Vancouver Whalers - Goal! Penalty Shot by Nick Leier for St. Louis Scarecrows - Goal! Penalty Shot by Beau Ballard for Vancouver Whalers - Shot Misses the Net Penalty Shot by Damien Wert for St. Louis Scarecrows - Stopped by Erik Lundqvist Penalty Shot by Stefan Nussbaumer for Vancouver Whalers - Stopped by Nikita Nevzorov Penalty Shot by Anton Federov for St. Louis Scarecrows - Goal! After McZehrl and Leier both scored on their first attempts, Ballard and Wert missed theirs. With a change to put all the pressure on St. Louis, Stefan Nussbaumer took the puck in on Nevzorov and unleashed a strong shot but it was stopped, leaving Anton Federov to potentially win this one for St. Louis. He brought the puck near Lundqvist, faked a forehand shot and put the puck past the goaltender on his backhand to give the Scarecrows the shootout victory! ![]() Registered S39 Challenge Cup Champion
Game 152: Prince George Firebirds @ Montreal Impact
The first period began in this one as a tight defensive battle with most teams reluctant to five either side much chance to do anything offensively. The Impact got a change on the powerplay midway through the period when Shea Robinson was called for interference but they couldn't muster up any good chances due to a solid Prince George PK. But a few minutes later, Buster Killington received a beautiful pass from Chris Welch and put the puck home to give the Impact a 1-0 lead, one that would hold up through the end of the period. The second period started out with a bang. Jesster won the opening faceoff as the puck was retrieved by Killington. Killington took the puck into the Firebirds zone, passed the puck back to Jack Burton, who ripped one from the point right past Kyle Prince to take a 2-0 lead. The rest of the period continued to be a tight defensive battle as the early goal would be the only score of the period. In the third, the Montral Impact started out with a bang, controlling possession and putting quality chances on Prince. Eventually, their pressure became too much as Patrick Brumm, in desperation, was called for hooking. The Impact promptly converted on the powerplay opportunity as Vladimir Lidstrom scored his tenth goal of the season. Montreal would hold onto the 3-0 lead the rest of the way to win the game as Earnest Ciarelli picked up the 13 save shutout. |
