Jack Durden Round 1 Presser
#1

Jack Durden steps up to the microphone after the Whalers have won their series 4-2.

Durden: I'll take any questions you have now.

Interview
You guys are proving a lot of people wrong, how does it feel, what message would you like to send to the rest of the SHL?

Durden: It feels amazing. We all knew that after our shaky start, it wasn’t going to be the prettiest season. And then we traded D’Amour, and our defense isn’t the greatest past our top 2. Then we had a few players we knew could be good, leave on us. We knew it was an uphill battle, but it was a challenge we were looking to take on. I think the whole team wants to send the message that we’re not just about to give up, even when it looks dismal. We’re here for the long-haul, and we all want to kick ass. We’ve got great leadership, and we all have a team-first mentality. JHS has kept us going and Originz has been a magic man with the lines. It’s the right time to start clicking and winning.

Interview
What do you think of the St. Louis Scarecrows and their short S24 playoff stint....?

Durden: I’m honestly really surprised. They only lost their conference by one point, and had a good leg up on Montreal this year. When you’ve got players like Windd and Wert, I can’t believe you don’t succeed. I think in the end it came down to a shoddy defense core, and missed opportunities. That and Ciarelli was a brick wall.

Interview
Why the sudden success?

Durden: Like I said, we’ve really gelled as a team. We’ve found some great line combinations that are really clicking, and we can’t praise Originz enough for making it work. We had a terrible time on any special teams in the beginning of the year, but we all improve defensively, and started figuring out how to bury pucks.

Interview
Second round predictions?

Durden: For us, I think it’s going to be super close with the Knights They’ve got a ton of players that are in their second and third seasons, and we’ve got a lot of rookies. I’m not using it as an excuse, but we know it’s going to be experience versus passion in round 2. I think we can pull off another upset, and I know that we’re going to keep it close. We know we’ll figure out Ogorodnikov and find a way to put some pucks behind him after we pepper him with shots.
In the East, it’s going to be the Falcons, no doubt. I’m not concerned with this match-up at all, because it’s a done deal. Impact has some great players, but Detroit is just rolling too strong right now to be hurt in this match-up.

Interview
What was the greatest reason you guys were able to beat Prince George?

Durden: Everyone was clutch when they needed to be. Lundqvist is a hell of a goalie and stood on his head through our whole series. He made the saves when we needed him to and kept us in the games. Our vets like Bure and McZehrl stepped up and scored some goals, and we even got rookie production out of our top 3 rookies in myself, Hoover and Allen. We’ve just found a way to win games and pucks just keep bouncing the right way.

Interview
Thoughts on how this will affect the attitude in the locker room going into next season?

Durden: It’s phenomenal. To be honest, we rookies are a bit worried (albeit excited) about being drafted to an expansion team, because we want another year to stay together and win together. Don’t get me wrong, we’re excited at the prospect of being a cornerstone of an upcoming franchise, but we’re realistic and know we need development time too. We all know that we’re going to lose some good players to the SHL, and it’s to be expected. But we’re confident with our rookies now, and we know we’re going to draft well this upcoming season and make another deep playoff run. We’re stoked for how amazing this team is in the face of adversity.

Interview
Do you feel good about what you did? Did it make you feel like a big strong man?

Durden: Yes. Yes I do.

Interview
But as a more serious question, you had some games where you absolutely dominated the face-off dot. Is that something you've been working on all season, or was it just the luck of the game swinging in your favor?

Durden: I’ve been working on it a lot. I know that in order to score goals, we need to have the puck. We lost a lot of face-offs in the beginning of the year, and I figured that as a center, this is my main job. I’m a playmaker at heart, and I know I need to have the puck so that I can get those assists. I may not have as many points as my fellow rookies, but I know that I’ve been responsible for a lot of goals, even if I don’t get a tally on the scoreboard. And really, that’s all that matters to me is that we win.

Interview
What is one area of your game you feel you have to work on before taking "the next step"?

Durden: I really need to work on becoming better defensively. I’ve worked at bulking up and taking hits (I took the fourth most in the league this year) and I’m working at my strength off the puck. I was a sieve in the defensive end this year, and I know it’s something I need to change fast if I’m going to make an impact in the SHL, or even the SMJHL next year.

Interview
Give me a number and explanation. Among SMJHL Rookie Centers (Jesster, Vilhjalmsson, Scholz, Zavstrom Johnson, Fleming, Kudleychuk, Nyquist, Stanley, probably forgot a few more) where do you think you stand?

Durden: Oooh, this is a tough one. In all honesty, I’d rank myself 2nd or 3rd when it comes to the rookie centers. Like I said before, I didn’t put up a ton of points this year, but I finished 10th for all centers, and 6th for rookies. However, I was 4th in face-off percentage, and I know that face-offs lead to goals, points or not. I know people like Jesster are going to dominate me in points, but when we face-off in the circle, I know his ass is mine.

Interview
Is there a connection between both first round upsets?

Durden: I think there is, just in the determination of these two clubs. We’ve been a joke ever since dominating pre-season and then coming out of the gate pretty slowly, and I think we came out to prove that you can joke all you want, but we’re Whalers til we die, and we’re going to make you regret not asking for a trade to our team, and you’re going to be pissed you didn’t get drafted by us. We all bleed blue and green, and we wanted to show everyone that we’re not a joke. I think the :impact: wanted to prove that too. They were the bottom feeders in the East, and no one gave them a chance. Now, they’re showing that they can hang with the big boys and kick some ass too. It’d be amazing to face them in the finals, and like I said, I don’t see it, but it’d be an awesome thing.

Interview
How confident are you and your teammates heading into the next round?

Durden: We’re super confident. We know we can win, and we know that our management has done everything they can with who we have in order to make this a dominating team. We’re not going to give up, and we’re not going to quit. We Whalers rock you.

Interview
If you get by the Knights, who do you want coming out of the East?

Durden: I’m torn with this one. On one hand, I’d love to play the Falcons and have a re-match of last years finals, and this time come out on top. But I’d love to see the :impact: come out on top so we can have a battle of the bottom seeds. Either way, it’s a dream match-up. But right now, our focus is entirely on the Knights and getting to the finals.

Interview
Do you think that playing with veteran Patrikov Bure and rookie Geoffrey Allen has improved your game?

Durden: I really do think it’s made me a better player. We’ve all got our skillsets, and we’re a great combination. Bure and Allen put up a lot of goals, Allen can pass, and I can pass and win face-offs so we get possession. It’s not one player that makes a team, but the three of us together make a pretty dynamic and well-rounded offense. I’m honored to be on a line with them.

Interview
Do you think the 2nd line of the Vancouver Whalers should be the 1st line?

Durden: Haha. In our hearts, we’re the first line. I don’t mind playing 2nd line because we get just about as many minutes on the ice, and often play against the 2nd or 3rd line parings. I’ll take an easier opponent any day. Makes us look even better!

Interview
Time to beat the Knights, what's your game plan for the series

Durden: I don’t think we change the game plan too much. We still need to win in the circle, put up a ton of shots and rely on Lundy to bail us out every night. I think we need to watch out for their stars, and just hope that we can help Lundy steal some games and make it easier on him by scoring a lot. We’ve done well at putting points up, and we just have to continue that trend.

Interview
How do you feel the success by the Whalers in the playoffs will impact your draft stock, as well as the rest of your teams draft stock?

Durden: I think we’re showing a lot of SHL GMs that we’re not flukes. We’re here to play, and we’re here to play well. We’ve all had a mentality of knowing what we want to accomplish, but when our GMs tell us to work on something, we do it. We’re coachable, we’re fun, and we’re damn good. I think teams that are looking for a face-off dominating playmaker are going to come calling for me. I think that if you want points, you’re going to see Hoover and Allen go early. It really depends on team needs and current compositions. We’re all going to be major assets to any team, and teams would be stupid to pass over us. We ARE the future.

Interview
Do you think the playoffs are the true definition of a player's ability?

Durden: I do. I can play 52 games a season and show you that I’m a good player. But in the playoffs, we see who’s great, and who comes up clutch for the team. The season is just a minor part of the year. The playoffs is where it really matters and you need to click. Luckily, we Whalers are clicking now, and will continue to click when we keep on winning.

Interview
Where do you see yourself going in the draft?

Durden: I’d be lying if I said I didn’t WANT to go first overall. It’s every kid’s dream to be selected first. But I’m realistic, and I figure I’ll go in the second round, maybe early third. I’m hoping teams see my potential and what I’ve done off the puck, and what I bring to an organization. To be honest, I don’t care where I go eventually, but I’d love to be drafted alongside my current teammates. I know it’s not possible for us all to stay on one team, but I’d love to end up playing with Hoover, Allen, Lundqvist or Bure. They’re class guys, they make the Locker Room fun, and it makes us stronger on the ice.

Interview
What is your view on the SHL expansion teams, and do you foresee yourself playing for one of them?

Durden: I think it’s a great opportunity for newer GMs to shine, and I’d be lying if I said that the Buffalo Stampede aren’t cool as hell. As I’ve said before, it’d be an honor to be a part of an expansion team, and hopefully be a cornerstone for the future, but I know I need development time, and it’d be hard to get that in the SHL. At the end of the day, if an expansion team saw me as a building block, and took that shot to get me, I’ve giving them my all. I’ll do whatever my team asks of me, and I’ll do it with pride.

Interview
Do you like playing in the SMJHL? Even though all it is, is constant macaroni art and finger paintings. Oretty much a day care the SMJHL is am I right?

Durden: I do like it! It’s a lot of fun, and I’ve made a lot of friends in the locker room. I have a ton of Hoover and Allen’s macaroni art hanging on my fridge.

It's going on the fridge![/quote]
Daycare is an understatement though. I’ve gotta monitor Bure all the time because he loves to get into trouble with the ladies, VLAD McZ is always talking about needles and we need to watch him closely, and Allen gets naked a lot and rubs his junk on people’s gear… it’s a dirty ass job.

Interview
You've come a long way from your humble roots as a third line center to a second line center shouldering PP and PK duties. How do you think this bodes for you in the long term?

Durden:
I think it bodes really well. I fought to stay off the fourth line when we had a lot of actives, because I knew I was going to help, and I knew I was going to be better in certain aspects on the ice. Unfortunately with the inactives we had, I needed to step up, and it feels great knowing the Originz and JHS have a belief in me that I can contribute to the team on the PP and PK. It boosts my confidence, and I have more drive to show them that they made the right decision.

Interview
You and your linemates have been red hot, contributing 40 points in the first series of the playoffs. How do you plan on carrying that momentum to the Eastern Conference Finals?

Durden:
We’ve been clicking, and we just need to keep doing what we’ve been doing. It’s hard to state specifics in that regard. Bure needs to continue to light it up, and Allen needs to do both like he has been, and I need to win face-offs and put pucks in the net when I can. I'm a pass-first player, and I just have to hope that my boys will bury it, and I have all the confidence in the world that they will every time I give them the puck.

Interview
Piggybacking on the last question, there's obviously a connection between yourself, Allen, and Bure on the ice. How well do you three gel off the ice? Does that extend to the rest of the locker room as well?

Durden:
Allen and I get along really well. We’re both from the same area, so we have a lot to talk about and hit up bars together when we’re not on the ice. We’ve pulled too many stunts to count and we’re both really surprised we haven’t been in too much trouble for half the shit we do. Bure is a great mentor in the locker room and always keeps spirits high. He’s a great guy and we have a lot of fun in that room.

Interview
With the addition of two new SHL teams, obviously there is a chance you may only play one season in the SMJHL before being called up to the big league. Would you like to spend another season growing in the SMJHL, or would you be content with a Top-6 role against stiffer competition?

Durden:
I’d relish either opportunity. I‘d love to be a top-6 player for anyone that’s willing to take a chance on me, but I know development can be good too. I have a feeling that whoever drafts me will know what’s best for me and for the team, and will guide me in one way or the other. I’m not too worried about my future, because I know I’m going to be great, and the GM who drafts me will know that too.

Interview
A lot of analysts have you projected to be drafted in the second round. How does that affect your mindset going into the draft? Do you feel you can elevate your draft position during this final stretch of the post-season?

Durden:
I’m great with being drafted wherever. I’d love to say I was a second round draft pick. Being drafted later just puts more fire in my belly to kick more ass and show those that skipped over me that they made a bad choice. I’m hoping to keep doing well during the post season just so my team wins. If it elevates my stock, great. What I’m really looking forward to is competing in the finals and winning a championship with this Whalers crest on my jersey.

Interview
The Whalers have three strong draft prospects. Zach Hoover, Geoffrey Allen, and yourself. What has it been like coming into the league together, and how do you feel you three will make an impact in the SHL?

Durden:
I knew since day 1 that I was going to have a friendly rivalry with Hoover. I messaged him about it and we joked about maybe being on the same team, and somehow it happened. He’s a good guy, and always does what he can to get along with people. Allen and I are tight, and it makes the job fun. It’s been great to grow with these boys, and have friendly competitions every game. I think the three of us will do great in the SHL, and we’re going to be the future of the league. We’ve got the passion, and have had some great mentorship to get where we are. The sky’s the limit for us.

Thank you all for your time and questions. I’ve gotta get ready for game one against the Knights Have a good evening, and stay classy.
